Team Honda Muscle Milk ready for 2013

4 01 2013

TORRANCE, CA – January 3, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – With round one of the 2013 Monster Energy AMA Supercross only days away, Team Honda Muscle Milk is ready to take on the competition.

Honda has been at the forefront of American Motocross and Supercross action since the beginning, winning its first AMA 250 National Championship in 1973 and amassing an unparalleled race record over the past 40 years, and that winning tradition looks to roll into 2013 as well with champions Trey Canard and Justin Barcia ready for action.

For 2013, Canard and Barcia will compete on Honda’s all-new 2013 CRF450R in the AMA Supercross and AMA Motocross series. The 2013 CRF450R made its debut during the off-season at the Monster Energy Cup, where Barcia won the event overall. Since then, the team has continued to develop the CRF450R in the hands of Canard, Barcia and Jeremy McGrath, who also provided valuable input during hundreds of testing laps during the off season.

After an exciting 2012 season, Muscle Milk is eager to continue their partnership with American Honda in 2013. “We’re extremely proud to be partnered again with Honda Racing. They have a great tradition in racing, a strong commitment to winning, and we both share a common goal of making the highest quality products for consumers,” says CytoSport’s SVP of marketing, John Peirano. “The 2012 season was a great opening year for us as the title sponsor of Team Honda Muscle Milk. We are even more excited about the 2013 season with riders Trey Canard and Justin Barcia leading the way. Both riders embody what a Muscle Milk athlete represents with their determination and commitment to be the best.”

Team Honda Muscle Milk also had some changes during the off season.  First, Mike Tomlin moved from GEICO Honda to the Team Honda Muscle Milk factory team to continue wrenching for Barcia. Three-time WMX champion, Ashley Fiolek, announced she would retire from racing the WMX series. During her four years as a Team Honda factory racer, Ashley consistently demonstrated a professional approach to racing and reflected a racing spirit that is at the core of the Honda brand.

Two more changes to the team effort this year include the addition of Replay cameras and Honda Racing HPD as team sponsors. They join returning sponsors Troy Lee Designs, Pro Honda Oils and Chemicals, Dunlop, Showa, Renthal, D.I.D, VP Racing Fuels, Twin Air, Yoshimura, Hinson Racing and Throttle Jockey.

About the Riders

Canard returns to the team in 2013 for the third year in a row. Since his professional debut in 2007, Canard has become a fan favorite with his humble personality, fierce competitive attitude and undeniable talent. In the 2010 AMA Motocross Lites series, young Canard rode to his first-ever outdoor championship, adding to his long list of accomplishments, which includes a 2008 Supercross Lites East title. After his devastating accident last February that led to a long recovery, Canard believes 2013 is all about new beginnings, and he is confident in his ability to win races.

Barcia enters the 2013 season as the newcomer to the premier class. However, he is nothing new to winning—or to Honda. After making an impressive professional debut in 2009, the young phenomenon has continued to top the podium in both Supercross and Motocross races around the country. In the 2011 AMA Supercross season, Barcia appeared on the podium at every round of the nine-race series and was able to clinch his first Lites East Championship title on his GEICO Honda CRF250R. During the 2011 outdoor Motocross season, he was given the opportunity to ride the last four rounds aboard a factory CRF450R. He showed that he could run up front with the fastest riders in the series by taking third place overall at both Unadilla and Pala, and grabbing a moto win at Southwick. Barcia’s 2012 season proved just as successful as he earned five race wins, maintaining his points lead throughout the entire Supercross Lites season and wrapping up his second Lites East Championship on the GEICO Honda team with one round remaining. He ended his 2012 season by winning the Monster Energy Cup, beating the best 450 racers in the country. His agenda for 2013 is simple: Get out front, get on the podium and win races.

Team Honda Muscle Milk would like to invite fans to stop by for an autograph in the Supercross paddock and to keep an eye on Barcia and Canard on the racetrack. They’ll be the easy to spot: Just look at the front of the pack.

Renthal Riders Sweep Motocross Series Championships

12 09 2012

VALENCIA, CA – September 12, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – At the final round of the AMA Pro Motocross championship in Lake Elsinore, CA, Renthal riders Blake Baggett and Ashley Fiolek clinched the final titles of the year making it a clean sweep for Renthal in 2012.

