Motorcycle awareness gets attention on Capitol Hill

24 05 2013

PICKERINGTON, OH – May 24, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The importance of drivers watching for motorcycles, and motorcyclists riding safely, got some much-needed attention in Washington, D.C., on May 22.

U.S. Rep. Tim Griffin (R-Ark.), co-chairman of the Congressional Motorcycle Caucus, made a statement for the record noting May is Motorcycle Awareness Month and stressed the importance of motorcycle safety.

“Drivers’ failure to see motorcycles is one of the leading causes of motorcycle crashes, and the prevalence of distracted and inattentive driving poses a significant threat to motorcycle riders,” Griffin said.

“I urge vehicle drivers to check mirrors and blind spots and actively look for motorcycles, especially at intersections,” he said. “Taking that brief moment can mean the difference between life and death for motorcycle riders and vehicle drivers alike.

“I also encourage my fellow motorcycle riders to take appropriate safety precautions by practicing safe riding techniques and wearing appropriate safety equipment,” he said.

The Congressional Motorcycle Caucus includes members of Congress from both sides of the aisle who are committed to advancing motorcycling and improving the safety of motorcyclists. U.S. Rep. Michael Burgess (R-Texas) is the other co-chairman.

Motorcycle Caucus Co-Chair Representative Tim Griffin Highlights Motorcycle Safety

24 05 2013

Washington, D.C. – May 24, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Congressional Motorcycle Caucus Co-Chair Representative Tim Griffin (R-AR) entered a statement into the May 22 Congressional Record to highlight motorcycle safety and to promote May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.

Griffin said for the record, “Mr. Speaker, as Co-Chair of the Congressional Motorcycle Caucus and a motorcycle enthusiast, I rise today in support of Motorcycle Awareness Month, which is celebrated each May. With more than 27 million motorcycle riders today, and that number steadily increasing, being mindful of other types of road and highway users is critical for everyone. This is especially the case as the weather is warming up and more motorcycle riders are hitting the road.”

Griffin also recognized that motorcycle safety is a responsibility shared by all road users. “Drivers’ failure to see motorcycles is one of the leading causes of motorcycle crashes, and the prevalence of distracted and inattentive driving poses a significant threat to motorcycle riders. I urge vehicle drivers to check mirrors and blind spots and actively look for motorcycles–especially at intersections. Taking that brief moment can mean the difference between life and death for motorcycle riders and vehicle drivers alike.”

Griffin concluded with an admonition to motorcyclists to also take responsibility for their safety. “I also encourage my fellow motorcycle riders to take appropriate safety precautions by practicing safe riding techniques and wearing appropriate safety equipment.”

The Motorcycle Industry Council’s Director of Federal Affairs, Duane Taylor noted, “Congressmen Griffin is a rider himself and a great friend and supporter of motorcyclists and the motorcycle industry. We would like to thank him for highlighting motorcycle safety and using his position as a Member of Congress to urge all road users to play an active role in the safety of motorcyclists.”

Taylor concluded, “Congressman Griffin and the other members of the Motorcycle Caucus are great champions for motorcyclists. We encourage all riders to urge their Representative to join the Congressional Motorcycle Caucus.”

The Motorcycle Industry Council exists to preserve, protect and promote motorcycling through government relations, communications and media relations, statistics and research, aftermarket programs, development of data communications standards, and activities surrounding technical and regulatory issues. As a not-for-profit, MIC a national industry association seeks to support motorcyclists by representing manufacturers and distributors of motorcycles, scooters, motorcycle/ATV/ROV parts and accessories, and members of allied trades such as insurance, finance and investment firms, media companies and consultants.

The MIC is headquartered in Irvine, Calif., with a government relations office in metropolitan Washington, D.C. First called the MIC in 1970, the organization has been in operation since 1914. Visit the MIC at www.mic.org.

