Titles Are Up for Grabs as Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship Hosts 2012 Season Finale from Lake Elsinore on Saturday

4 09 2012

250 Class and Women’s Motocross Championship Crowns Still Undecided

MORGANTOWN, WV – September 4, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Following 11 rounds of grueling competition on the most challenging and demanding tracks in the country, the 2012 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, will come to a dramatic conclusion on Saturday with the inaugural Red Bull Lake Elsinore National.

The series’ highly-anticipated return to Southern California is signified by the introduction a new home for the Nationals in the heart of the motocross industry. After months of hard work in preparing a layout worthy of challenging the world’s best riders, while also serving as a premier venue for spectator viewing, Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park’s unveiling will ultimately decide which riders will walk away as champion in both the 250 Class and Women’s Motocross Championship (WMX Class). Although the 450 Class title has already been decided, there is still plenty on the line in the search to become the first winner at the brand new Lake Elsinore facility.

Last weekend at Steel City, Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey refused to hold back despite capturing his second 450 Class title at the previous round. In two attempts, the newly-crowned champion had never won at the track in the premier class prior to this season. On Saturday, he left little doubt that his motivation to win is as strong as ever, sweeping the motos for the seventh time this season and extending his impressive win streak to nine races.

With one round remaining, Dungey has the opportunity to match the win total from his record-setting rookie season in 2010 when he won his first premier class title. With each respective win this season, Dungey makes history for KTM, which had never captured an overall win in the 450 Class prior to this summer. Additionally, Dungey has not finished worse than third in a single moto this season and has already surpassed the statistical marks he set in 2010 for laps led, average start, and average finish, and needs just 13 points on Saturday to match his total from that season, making his 2012 campaign one of the most statistically dominant in history.

Several riders will be looking to end Dungey’s reign atop the podium, led by MotoConcepts Suzuki’s Mike Alessi, who has secured the runner-up spot in the championship and returns to his native Southern California. Additionally, perennial front-runners like Chaparral Honda’s Andrew Short and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer will be in search of their first career motocross victories as they also do battle for the third and final spot on the championship podium.

Currently in the midst of a nine-race winning streak, Ryan Dungey will look to equal the number of victories from his title-winning 2010 season.

After a parity-driven season that has witnessed four different overall winners through 11 rounds, the 250 Class title fight will come down to the final pair of motos of the 2012 season. Currently, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett has possession of the points lead, and has since the opening round of the season. However, a strong charge in recent weeks by GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac has brought the pair to within 14 points of one another, with fellow GEICO Honda rider Justin Barcia just 18 points back. Factor in Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen, who sits 45 points out of the lead, and four riders enter Lake Elsinore with a shot at their first career national title.

Last weekend at Steel City, Tomac put forth one of the most dominant efforts of the season, sweeping the motos to claim his fourth victory of the season and equal the class-leading win total he now shares with Baggett. Tomac has arguably more momentum than anyone heading into Saturday’s race, but all four contenders enter Lake Elsinore on an even playing field, having never raced on the track before.

Baggett hopes a return to his native Southern California can provide an edge, having missed out on the podium for the past two rounds. In that span, Baggett has lost 18 points to Tomac, who has surged from third to second in the standings. Barcia’s consistency, in addition to his pair of victories this season, has kept him in the thick of the title fight all season long, while Roczen’s distinction of being the best starter in the 250 Class has made him a fixture at the front of the field, despite having yet to win a race in his first season of competition on U.S. soil.

Eli Tomac has made up 18 points on Blake Baggett over the last two rounds and is within striking distance of the 250 Class points lead.

Through the first seven rounds of its eight-race championship, the WMX Class has provided arguably the most captivating competition of the summer. Rockstar Energy Racing Suzuki’s Jessica Patterson has controlled the point standings since the opening round, but following a season filled with both great racing and dramatic storylines, three women enter Lake Elsinore with an opportunity to claim the championship.

Sitting just five points behind Patterson is longtime rival Ashley Fiolek, whose class-leading four victories for Team Honda Muscle Milk have put her in position to repeat as champion, despite missing the fourth round of competition due to injury. An additional five points back is Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda’s Tarah Gieger, who has yet to win this season, but has been arguably the most consistent of the three.

Patterson has battled through a broken hand since the halfway point of the season, not missing a single round of action but losing valuable points to her rivals with finishes outside the top 10. As a result, Patterson has the worst finishing average of the trio, but with nearly a month passed since the WMX Class was in action, she and her rivals enter Lake Elsinore refreshed and ready to lay it all on the line.