Ryan Dungey was clearly the deserving champion in the 450 class after clinching the title 2 rounds early at Unadilla. More impressive is the fact that he didn’t just cruise in the final two rounds, but took the overalls with four convincing moto wins to finish out the season.

In the 250 class there was more drama as the title would be decided at the final round in Lake Elsinore, CA. With a shrinking lead in the series, Blake Baggett went out and did what he needed to do winning the first moto and almost assuredly the title. In the second moto, the heat, literally and figuratively was on as temps neared 100 degrees and Blake Baggett once again proved he was the man to beat with a 2nd place, earning him the overall for the day.

In the WMX series, Ashley Fiolek was still battling back into points contention from her horrific crash at the Thunder Valley, CO round back in June. With 2-3 moto finishes at the Lake Elsinore round, she was able to make up the points deficit and earn her 4th WMX title.

Renthal is a proud supporter of handlebars, grips, and sprockets to the Red Bull KTM team, the Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki team and the Honda Muscle Milk Racing team. We congratulate all three teams for bringing home the titles for us this year.

Titles Are Up for Grabs as Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship Hosts 2012 Season Finale from Lake Elsinore on Saturday

4 09 2012

250 Class and Women’s Motocross Championship Crowns Still Undecided

MORGANTOWN, WV – September 4, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Following 11 rounds of grueling competition on the most challenging and demanding tracks in the country, the 2012 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, will come to a dramatic conclusion on Saturday with the inaugural Red Bull Lake Elsinore National.

The series’ highly-anticipated return to Southern California is signified by the introduction a new home for the Nationals in the heart of the motocross industry. After months of hard work in preparing a layout worthy of challenging the world’s best riders, while also serving as a premier venue for spectator viewing, Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park’s unveiling will ultimately decide which riders will walk away as champion in both the 250 Class and Women’s Motocross Championship (WMX Class). Although the 450 Class title has already been decided, there is still plenty on the line in the search to become the first winner at the brand new Lake Elsinore facility.

at Lake Elsinore on Saturday.

Last weekend at Steel City, Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey refused to hold back despite capturing his second 450 Class title at the previous round. In two attempts, the newly-crowned champion had never won at the track in the premier class prior to this season. On Saturday, he left little doubt that his motivation to win is as strong as ever, sweeping the motos for the seventh time this season and extending his impressive win streak to nine races.

With one round remaining, Dungey has the opportunity to match the win total from his record-setting rookie season in 2010 when he won his first premier class title. With each respective win this season, Dungey makes history for KTM, which had never captured an overall win in the 450 Class prior to this summer. Additionally, Dungey has not finished worse than third in a single moto this season and has already surpassed the statistical marks he set in 2010 for laps led, average start, and average finish, and needs just 13 points on Saturday to match his total from that season, making his 2012 campaign one of the most statistically dominant in history.

Several riders will be looking to end Dungey’s reign atop the podium, led by MotoConcepts Suzuki’s Mike Alessi, who has secured the runner-up spot in the championship and returns to his native Southern California. Additionally, perennial front-runners like Chaparral Honda’s Andrew Short and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer will be in search of their first career motocross victories as they also do battle for the third and final spot on the championship podium.

Currently in the midst of a nine-race winning streak, Ryan Dungey will look to equal the number of victories from his title-winning 2010 season.

After a parity-driven season that has witnessed four different overall winners through 11 rounds, the 250 Class title fight will come down to the final pair of motos of the 2012 season. Currently, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett has possession of the points lead, and has since the opening round of the season. However, a strong charge in recent weeks by GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac has brought the pair to within 14 points of one another, with fellow GEICO Honda rider Justin Barcia just 18 points back. Factor in Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen, who sits 45 points out of the lead, and four riders enter Lake Elsinore with a shot at their first career national title.

Last weekend at Steel City, Tomac put forth one of the most dominant efforts of the season, sweeping the motos to claim his fourth victory of the season and equal the class-leading win total he now shares with Baggett. Tomac has arguably more momentum than anyone heading into Saturday’s race, but all four contenders enter Lake Elsinore on an even playing field, having never raced on the track before.