American Motorcyclist Association stresses the importance of trails

24 05 2013

PICKERINGTON, OH – May 24, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) -  As Charlotte, N.C., Mayor Anthony Foxx is being considered in Washington, D.C., to be the U.S. transportation secretary, the American Motorcyclist Association is reminding lawmakers that the secretary is responsible for the Recreational Trails Program.

The AMA’s concerns were raised at the nomination hearing by U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.). She asked Foxx: “If confirmed, will you work to ensure that this valuable program [RTP] continues to meet the needs of all trail users in Minnesota and across the nation?”

Foxx responded that he “looks forward to working with you [Klobuchar] on these issues.”

Those trails are very important for tourism and rural economies, are a way to explore the nation’s natural beauty and provide a way to enjoy physical activity, wrote Wayne Allard, AMA vice president for government relations, in a column that appeared in the Washington, D.C., newspaper The Hill on May 21.

“I cannot stress enough the importance of this program,” wrote Allard, who is a former U.S. representative and U.S. senator. “In my home state of Colorado, outdoor recreation is a $13.2 billion-a-year industry. Across the country, outdoor recreation generates $646 billion a year in consumer spending and supports 6.1 million direct American jobs that can never be outsourced.”

Allard wrote that since 1991, Congress has considered the benefits of recreational trails when authoring our nation’s transportation bills. Out of this bipartisan consideration, the Recreational Trails Program emerged as an equitable way to fund the nation’s vast system of trails.

The RTP is a federal grant program that provides funds to the states to develop and maintain recreational trails and related facilities for all recreationists. RTP funds come from excise taxes generated by fuel purchased for off-highway vehicle recreation — snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, off-highway motorcycles and off-highway light trucks.

Because these users pay the federal excise tax, the RTP receives its funding from the federal Highway Trust Fund. However, even at the program’s current funding level, $85 million a year, off-highway-vehicle users are paying significantly more in fuel taxes than the RTP receives to fund trails.

Each state has the flexibility to determine how the RTP grants will be awarded and administered. The only stipulation is that 30 percent of obligated funds must go to motorized trails, 30 percent to non-motorized trails and 40 percent to mixed-use trails.

“Recreational trails provide cost effective ways for families and friends to get together, recreate and create lasting memories,” Allard wrote. “As Foxx testifies about the nation’s crumbling infrastructure, let’s remember his constituency is not just those who ride and drive trains, planes, trucks, SUVs, automobiles and on-highway motorcycles. It extends beyond traditional users of transportation to include recreationists of all types.”

FIM World Championship Contenders Clement Desalle and Kevin Strijbos Join Round 2 of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship

24 05 2013

Belgium Natives to Race the Rockwell Watches Thunder Valley National This Weekend

MORGANTOWN, WV – May 24, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – FIM World Championship contenders Clement Desalle and Kevin Strijbos will join the 2013 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, this Saturday, May 25, when the Rockstar Energy Suzuki riders attend the Rockwell Watches Thunder Valley National at Thunder Valley MX Park in Lakewood, Colo.

Desalle and Strijbos both hail from Belgium and are currently in contention for the MX1 (450 Class) title, ranked third and fourth, respectively, in the Grand Prix standings. With that series now on break, the two world-class competitors will add even more international talent to a championship that already boasts stars like Chad Reed and Michael Byrne of Australia, Ken Roczen of Germany, South Africa’s Tyla Rattray and Gareth Swanepoel, Scotland’s Dean Wilson, Ecquador’s Martin Davalos and Marvin Musquin of France.

Clement Desalle might be a familiar name with Lucas Oil Pro Motocross fans since the Belgian has visited the series twice before. In 2009 he finished tenth overall at Washougal while riding in the 450 Class, including a third-place finish in Moto 1. And in 2010 he visited the Unadilla National, finishing an impressive second overall in the 450 Class after battling with eventual winner and series champion Ryan Dungey.

