New Future for Motorcycle Shows Through the Launch of Power Sport Services

28 02 2012

TORONTO, ONTARIO – February 27, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Bob Ramsay, President of the Motorcycle & Moped Industry Council (MMIC) and the Canadian Off-Highway Vehicle Distributors Council (COHV) announced today the official launch of the newly incorporated for profit company, 8061246 Canada Inc., which will operate under the name of “Power Sport Services (PSS)”.

“Power Sport Services will focus on innovation and leading edge management of the motorcycle, ATV and power sport vehicle shows and the Open Road Powersport Insurance program,” stated Ramsay, who will also take on the role of President of PSS.

“Over the next few months, the company will be working on the strategic integration of its operations,” commented Mr. Ramsay. “With close to 200,000 people attending the MMIC and COHV Motorcycle & ATV shows each year, we are always looking for imaginative ways to provide more value for consumers and exhibitors of the shows. We believe that the launch of the new company is the appropriate next step in building on the future of shows and the expansion of the Open Road Powersport insurance program,” added Ramsay.

MMIC began producing shows in 1985 and since that time there have been many changes in the management of the shows and how they are delivered and operated. The launch of PSS at this critical time in our economy, will give the industry the flexibility it needs to deliver improvements in growth and profitability.

The year 2012-2013 will be an exciting time for the rebounding motorcycle and ATV industries. With the addition of Power Sport Services, this new venture is just one more step toward ensuring success in serving the riding community and industry even better.

Hero MotoCorp partners with Erik Buell

26 02 2012

NEW DELHI – February 24, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – In a landmark development, the world’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer, Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (HMCL), today announced forging a strategic partnership with Erik Buell Racing (EBR) of the US, encompassing multiple areas of collaboration.

As part of the partnership, HMCL will receive support in terms of cutting-edge technology and design to develop future models from EBR – the East Troy, Wisconsin-based firm, which specializes in designing and manufacturing powerful and high-speed motorcycles.

Announcing this here today, Mr. Pawan Munjal, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, Hero MotoCorp, said “It gives me immense pleasure to welcome Erik Buell to the exciting world of Hero MotoCorp. This is in keeping with my objective of quickly scaling up our own in-house R&D capabilities to a global two-wheeler technology power-house by leveraging a network of strategic international alliances. Erik and his team have been working closely with our engineers and designers to develop our next-generation range of products with cutting-edge technology and first-of-its-kind features.

“The Indian two-wheeler industry is set to evolve, and it is only natural that as the market leader, we are driving this change. As a part of this plan, Erik is going to play an integral role in giving shape to some of my dream two-wheelers for the discerning youth of today. So my R&D team and Erik’s team together have made some definitive progress in this direction, and we will hopefully be putting a few scorchers on the roads soon.”

Mr. Erik F. Buell, Chairman & CTO of EBR, said “EBR is delighted to partner with a company as iconic as Hero MotoCorp. Both HMCL and EBR share the common commitment to manufacturing world-class two-wheelers with technology of the future. I have personally been deeply impressed with and inspired by Pawan’s vision. He has given us a challenging brief, and our highly-motivated team is working towards giving shape to that dream. We look forward to designing technology solutions which are in line with contemporary global standards and also futuristic in their appeal and utility.”

Through this alliance, Hero MotoCorp will also for the first time enter the exciting world of international motorcycle racing. The company will mark its foray into the racing arena by sponsoring two teams: Team Hero and AMSOIL Hero – a first by any Indian two-wheeler company at the AMA Pro Racing National Guard Superbikes Championship. Popular young racer Danny Eslick will represent “Team Hero” while another well-known racer Geoff May will represent team AMSOIL Hero – both riding on EBR 1190RS bikes.

Hero MotoCorp also showcased an EBR 1190RS bike at the press conference here today.

The first race is scheduled at the Daytona Speedway, at Daytona beach, Florida, USA between March 15th & 17th, this year.

Commenting on the racing debut, Mr. Munjal said, “This is also a key part of our alliance with EBR. Both Erik and I felt that we should carry forward our partnership into the race track. As a company, we have always supported and nurtured sports and sporting talent in India. It is indeed a pleasure to sponsor two EBR teams at the AMA Championships and we are delighted to be taking an Indian brand to a highly-competitive and highly-popular international motorcycle race arena. We look forward to superlative performances from both Danny and Geoff.”

Commenting on the tie-up, Mr. Buell said, “I deeply appreciate the support provided by Pawan and Hero MotoCorp to our two teams and this will only make Danny and Geoff perform better this season. As I kept meeting Pawan over the past several months, I realised his keen interest in moto-racing and the ‘Team Hero’ at AMA Championships is really a natural extension of our strategic collaboration. Top-class motorcycle racing is a very popular sport in the US, and the presence of the ‘Hero’ brand name is going to lend a lot of stature and excitement to all EBR fans out there.”

Hero MotoCorp is also developing the concept hybrid scooter called ‘Leap’, showcased at the recently-concluded Auto Expo, in collaboration with EBR.

EBR 1190RS is the flagship bike from EBR, and an exclusive engineering marvel, as the company is producing only 100 inaugural units of these, including a handful of the carbon edition package. The EBR 1190RS is taking the American motorcycle racing world by storm with its performance, styling and handling.

Before he became successful engineer, motorcycle designer and motorcycle manufacturer, Erik Buell was a motorcycle racer, and he has brought all his past experience from the race track to build the 1190RS.