Baggett hopes a return to his native Southern California can provide an edge, having missed out on the podium for the past two rounds. In that span, Baggett has lost 18 points to Tomac, who has surged from third to second in the standings. Barcia’s consistency, in addition to his pair of victories this season, has kept him in the thick of the title fight all season long, while Roczen’s distinction of being the best starter in the 250 Class has made him a fixture at the front of the field, despite having yet to win a race in his first season of competition on U.S. soil.

Eli Tomac has made up 18 points on Blake Baggett over the last two rounds and is within striking distance of the 250 Class points lead.

Through the first seven rounds of its eight-race championship, the WMX Class has provided arguably the most captivating competition of the summer. Rockstar Energy Racing Suzuki’s Jessica Patterson has controlled the point standings since the opening round, but following a season filled with both great racing and dramatic storylines, three women enter Lake Elsinore with an opportunity to claim the championship.

Sitting just five points behind Patterson is longtime rival Ashley Fiolek, whose class-leading four victories for Team Honda Muscle Milk have put her in position to repeat as champion, despite missing the fourth round of competition due to injury. An additional five points back is Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda’s Tarah Gieger, who has yet to win this season, but has been arguably the most consistent of the three.

Patterson has battled through a broken hand since the halfway point of the season, not missing a single round of action but losing valuable points to her rivals with finishes outside the top 10. As a result, Patterson has the worst finishing average of the trio, but with nearly a month passed since the WMX Class was in action, she and her rivals enter Lake Elsinore refreshed and ready to lay it all on the line.

The WMX Championship will come to a dramatic conclusion on Saturday with Fiolek (1), Patterson (2), and Gieger (3) all gunning for the title.
(Courtesy Carl Stone)

In addition to the competition for the 450 Class victory and respective 250 and WMX Class championships, the final round for the season-long Oakley Bomb Award program will also come to an exciting conclusion. The Oakley Bomb Award is awarded to the rider who posts the fastest lap in practice for both the 450 and 250 Classes. At season’s end, the rider with the most awards will be presented with an Elite Oakley Time Bomb II Swiss Automatic Watch. With five fast laps this season, Tomac has already secured the coveted watch for the 250 Class. However, the 450 Class is still up for grabs with both Dungey and Team Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart tied with four awards apiece. With Stewart out of action due to injury, Dungey will look to claim the watch on Saturday.

Located in the hotbed of the motocross industry, and about an hour outside of the major metropolitan areas of Los Angeles and San Diego, Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park serves as an ideal location for fans of the sport across the entire southern portion of the state. It’s also well known to students of the sport’s history as the site of the Lake Elsinore Grand Prix, which was featured prominently in the epic motorcycle racing documentary film On Any Sunday back in 1971 – one year before the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship was born.

The Marc Peters-designed venue is state-of-the-art in terms of motocross and features multiple elevation changes, spectacular obstacles, and easy access for the fans. The facility was designed with not only riders but spectators in mind as well, with paved roads and walkways, lush landscaping, camping amenities and designated areas at multiple elevations for viewing.

The season-ending Red Bull Lake Elsinore National will feature live broadcast coverage of the opening motos of both the 450 and 250 Classes on FUEL TV, beginning at 4 p.m. Eastern, while also streaming live online at AlliSports.com. Same-day final moto coverage of both classes can be seen on NBC Sports Network, beginning at 11 p.m. Eastern.

Dungey Makes a Pit Stop to Secure Seventh Straight Victory

11 08 2012

Baggett Returns to Top of 250 Class Podium with Fourth Win

SOUTHWICK, MA – August 11, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, made its annual stop in New England on Saturday, hosting the ninth round of the season from Moto-X 338. Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., continued his dominance in the 450 Class, capturing his seventh consecutive win, but needed a pit stop in order to do so. In the 250 Class, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett, of Grand Terrace, Calif., raced to his fourth victory of the summer, extending his lead in the championship.

MotoConcepts Suzuki’s Mike Alessi, of Victorville, Calif., grabbed the holeshot in the opening 450 Class moto, while Dungey quickly worked his way forward from a third-place start. The points leader paced his main championship rival for five laps before making a pass for the lead and pulling away for the moto win.