Desalle has visited the Thunder Valley Motocross Park before. In 2010 he was a member of Team Belgium at the Motocross of Nations, held at the popular Lakewood venue. Desalle finished third in the final moto behind Team USA’s Dungey and Andrew Short, respectively. Both Dungey and Short will be on hand again, but rather than Team USA, Dungey will be on a Red Bull KTM and Short, a native of Colorado, will compete aboard a BTOSports.com KTM.

Like Desalle, Strijbos has finished as runner-up in the FIM World Championships in the past but he has never won the title. The 27-year-old Strijbos (pronounced “Stry-bose”) has been racing professionally since 2000, though the Rockwell Watches Thunder Valley National will mark his AMA debut.

The Rockwell Watches Thunder Valley National will feature all four motos live, as NBC Sports Network will air the first set of motos live beginning at 3 p.m. Eastern. The live coverage will continue on FUEL TV for the second motos, beginning at 5 p.m. Eastern. All four motos will also have live streaming coverage. Regional titles lay path for Red Bull AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship presented by Amsoil

23 05 2013

PICKERINGTON, OH – May 23, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Some of the most-talented American Motorcyclist Association members in the country aspire to the Red Bull AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship presented by Amsoil in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. But before they can line up at the National on July 28 through Aug. 4, these riders must first compete at one of 12 highly competitive AMA Regional Championships, featuring the best motocross racers from each region.

“It’s such an accomplishment to qualify through the AMA Area Qualifiers and earn a spot at the starting gate at the AMA Regional Championships,” said AMA Motocross Manager Kip Bigelow. “The AMA Regional Championships draw the country’s best amateur motocross racers, competing for the opportunity to race in the world’s premier amateur motocross event.”

The AMA amateur national program includes 50 Area Qualifiers and 12 Regional Championships. Several thousand riders compete for the roughly 1,500 qualifying spots up for grabs. These riders then advance to the Red Bull AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship presented by Amsoil to race for AMA national No. 1 plates in 36 classes. The best riders will compete for the coveted AMA Motocross Horizon Award, presented to the amateur racer poised for success in the pro ranks.

“The AMA Regional Championships are among the largest amateur motocross races in the country, with as many as 900 competitors at any one race,” said MX Sports Director Tim Cotter.

MX Sports is the AMA’s promoting partner for the Red Bull AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship presented by Amsoil. The partnership dates to 1982, when MX Sports began managing the series and moved the championship finale to its current location in Hurricane Mills, Tenn.

“The AMA is dedicated to providing the best tracks, the best facilities and the best organizers to the AMA Regional Championship schedule for our members, and 2013 is no exception,” Bigelow added. “We look forward to working with the MX Sports staff and the Regional Championship organizers to provide an unforgettable experience and the opportunity to race in August at the greatest amateur motocross race in existence.”

The AMA Regional Championships kick off this coming weekend with the Southwest and Mideast AMA Regional Championships, May 25-26. All regional titles will be decided as June comes to a close.

The Red Bull AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship presented by Amsoil is one of the most diverse national championships in America. It includes classes for riders from 4 years old to 50-plus on motorcycles ranging from 50cc minibikes to state-of-the-art highly modified 450cc motocross machines.

The success of the national championship has produced a long list of AMA Supercross and motocross superstars. Riders who have progressed through the program include Ricky Carmichael, Jeremy McGrath, Travis Pastrana, James Stewart, Kevin Windham, Ryan Dungey, Ryan Villopoto and many more. Nearly every professional racer competing in the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship earned his way to the pro ranks through the AMA amateur program.

The AMA launched the amateur national motocross championship program in 1975. That year, a series of regional races qualified 135 riders in three classes — 125cc, 250cc and open — for the championship round in Baldwin, Kan. The program evolved rapidly over the next few years to include skill and youth divisions, with championship finales run in varying locations across the country. In 1982, the event moved to its current location at the Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn., where it continues to crown the country’s top amateur motocross racers every summer.