Pirelli Moves to Third Overall After Podium Finish

Sold-Out Home Crowd at 2012 Atlanta Supercross

ATLANTA, GA – February 26, 2012 - (Motor Sports Newswire) – Two Pirelli riders finished in the top five in the main event of the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross at the Georgia Dome this evening in front of a sold-out crowd in Atlanta.  James “Bubba” Stewart and Davi Millsaps of the Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX team placed third and fourth respectively.

“It feels great being back in Atlanta,” said Stewart, who true to form, got the party started early as he emerged in the rider introductions impersonating the musician Prince with heartfelt rendition of the singer’s 1984 hit “Purple Rain”.  No stranger to the Georgia Dome, Stewart won the 2007 AMA Supercross main event here in 2007.  “I’ve got to give it up to Pirelli,” he continued. “They gave me some good tires.  We’re building, the team is working hard and we are getting better.”

The heat race was a Pirelli dominated affair with Stewart and Millsaps taking first and second, both utilizing Pirelli Scorpion MX family of tires to put in solid performances all night.

“It’s so rewarding to take home a podium finish in Atlanta,” commented Josh Whitmire, Off-Road Manager for Pirelli. “Our whole team was here supporting JGRMX, including engineers and the racing boss from Italy. The Georgia Dome hummed with electricity all evening; James and Davi rode their hearts out and more importantly, put points on the board.”

The East Coast swing of the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross series kicked off last weekend at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas and continued this week in Pirelli Tire North America’s own backyard – Atlanta – just 70 miles from the company’s North American headquarters in Rome, GA.

Round nine of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship will be held March 3rd at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri, airing live on SPEED at 7:00 p.m. (CST).

Ryan Dungey Grabs Second Win of 2012 Monster Energy Supercross Season in Atlanta

26 02 2012

Barcia Stays Perfect in Eastern Regional Supercross Lites Class

ATLANTA, GAFebruary 25, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – A sold out crowd of 71,009 filled the Georgia Dome to capacity on Saturday night, as Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, hosted its eighth race of the 2012 season. Following a strong start, Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., fended off all challengers to take his second victory of the year. In the Eastern Regional Supercross Lites Class, GEICO Honda’s Justin Barcia, of Ochlocknee, Ga., remained undefeated in the second race of that championship.

In his first race as a substitute rider for American Honda Muscle Milk, Cole Seely, of Murrieta, Calif., grabbed the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot Award with Dungey and Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX’s Davi Millsaps, of Murrieta, Calif., hot on his wheels. Behind them, championship leader Ryan Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash., found himself in sixth aboard his Monster Energy Kawasaki at the conclusion of the opening lap. Fellow title contender, Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX’s James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., was also slow out of the gates, crossing the line in ninth on Lap 1.

Seely fought off Dungey’s pressure for several laps, but the 2010 Supercross Class Champion eventually worked his way into the lead on Lap 7 and looked to pull away. As Dungey made his move forward, both Villopoto and Stewart were doing the same and by Lap 11, the trio was running first, second, and third, respectively.

Villopoto slowly ate away at Dungey’s advantage throughout the second half of the main event, even overcoming an early tip over to have a shot at his fourth consecutive win. On the final lap, the pair was separated by just over a second, with Villopoto charging. A slight bobble by the defending champion coming out of the sand section allowed Dungey to extend his lead and give KTM just its second main event win in the Supercross Class.

“To get that first win right off the bat (for KTM) in Phoenix was nice, but it took a while after that,” said Dungey. “But, to back it up here in Atlanta, it was a great night. We’ve been looking for that one for a while. The whole team has been working hard and things haven’t gone our way with testing and stuff, but we’re coming around to it and I think things are progressively getting better.”

Villopoto held on for second, to lose just three points in the championship standings, while Stewart finished third.

“I just made a little mistake, and early on in the race I fell over and that cost me, huge,” said Villopoto. “The track was tough tonight, you could really see (that) and I just slipped up and washed the front end out. Overall, we had a good night. It just wasn’t the best of weeks coming into this (race), so to come out with a second is good.”

In the Supercross Lites Class Main Event, Barcia was the first rider out of the gate, claiming the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot Award, while Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki teammates Blake Baggett, of Grand Terrace, Calif., and Darryn Durham, of Butler, Pa., followed him out of the first corner. After posting the fastest practice lap of the day, Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen, of Murrieta, Calif., crossed the line at the end of the opening lap in 14th place, following a tough start.

Barcia set a torrid pace to start the 15-lap main event, pulling away to a multiple-second advantage over the field. Behind him, a heated battled for the podium took place between Baggett, Rockstar Energy Racing Suzuki’s Blake Wharton, of Beaumont, Texas, and GEICO Honda’s Justin Bogle, of Cushing, Okla.

Baggett asserted himself in second and after battling for several laps, Bogle worked his way past Wharton on Lap 9. Barcia completed his perfect effort by taking the checkered flag 2.253 seconds ahead of Baggett. Bogle held on for his first career podium finish in third, to go along with his first career heat race victory earlier in the evening.

“Two for two (is) not a bad way to start,” said Barcia. “I wanted a good start, I got the holeshot, and just rode hard from there. The track was super tough tonight. It was very slick and there were a lot of places where the bike was sliding around. I was trying not to make any mistakes. Fortunately, everything went really smooth and we got the win.”

Barcia extended his points lead in the Eastern Regional Supercross Lites Class to 12 over Durham.