The WMX Championship will come to a dramatic conclusion on Saturday with Fiolek (1), Patterson (2), and Gieger (3) all gunning for the title.
(Courtesy Carl Stone)

In addition to the competition for the 450 Class victory and respective 250 and WMX Class championships, the final round for the season-long Oakley Bomb Award program will also come to an exciting conclusion. The Oakley Bomb Award is awarded to the rider who posts the fastest lap in practice for both the 450 and 250 Classes. At season’s end, the rider with the most awards will be presented with an Elite Oakley Time Bomb II Swiss Automatic Watch. With five fast laps this season, Tomac has already secured the coveted watch for the 250 Class. However, the 450 Class is still up for grabs with both Dungey and Team Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart tied with four awards apiece. With Stewart out of action due to injury, Dungey will look to claim the watch on Saturday.

Located in the hotbed of the motocross industry, and about an hour outside of the major metropolitan areas of Los Angeles and San Diego, Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park serves as an ideal location for fans of the sport across the entire southern portion of the state. It’s also well known to students of the sport’s history as the site of the Lake Elsinore Grand Prix, which was featured prominently in the epic motorcycle racing documentary film On Any Sunday back in 1971 – one year before the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship was born.

The Marc Peters-designed venue is state-of-the-art in terms of motocross and features multiple elevation changes, spectacular obstacles, and easy access for the fans. The facility was designed with not only riders but spectators in mind as well, with paved roads and walkways, lush landscaping, camping amenities and designated areas at multiple elevations for viewing.

The season-ending Red Bull Lake Elsinore National will feature live broadcast coverage of the opening motos of both the 450 and 250 Classes on FUEL TV, beginning at 4 p.m. Eastern, while also streaming live online at AlliSports.com. Same-day final moto coverage of both classes can be seen on NBC Sports Network, beginning at 11 p.m. Eastern.

Andrew Short Captures First Career Monster Energy Supercross Victory in Seattle

22 04 2012

Ryan Sipes Wins Western Regional Supercross Lites’ Return to Action

SEATTLE, WA - April 21, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship’s return to the West Coast was greeted by 52,731 fans inside CenturyLink Field on Saturday night, for the 15th race of the 2012 season. After nearly six seasons of racing in the Supercross Class, L&MC Racing Honda’s Andrew Short, of Smithville, Texas, captured his first career win in the premier division, leading every lap. Following a two-month break from Western Regional Supercross Lites Class competition, Star/Valli Yamaha’s Ryan Sipes, of Ekron, Ky., grabbed his first win of the season.

Short was the first rider out of the gate in the Supercross Class Main Event, securing the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot Award with Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Brayton, of Murrieta, Calif., and Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen, of Murrieta, Calif., in tow. Behind them, 2012 Monster Energy Supercross Champion Ryan Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash., went down following a mid-pack start, appearing to favor his leg while on the ground. The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider walked off the track under his own power, but did not complete a lap of competition in front of his hometown crowd.

“Ryan didn’t get such a good start,” said Reid Nordin, Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Manager. “He was charging through the pack and lost the front end and ended up getting a handle bar to the gut, which knocked the wind out of him, and he got a stinger when the foot peg came down on him. He’s really bummed out and upset with himself with what happened. He really wanted to do well for the fans here.”

Out front, Short and Roczen began a spirited battle for the lead on Lap 6, shifting momentum back-and-forth for several laps. Eventually, Short asserted himself in the top spot and took the win comfortably.

“It doesn’t feel real,” exclaimed Short, who missed seven races earlier this season to injury. “My team has been through some challenges, but we stuck together. There are so many people who have helped me in 11 years of doing this. I’m getting old. I didn’t believe (I could win) too much until the end and I think that’s been one of my problems in the past. All I wanted to do was be out here and to win is unreal.”

Roczen posted a career-best runner-up finish in first race in the Supercross Class this season. Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer, of Rupert, Idaho, rounded out the podium in third.

As the gate dropped on the Western Regional Supercross Lites Class Main Event, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson, of Menifee, Calif., edged out both Sipes and GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac, of Cortez, Colo., to grab the Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot Award, only to have Sipes assert himself in the lead shortly thereafter.

As Sipes opened a margin over the field, Wilson and Tomac went head to head in a heated battle for the runner-up spot. The class’ two top contenders for the championship traded the position a few times, before coming together on Lap 8, causing Wilson to fall to the ground.

Tomac looked to close in on Sipes, but was ultimately caught by Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin, of Murrieta, Calif., on the final lap. Sipes led all 15 laps of the main event, bouncing back from an injury he suffered earlier in the season.