In Moto 2, Dungey once again found himself slotted behind Alessi, who captured the holeshot. This time, Dungey wasted no time taking over the top spot, crossing the line at the front of the field at the conclusion of the opening lap. After opening up a multi-second lead, Dungey tipped over on Lap 6, losing the lead to Alessi.

Just two laps later, Dungey passed Alessi again and eventually extended his advantage to over 10 seconds. Over the course of those laps, Dungey’s KTM team became aware that fuel had spilled from his gas tank in the earlier fall and for fear of running empty, determined Dungey would need to pull into the mechanic’s area to replenish the tank.

On Lap 13, Dungey pulled off the track to receive fuel, holding a 13-second advantage. After a quick exchange, he was back running, but had fallen to second behind Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Tyla Rattray, of South Africa, who passed Alessi just one lap prior. Dungey stayed close to Rattray for the final four laps, but was unable to pass him for the moto win. Nevertheless, by virtue of his 1-2 finish, Dungey claimed the overall win.

“I got a little bit of a lead and felt like I was in a groove,” explained Dungey. “Coming to the finish, my rear stepped to the right, hooked the jump, and made me cross rut. I tried to save it, but it took me right down. When I fell, I think I kicked the gas cap off. I got back into the lead, but I kept worrying if I had enough left.

“The TV footage allowed our guys to see what happened, which helped them decide to bring me in, which worked out because I wouldn’t have made another lap. I tried to catch (Tyla Rattray), but he’s a great sand rider. I’m bummed I made a mistake, but given the situation, things couldn’t have worked out better.”

Alessi’s 2-3 finishes landed him second overall, while Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Broc Tickle finished third (6-4) for his second career podium result.

Dungey’s lead in the 450 Class standings now sits at 85 points over Alessi, giving him the potential to capture the title at the next round.

In the 250 Class, GEICO Honda’s Zach Bell, of Cairo, Ga., turned heads in his professional debut by grabbing the opening moto holeshot and pulling away for an early lead. The 17-year-old rider paced the field for five laps before yielding to his teammate Eli Tomac, of Cortez, Colo., on Lap 6. Bell crashed moments later, while Tomac never looked back, winning by over 12 seconds.

In Moto 2, Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen, of Germany, made quick work of early leader, and Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda rider, Jessy Nelson, of Paso Robles, Calif., and asserted himself out front. Behind him, Baggett positioned himself into second and began his pursuit of the lead, setting the stage for a moto-long battle between the familiar foes.

After leading for nearly the entire moto, Roczen came under fire from Baggett on Lap 15, with the Kawasaki rider making a tough pass, only to be passed again by Roczen just a few turns later. Then Tomac, who had fallen earlier in the race, caught the lead duo and made a quick pass on Baggett, only to crash in the next turn and fall back to third. On the following lap, Baggett made another move on Roczen, making the pass stick and carrying it through to the finish, tying Tomac in points for the day, but securing the second-moto tiebreaker (3-1).

“I got a good start in the second moto and rode the best I could,” said Baggett. “I made a mistake early, but I dug as deep as I could and made it happen. Ken and I went after each other, but we kept it clean. I really enjoyed racing with him.”

Tomac finished second (1-3), while Roczen rounded out the podium in third (4-2). Baggett’s lead in the championship now sits at 24 points over GEICO Honda’s Justin Barcia, of Monroe, N.Y.

The Women’s Motocross Championship hosted its penultimate round on Saturday. Reigning champion Ashley Fiolek, of St. Augustine, Fla., captured her third consecutive victory (1-1) aboard her Team Honda Muscle Milk machine, setting the stage for a dramatic final round battle for the championship. Rockstar Energy Racing Suzuki’s Jessica Patterson, of Tallahassee, Fla., finished second (2-2), while Munn Racing KTM’s Sara Pettersson, of Sweden, finished third (4-4).

Currently, only 10 points separate the top three riders in the standings, with Patterson holding a five-point lead over Fiolek. Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda’s Tarah Gieger, of Puerto Rico, sits an additional five points behind in third.

The 2012 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship travels to New Berlin, N.Y., next weekend for the 10th round of the season. The Red Bull Unadilla National commences next Saturday, August 18, beginning at 1 p.m. Eastern.

