Daytona Beach Bike Week Features Full Slate of Two-Wheeled Fun

7 03 2013

PICKERINGTON, OH – March 7, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – On Jan. 24, 1937, the first running of the Daytona 200 took place on the hard sand of Daytona Beach, Fla. Since that race, won by AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Ed Kretz of Monterey Park, Calif., the annual event has grown into a motorcycling mecca, packed full of racing and recreational riding events.

This year, AMA-sanctioned events will be among the most popular Bike Week attractions, from amateur dirt-track racing to an AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame celebration to AMA Supercross on the infield of Daytona International Speedway.

“Daytona Beach in early March is all things motorcycling,” said AMA Vice President of Operations Jeff Massey. “If it happens on motorcycles, it happens at Daytona Beach. I personally can’t wait for the unofficial start of riding season to kick off at what many consider the biggest motorcycling week of the year.”

Motorcycling’s history will take center stage on March 15 at the Yamaha AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Breakfast at Daytona, presented by Motul. The annual fundraising event for the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, will be held at the Daytona 200 Club on the infield of Daytona International Speedway. This year, it will shine a spotlight on the Hall of Fame career of Scott Russell. Russell, who will be interviewed by noted race announcer Ben Cheatwood, will discuss his amazing five Daytona 200 wins as well as his championship-winning AMA and World Superbike career. Buy tickets and learn more at www.motorcyclemuseum.org.

One of the biggest rounds of the AMA Supercross Championship goes down March 9 at the Daytona Supercross by Honda, the 10th round of the series. Located on the infield of the hallowed grounds of Daytona International Speedway, the course features a varied layout with extended high-speed sections, massive jumps and a sand/dirt mix. Fans will be packed several deep along the fences to watch Ryan Villopoto, Ryan Dungey, Davi Millsaps, James Stewart and more race for glory as the 2013 winner of the Daytona Supercross by Honda. More info is at www.amasupercross.com.

Amateur competitors will get a shot at the Supercross course the following two days, March 10-11, at the Ricky Carmichael Daytona Amateur Supercross. Sanctioned by the AMA, and in partnership with MX Sports, the fourth annual event features two days of amateur racing at the same track that will showcase the best AMA Supercross racers in the world. Sign up to race at www.mxsports.com.

Off-road racers will get to experience their own history at the Alligator Enduro on March 14 in Favoretta, Fla. The Alligator Enduro has been thrilling both racers and fans for 63 years. Although the race isn’t always on the AMA National Enduro Championship Series calendar, it always draws a large contingent of pro riders — as well as weekend warriors who want to line up at the historic event. Find out more at www.daytonadirtriders.com.

Amateur dirt track kicks off just north of Daytona Beach in Savannah, Ga., which features an AMA All-Star dirt track on Oglethorpe Speedway’s half-mile on March 8 and an AMA Holeshot event and vintage national classes on March 9. On March 10-12, racing moves to Barberville, Fla., while March 10 will also feature an amateur short-track event on the Daytona Flat Track. The March 11-12 events will feature both AMA Holeshot points and racing in AMA vintage national classes. To contact the AMA about these events, see www.americanmotorcyclist.com/racing or call (614) 856-1900.

Amateur roadracing will also roll through Savannah, Ga., on March 9-10. The first round of the American Sportbike Racing Association’s AMA Featured Series will take place at Roebling Road Raceway. The ASRA Championship Series (www.asraracing.com) includes both amateur and expert competition in Thunderbike, SportBike and SuperStock classes.

Of course, Bike Week is not just about racing. Road riders make up the largest contingent at the annual rally. One place they’ll certainly congregate is at the Alligator Road Tour on March 13. This AMA-sanctioned ride is put on by the Daytona 200 M/C. The club, founded in 1943, is one of the oldest and most active in the state, and the ride features 150-200 miles of beautiful country roads, as well as a mystery destination for lunch. Registration is from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Daytona 200 Motorcycle Club. More info is available at www.daytona200mc.com.

For a dirtier time on two wheels, there’s the Cross-Florida Adventure Ride. This ride is part of the AMA Husqvarna National Dual Sport Series and the AMA Yamaha Super Ténéré Adventure Riding Series. The March 16-17 ride features some of the best back roads and optional trail sections crossing the peninsula. Find out more at www.dixiedualsport.com.

Another highlight for road riders is the Annual Iron Butt Association Party in Jacksonville, Fla. The event, March 13-14, also features the Battlefield 1000, an endurance road ride around Georgia and Florida. See www.ironbutt.com/daytona/ for more info.