“I worked really hard to come back here and didn’t think I’d be able to,” said Sipes, who has won just two points-paying races in his career. “I tried not to push. I tried to conserve and flow. I didn’t go fast, but I didn’t go slow either. The first five races (this season) were so tough. I felt good, but I was pushing too hard. It just feels so good to come back form (my) injury like this.”

Musquin held on for second, while Tomac finished third, taking over the points lead from Wilson, who recovered to finish seventh following his crash.

“I wasn’t happy with my heat race, but it was go time in the main event,” said Tomac, who holds a four-point lead in the championship standings. “Dean (Wilson) put some block passes on me and I said, ‘let’s play.’ I got into him there, but I guess that’s racing. I was rusty in practice but I gave it my all tonight. When we made contact, my clutch was bent, so I was riding in third gear. I’m looking forward to Salt Lake City because it’s like a home race for me.”

Monster Energy Supercross continues next weekend, hosting the 16th race of the 2012 season from Salt Lake City’s Rice Eccles Stadium.

Honda Starts the 2012 Season Strong

10 01 2012

TORRANCE, CA – January 10, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The 2012 season of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship series kicked off this past weekend at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, to a sold-out crowd of 45,050 race fans.

Anaheim marked the debut of Team Honda Muscle Milk, with Justin Brayton finishing fourth in the Supercross class on his CRF450R while teammate Trey Canard sat the event out recovering from a recent injury. Other Honda Red Riders also started the new season strong, including Chad Reed of TwoTwo Motorsports finishing in second, while Troy Lee Designs/ Lucas Oil/ Honda’s Cole Seely took the Supercross Lites win on his CRF250R, followed by GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac rounding out the podium in third.

After going down hard in the first corner of his heat race Brayton was forced to race the Last Chance Qualifier, where he finished first, allowing him to transfer to the main. Brayton spent most of the race in eighth, but surged with five laps to go, passing fellow Honda rider Andrew Short plus Ivan Tedesco and James Stewart to take fourth. “I found my groove on the track after a few practices and bike adjustments, and was pretty confident going into the night show,” said Brayton. “I had second gate pick in heat one, where I lined up right inside Villopoto. We got a pretty good start but something happened, sending his back tire into my front, causing me to high side and crash. After getting a good start and winning the LCQ, I boosted my confidence back up going into the main. I got a decent start in the main and was able to pick it up about halfway through, where I made my way to fourth.”

Reed put in a solid ride aboard his CRF450, starting with a win in his heat race and a second-place finish in the main. Going into the first turn Reed was in third place but he quickly passed Tedesco for second, which is where he stayed throughout the rest of the race. Fellow Honda riders Andrew Short and Kevin Windham also finished in the top ten with seventh- and eighth-place finishes.

Lites rider Cole Seely had an impressive start to the season with a first-place podium finish. “It’s great to come out on top at a race that gets so much hype,” said Seely. “This year my main focus is consistency and training. As long as I stay consistent each week I think I can win the championship.”

GEICO Honda rider Eli Tomac had a disappointing heat race but was able to come back and win the LCQ to move into the main, where he placed third on the podium. His teammate Will Hahn finished a respectable eighth place, while Travis Baker with Troy Lee Designs/ Lucas Oil/ Honda finished tenth.

In addition to title sponsor Supercross.com, the first media outlet to secure such a premier partnership and the opportunities it presents, American Honda, along with FMF, DID, GoPro, DC, Nudge, ODI Grips, CYCRA Plastic, MOTUL Oil, Mattrex, 1.7 Cleaning Supply, XPC, VP Fuels, Vortex Sprockets, Champion Storage, Ironclad, Twin Air, Dubya, Dunlop Tires, Aero Motorsports and Angry Bikes will be supporting the team.

The new Supercross.com / Honda racing team will feature Andrew Short as their first rider, and “Shorty” will be back on racing equipment he’s familiar with – factory Honda CRF450′s.

Andrew, one of the most like-able and friendly riders on the circuit said, “Teaming with Larry and Jeremy was the best place for me to go. They are very dedicated, and with Honda I know I’m getting a good group of people behind the team as well. I’m looking forward to racing in 2012, being back on Honda, and with all the support we have, I believe together we can reach a new level in the sport.”

The new season starts with the AMA Supercross Series, January 7th, 2012, at Angel Stadium in Anaheim California. The Supercross Series runs 17 races across the USA, and then the AMA Motocross season starts their 12 event series in late May.

Combine the expertise of Brooks, McGrath, and Short, with the solid support and resources of Honda and Supercross.com, it looks like the new Supercross.com / Honda racing team is poised to elevate the sport of supercross and motocross to new levels.