Dungey Continues Dominance with Fourth Consecutive Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship Victory at RedBud

8 07 2012

Points Leader Baggett Makes it Two-in-a-Row in 250 Class

BUCHANAN, MI – July 7, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Thousands of avid motocross fans braved the heat on Saturday to cheer on the world’s best motocross riders as legendary RedBud USA hosted the sixth round of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing. As the season reached its halfway point, Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., kept his dominant run going in the 450 Class, wining his fourth straight race with another 1-1 moto sweep. In the 250 Class, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett, of Grand Terrace, Calif., raced to his third victory of the season and second in-a-row with an impressive 1-1 effort.

In the opening 450 Class moto, it was Dungey who prevailed out of the gate, establishing himself as the rider to beat early while Team Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., followed in second in his return to action.

As Dungey pushed to open a gap on Stewart, the Suzuki rider went down, allowing Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer, of Rupert, Idaho, and Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Brayton, of Ft. Dodge, Iowa, to move past. On the following lap, Stewart encountered misfortune again, stalling his bike and falling to seventh. He eventually worked his way to a sixth-place result.

Out front, Dungey took the checkered flag by over 45 seconds ahead of the field

In Moto 2, MotoConcepts Suzuki’s Mike Alessi, of Victorville, Calif., grabbed the holeshot and led early, but it didn’t take long for Dungey to take over the top spot and pull away. Alessi, who was involved in a first-turn crash in the first moto, settled into second for the remainder of the moto, while Stewart bounced back to run third.

Dungey’s near 35-second win extended his moto winning streak to eight.

“Having James (Stewart) back this week was good to add another challenge, and it’s good for the sport,” said Dungey. “We made some more changes to the bike coming into (today) and I think we’ve made even more progress. My starts were good and I knew getting out front would make life easier, having a whole track to work with. It’s (too) early to think points, but you’ve got to be smart. With James back, you knew he’d be there, so I didn’t want to downplay him. I just wanted to get a good start and see how things played out.”

Brayton brought home his first overall podium result of the season in second (3-4), while Stewart finished third (3-6) despite his troubles.

Dungey extended his lead in the 450 Class standings to 72 points over Alessi.

In the 250 Class, Baggett needed a pair of come-from-behind performances to take the win. After crossing the line in sixth at the conclusion of the first lap in Moto 1, Baggett began a charge to the front of the field. He quickly picked off riders to move into second by Lap 5 and overcame a five-second deficit to pass GEICO Honda’s Justin Barcia, of Monroe, N.Y., for the lead on Lap 12 and pull away.

In Moto 2, Baggett put himself in a better position, coming out of the gate in third and working his way to the front of the field by the conclusion of the opening lap. On Lap 2, a mistake forced Baggett to fall, allowing Barcia to take over the lead.

After losing just one spot, Baggett once again set his sights on the lead and managed to take over the position again on Lap 8, holding it through to the finish.

“This track is one of the best on the schedule, its got a little bit of everything,” said Baggett. “There’s no formula to the way I ride. It just happens. I had a pitiful start in the first moto and fought my way through the pack. I got a good start in the second moto and just tipped it over. I looked at lines to see where I could pick up ground and I just took a shot (at the lead) when I had a chance.”

Barcia’s pair of second-place finishes landed him second overall, while his teammate Eli Tomac, of Cortez, Colo., finished third (5-3).

Baggett extended his lead in the championship to 19 points over Barcia.

The Women’s Motocross Championship hosted its fifth round of eight for the 2012 season. Defending champion, Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Ashley Fiolek, of St. Augustine, Fla., dominated both motos to claim her second win of the summer. Fiolek missed the WMX Class’ previous round at High Point in June with an injury, but gained valuable points in the championship. Munn Racing KTM’s Sara Pettersson, of Sweden, finished second (3-4), while Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda’s Tarah Gieger, of Puerto Rico, finished third (2-6). Current championship points leader, Jessica Patterson, of Tallahassee, Fla., finished 14th aboard her Rockstar Energy Racing Suzuki after breaking her hand last week, retaining control of the division points lead.

The 2012 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship continues next Saturday, July 14, with round seven from Spring Creek MX Park in Millville, Minn., and the Spring Creek National.