Finally, the ever-popular March 16 Community Appreciation Parade, sponsored by the Daytona Beach Chamber of Commerce, will stage at the south parking lot of the Ocean Center beginning at 7 a.m. The parade is expected to feature hundreds of bikes as it rides from the Ocean Center to Daytona International Speedway.

For more on the Community Appreciation Parade, as well as a comprehensive list of all the two-wheeled excitement packed into Daytona Beach Bike Week, check out the official Bike Week calendar at www.daytonachamber.com.

Reigning Monster Energy Champion Ryan Villopoto Claims First Win of 2013 Season in Anaheim

20 01 2013

Eli Tomac Stays Perfect in Western Regional 250SX Class

ANAHEIM, CA – January 19, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The 2013 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, made its return visit to Anaheim on Saturday night, hosting its 59th race inside Angel Stadium in front of a crowd of 37,789 fans. After a 16th-place finish to start the season and a runner-up effort a week ago, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash., emerged victorious for the first time this season. In the Western Regional 250SX Class, GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac, of Cortez, Colo., raced to his third consecutive victory to remain undefeated to start the season.

Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer, of Rupert, Idaho, earned the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot Award to start the 20-lap 450SX Class Main Event, with Team Honda Muscle Milk teammates Justin Barcia, of Ochlocknee, Ga., and Trey Canard, of Shawnee, Okla., in tow. Villopoto came out of the first corner in sixth but quickly began to make his move forward.

After slipping past Barcia, Canard passed Weimer for the lead on the first lap and opened a small gap. Barcia asserted himself in second, but came up short off a triple, ultimately failing to finish the race. The misfortune allowed Rockstar Energy Racing’s Davi Millsaps, of Murrieta, Calif., and Villopoto to take over second and third, respectively. On Lap 4, Villopoto made the pass on Millsaps, the current championship points leader, for second and set his sights on Canard.

After quickly erasing his deficit, Villopoto positioned himself to make a pass for the lead and made an aggressive move on Canard on Lap 5 just before the finish line. Once out front, Villopoto logged fast, consistent laps to open up a healthy lead and win by nearly seven seconds.

“The season didn’t start like we wanted it to,” said Villopoto, who ended a five-race winless streak – tying for the longest he’s had since capturing his first career win during the 2009 season. “I had a decent race in Phoenix and the team made good changes to the bike this week. We’ve finally got the ball going in the right direction and are digging ourselves out of the hole. Once I got into the lead, I was just trying to click of the laps and keep it consistent. The track was really slippery tonight, but I still tried to keep the pace up.”

Canard held on for his second runner-up finish this season, while Millsaps and TwoTwo Motorsports Honda’s Chad Reed, of Australia, engaged in a captivating battle for third. A tip-over by Millsaps ultimately handed Reed his first podium result of the season, but Millsaps still maintains possession of the points lead after finishing fourth.

Millsaps holds a three-point lead over Canard in the 450SX Class standings, with Reed an additional four points back in third. Villopoto’s win helped move him into fourth, 11 points from the lead.

As the gate dropped on the Western Regional 250SX Class Main Event, Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda’s Cole Seely, of Newbury Park, Calif., grabbed the Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot Award just ahead of Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen, of Germany. Behind the duo, Valli Motorsports Yamaha’s Travis Baker, of Temecula, Calif., and Tomac battled for the third spot.

Seely set a strong pace to start the 15-lap Main Event, but Roczen and Tomac stayed within striking distance, allowing the trio to open up a significant gap over the field. On Lap 8, Roczen attempted to make a pass on Seely for the lead, but it allowed Tomac to take over the position and set his sights on the top spot. Just two laps later after closing to within a fender, Tomac made an impressive outside pass on Seely to move into the lead and carried it through to the finish for his 10th career win.

“I definitely started off slower [today],” commented Tomac, who has been under the weather. “I was good in one practice and struggled in the other, so it definitely made the race matter that much for the [win]. It was a great battle out there. The track was tough, so I had to keep my feet tight and the bike under control. From now on I just need to keep it on the podium.”

Roczen made a late pass to finish second, while Seely rounded out on the podium in third.

Tomac’s lead now stands at nine points over Roczen, who has finished second in all three races this season. Seely has possession of third, 17 points out of the lead.

SPEED will broadcast the Western Regional 250SX Class race tomorrow at Noon ET, followed by CBS Sports’ broadcast the 450SX Class at 1:00 p.m. ET.