Stewart Holds Off Dungey to Start Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship Season With Back-to-Back Wins

27 05 2012

Tomac Captures Second Career Win in 250 Class

WORTHAM, TX – May 26, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Freestone Raceway was the site of the second round of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, on Saturday with an afternoon full of fiercely-contested competition. Team Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., narrowly swept the day’s motos to claim his second consecutive overall victory in the 450 Class. In the 250 Class, GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac also recorded a pair of moto wins to grab his second career overall victory.

Stewart capitalized on strong starts in the 450 Class, working his way into the lead prior to the conclusion of the opening lap in each moto. Behind him, Red Bull KTM’s Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., asserted himself in both motos, setting his sights on passing Stewart for the lead multiple times.

However, despite being faster than his rival throughout a significant portion of each moto, Dungey was unable to find a way to get past Stewart. The duo was separated by mere bike lengths throughout the combined 34 laps of racing across both motos, but the lead position never changed hands. Regardless, the two former champions provided captivating competition that kept the fans cheering all afternoon long.

“I thought my day went good,” said Stewart, who’s 18th-career win ties him for fourth on the all-time wins list. “It was a tough one, but fun. I got two good starts, made quick passes, and set the tone with a good pace. Ryan rode really well, but I did my own (thing) out front. I knew he’d be there the whole time. I felt like we were even today and if he had gotten out front, he could have done the same thing.”

Dungey’s pair of runner-up finishes landed him second overall, while MotoConcepts Suzuki’s Mike Alessi, of Victorville, Calif., secured his second straight podium result in third (5-3).

“I got off to good starts in both motos,” said Dungey. “I tried to make a pass happen the whole moto, but there was maybe more I should have done. It just didn’t come together. James is a tough competitor and it’s good for the both of us to push each other to new limits.”

Stewart extended his championship lead to 14 points over Dungey.

In the 250 Class, Tomac showed an unmatched pace in both motos. The recently-crowned AMA Supercross Western Regional Champion had not won a Lucas Oil Motocross race since his history-making professional debut during the 2010 season, but on Saturday, he was in a league of his own.

In Moto 1, Tomac was forced to work his way up from a fifth-place start, but he wasted little time in doing so, moving to the lead by Lap 3 and pulling away from the field by over 10 seconds. He put forth a similar effort in Moto 2, overcoming a sixth-place start to take over the top spot by Lap 7 and once again win by over 10 seconds to cap off a dominant afternoon.

“The last two seasons have been roller-coasters to say the least,” said Tomac. “I pretty much ruined my rookie season here (due to the heat), so to come back and get a win is just awesome. I’ve been doing this for three years and every year you learn the tracks and the bikes more, and I feel like everything is working perfectly now. I didn’t get greatest starts today, but I found some good lines and got a good flow all day.”

Last week’s winner, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett, of Grand Terrace, Calif., posted 2-2 moto scores to finish second overall, with Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen, of Germany, finishing third for the second straight weekend (3-4).

“I’m pumped to salvage out a second with poor starts,” said Baggett, who holds a 14-point lead in the championship. “The most important thing is I still have the red plate (for the series points lead). Hopefully I can keep it for the next 10 rounds.”

In the Women’s Motocross Championship, Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Ashley Fiolek, of St. Augustine, Fla., overcame a bout with food poisoning to take her first win of the season with 2-1 moto scores. Last week’s winner, Rockstar Energy Racing Suzuki’s Jessica Patterson, of Tallahassee, Fla., finished second (1-2), while Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Green’s Meghan Rutledge, of Australia, grabbed her first career overall podium in third (3-3).

The 2012 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship continues next week, with round three from Thunder Valley MX Park in Lakewood, Colo., and the Toyota Thunder Valley National on Saturday, June 2.

44th Hangtown Motocross Classic Set to Kick Off Memorable Summer Season

MORGANTOWN, WV – May 15, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Following months of anticipation, this Saturday, May 19, the 2012 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, will commence with the 44th running of the FMF Hangtown Motocross Classic from Prairie City OHV Park in Sacramento, Calif. Crisscrossing the United States, three world-class racing divisions—the 450 Class, 250 Class, and Women’s Motocross Championship (WMX)—will embark on a summer-long battle for the most prestigious championship in motocross.

The Dirt Diggers North Motorcycle Club will make sure the competitors face a challenge when they visit the iconic track, which features plenty of elevation changes, highly technical obstacles, and a bowl-like layout that lends itself to spectacular sightlines from almost any vantage point. As the longest-running event on the schedule, the Hangtown Motocross Classic even precedes what is now known as the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship and boasts a devoted local following.

Hangtown also signifies the start of the 2012 broadcast package with NBC Sports and FUEL TV. Opening motos will be showcased live on FUEL TV and AlliSports.com beginning at 4 p.m. EST, while same-day coverage of the second motos can be seen on NBC Sports Network at 12:30 a.m. EST.
On an international level, the second motos of Lucas Oil Motocross will be simulcast throughout the globe, with over 24 hours of live racing showcased on SPEED Australia, ESPN Brazil, and ESPN Latin America. This will bring the most prestigious championship on the planet to over 40 million homes across those continents.

Additionally, 15 hours of post-produced highlight shows will be distributed to Extreme Sports Channel in Europe and the Middle East, Germany’s SPORT1, South Africa’s SuperSport, along with SPEED Australia, ESPN Brazil, and ESPN Latin America. This will expand the reach of the Nationals to over 65 million homes.

For more information about dates and times of these broadcasts, contact local satellite or cable providers.

450 Class

Reigning 450 Class Champion Ryan Villopoto will miss the entire 2012 season following an injury suffered prior to the start of the championship. In the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider’s absence, several contenders are prepared to step up.

Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey enjoyed the most successful rookie season of all time in 2010 en route to that championship. For his first season aboard a KTM, he wants to give the Austrian brand its first American title. Alongside Dungey is the newest member of Team Yoshimura Suzuki, James Stewart, the 2008 champion who has not competed full-time in Lucas Oil Motocross since his perfect season four years ago. Stewart’s highly publicized move from Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX to Suzuki will be a major storyline throughout the season.

Other riders to watch include Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX’s Davi Millsaps, Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Brayton and Tommy Hahn, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer and Tyla Rattray, Team Yoshimura Suzuki’s Brett Metcalfe, MotoConcepts Suzuki’s Mike Alessi, Chaparral Honda’s Andrew Short, and Jeff Ward Racing Kawasaki’s Josh Grant and Kyle Chisholm. Each knows what it takes to win at the sport’s highest level and will be battling alongside Dungey and Stewart all season long.

250 Class

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson achieved his lifelong dream of becoming a national champion last season, and now he’s back to continue his reign atop the 250 Class, home to the sport’s rising stars. As the first rider to defend his 250 Class title since the 2008 season, Wilson will meet a bevy of challengers prepared to make their own marks on the sport.

Wilson’s Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki teammate Blake Baggett might be the biggest threat to his title defense. Baggett showed tremendous speed and ability on his way to a series-leading five wins last season. Red Bull KTM teammates Marvin Musquin and Ken Roczen have championship experience of their own, having split the last three World Motocross MX2 titles. They’ve now made the move to the States to compete alongside the world’s best in Lucas Oil Motocross.

GEICO Honda duo Justin Barcia and Eli Tomac got off to a successful start in 2012 AMA Supercross competition and will look to carry that momentum to the Nationals. With veteran riders like Star/Valli Yamaha’s Kyle Cunningham, along with Rockstar Energy Racing Suzuki’s Martin Davalos and Blake Wharton, the 250 Class is loaded with talented competitors.

WMX Class

Over the past four seasons, a captivating rivalry has developed between the two biggest names in the WMX Class. Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Ashley Fiolek and Rockstar Energy Racing Suzuki’s Jessica Patterson have traded wins and championships, establishing themselves as the premier female motocross riders on the planet and helping bring the WMX Class to the national spotlight.

Fiolek enters the 2012 season as the defending champion, having claimed her third title in four years, but Patterson is back with a new team and a renewed passion to reclaim the title she last won in 2010. Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda’s Tarah Gieger will challenge every step of the way, as will the exceptionally fast Mariana Balbi, Jacqueline Strong, and Vicki Golden. Fiolek’s new Team Honda Muscle Milk teammate Sayaka Kaneshiro will look to make the most of her new opportunity as well.