Akira Narita to Compete in AMA Supercross

4 01 2013

TORRANCE, CA – January 4, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Akira Narita will be heading to the U.S. to compete in the first few rounds of the 2013 Supercross series starting with the season opener at Anaheim stadium. Narita, 33, is the current All Japan National Motocross Series champion, but he’s no stranger to that title: he’s won a remarkable eight All Japan National Motocross Series championships starting in 2002 when he won his first title in the 250 class.

Narita will be competing aboard a Honda CRF450R for Team HRC (Honda Racing Corporation). Narita sees his participation is the U.S. Supercross series as a way to boost his riding to the next level. “Supercross racing in the U.S. is the highest level of the sport, and the best possible training for me prior to the All Japan championship,” said Narita. “I appreciate the support of HRC and American Honda in my racing here.”

While this HRC effort is separate from American Honda, you can find Narita’s support rig parked with the Team Honda Muscle Milk trucks so the teams can work together to assist Narita in his quest to compete in the most competitive Supercross field in the world. Look for this multi-time Japanese champion on the starting line at Anaheim 1 on January 5, 2013.

Highly Anticipated 2013 Monster Energy Supercross Championship Kicks off This Saturday Night

2 01 2013

AURORA, IL – January 2, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The 2013 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, kicks off this Saturday at Angel Stadium and for the first time in 40 years of racing, 10 riders with 450SX Class Main Event wins will take part in this epic season led by two-time defending champion Ryan Villopoto.

Media Day is Thursday, January 3 from Noon – 2:00 p.m., inside the Diamond Club of Angel Stadium, featuring Villopoto, James Stewart, Chad Reed and Ryan Dungey. Riders will be available for interviews and photographs before they ride the track for the media.

The 2012 Monster Energy Supercross Championship season unfolded like a war of attrition. Throughout the 17-race season, the sport’s top five riders were forced to miss races, or in some cases the remainder of their season, with injuries. Before the gate dropped on the opening race the season, the sport possessed the deepest field in its history and subsequently lived up to the hype through the first four weekends.

Monster Energy SX

Only once before had four different riders won the first four races of a season, so the stage appeared to be set for a different rider to win on any given night. When Villopoto, 2004 & 2008 450SX Class Champion Reed, 2010 450SX Champion Dungey and 2007 & 2009 450SX Champion Stewart all grabbed victories to start the season, they became only the second group of riders ever to accomplish this feat in 39 years of competition. In 2013, the plot will undoubtedly thicken as this elite group will be joined by two highly touted rookies, Justin Barcia and Dean Wilson.

A major blow to the 2012 championship occurred to Honda’s Trey Canard, a title contender who was already battling a slow start to the season. Canard fell victim to a massive crash at Dodger Stadium, resulting in three fractured vertebrae and a spinal cord injury that kept him off the bike for seven months.

At the return stop inside Angel Stadium, Villopoto made a stand and became the first rider to win two races in the season, moving into the points lead for the second time in 2012. He never looked back, winning two more consecutive races.

“This year (2012), I worked harder than I ever have,” said Villopoto. “However, backing up what you have already done definitely brings added pressure to win.”

Part of Reed’s racing philosophy is consistency. He holds the record for all-time podium finishes — 119 in 148 starts — and is one of just two riders to win at least one 450SX Class race in nine seasons. In 85 percent of 148 450SX Class starts, he’s finished in the top five a record 129 times. But last year, for only the second time in his career, Reed was forced to withdraw from the championship hunt due to injury. While stalking Villopoto for the lead near the halfway mark at Cowboys Stadium, Reed went down hard. In a violent crash that lasted just seconds, Reed’s injury report read: fractured T-6, two ribs, tibia, fibula, torn ACL, LCL, and meniscus.

“I’ve seen a lot in my life career. I’ve been a big sponge and taken it all in — the good, the bad, the ugly,” said Reed. “l have lived life to the fullest, and I believe that helps me stay motivated and committed to what I love to do on the weekends. I’ve been very lucky to have always been in the fight for podiums, wins and the title. I’m hoping ’13 will be no different! I learned a lot in 2012, and I’m ready to put that to good use.”

Stewart’s implausible speed would again become his worst enemy. He crashed in seven of 11 races, but still won two Main Events. Through the first 10 races, he averaged a fifth-place finish, but after the 44th win of his career, he joined the injured reserve list, only to come back for one more race, where he finished 20th following a crash. Considered the fastest man on the planet, Stewart either wins or crashes 91 percent of the time. To crack the code, Stewart needs to slow down to win championships. His lifetime winning percentage in races where he did not crash is 84.62 percent. When he won his first of two championships in 2007, his winning percentage in races where he did not crash was 100 percent.

“It’s going take speed, but it’s probably going to be about consistency more than anything,” Stewart said about the strategy to win this year’s title. “There are a lot of fast guys out there, and all of them want to win. None of us will have the luxury of a bad weekend this year.”

At one point in Stewart’s career he was squarely focused on breaking Jeremy McGrath’s all-time record of 72 wins. He told ESPN the Magazine, “The record will fall. I am going to make sure of it.”

Now that he’s more than halfway to the seemingly unbreakable mark, Stewart is not as sure about becoming the all-time winningest supercross racer.

“I would love to,” said Stewart about snapping the record. “But it’s going take some work. I still have a little ways to go, so we’ll see how it plays out over time.”

Heading into St. Louis, Dungey crashed during a practice session at his training facility, breaking his collarbone. To maintain his position in the title fight, he raced in St. Louis and finished second — but that made the fracture worse. As a result, Dungey was forced to have the injury surgically repaired, missing the next five races. He closed out the season with two consecutive wins and finished third in the championship during his first season on the Red Bull KTM team, delivering the Austrian team its first 450SX Class wins and best season finish ever.

As fate would have it, two races after clinching his second consecutive Monster Energy Supercross Championship, Ryan Villopoto crashed in the Main Event of his home race in Seattle and tore his ACL, sidelining him for the remainder of the year. The season closed out with Andrew Short capturing the first victory of his seven-year 450SX Class career, followed by Dungey sweeping the final two races of the season.

Graduating from the 250SX Class is standout Justin Barcia. Barcia finished second overall as a rookie in 2010 and moved on to win back-to-back Eastern Regional Championships in 2011 and 2012. En route to a dominant 2012 season, Barcia won six of nine races and closed the season out with a 45-point lead over the second-place finisher with a 1.6 finishing average.

After establishing himself as one of the brightest rising stars of the sport over the last three seasons, Barcia is ready to compete in the 450SX Class. His arrival will add to what is already the deepest field of riders in Monster Energy Supercross history.

If history repeats itself, Barcia will have his work cut out for him in 2013. Only twice in the sport’s history has a rookie claimed the 450SX Class Championship, with Jeremy McGrath in 1993, and most recently Ryan Dungey in 2010.

Barcia puts less stock in history than he does his skill set, saying he’s a legitimate title contender. “That’s the plan; that’s what I was hired for,” said Barcia. “It’s like 250cc (250SX Class) racing with more experienced riders.”

In this sport, anything can happen and Stewart put it best in saying, “What if the top four became the top, five, six, seven, eight ….”

Only time will tell as the 2013 Monster Energy Supercross season prepares to challenge the fastest riders on the planet with 17 weekends of the greatest spectacle on dirt.

SPEED will broadcast the race live from Angel Stadium on Saturday, January 5 at 9:30 p.m. ET.

26 12 2012

PICKERINGTON, OH – December 26, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Staying connected to the most-thrilling indoor motorsport on Earth is now easier than ever, thanks to a new AMA Supercross app for Apple and Android smartphones. The app includes live timing and scoring, series news and historical results, the American Motorcyclist Association reports.

AMA SX app“AMA Supercross fans accept no less than full-throttle action on the track, so it only makes sense that they’ll want up-to-the-second data when they turn to their smartphones,” said AMA Director of Supercross Kevin Crowther. “While live and in-person is always the best way to experience AMA Supercross, the AMA Supercross app delivers all that data and more to fans who can’t make it to the track — as well as those at the stadium who want a completely immersive experience.”

In addition to live timing and scoring for each event, the official AMA Supercross app includes access to historical results, point standings, news and links to social media outlets so fans can share their excitement about AMA Supercross.

The AMA Supercross app is regularly priced at $1.99, but is available now for the pre-season price of $0.99. It can be downloaded from iTunes or the Google Play store. To buy the app, search for “AMA Pro Supercross.”

AMA Supercross live timing and scoring is also available online at www.amasupercross.com. In addition to live race updates, www.amasupercross.com includes archived practice, qualifying and results information; on-location race-day photography by one of the sport’s premier shooters, Jeff Kardas; the official 2013 AMA Supercross Series Media Guide; rider numbers and biographies; schedule and ticket information; the official AMA Supercross Series Rulebook; and rider bulletins and competition notices.

AMA Supercross live timing and scoring will begin Saturday, Jan. 5, as timed practice gets underway at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif. Photos, race reports, interviews and commentary will be posted as soon as they are available.
