Manheim’s Simulcast Celebrates a Decade of Innovation and Business Success

11 07 2012

Product line continues to transform automotive remarketing industry by expanding dealers’ virtual reach anytime and anywhere

ATLANTA, GA – July 9, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Manheim is officially recognizing the ten-year anniversary of its popular Simulcast product line. Simulcast revolutionized the remarketing industry when it became the first product of its kind to give dealers the freedom to virtually attend live auctions across the United States. Since Simulcast’s release, Manheim has continued to evolve the product, adding new features and capabilities in response to market demands and customer needs.

“First, we’d like to thank all of our customers who use Manheim Simulcast and who have made it an industry-leading product for so many years,” said Joe George, senior vice president of product development, Manheim. “Our customers’ needs inspire our technological innovations and drive us to continually develop solutions like Simulcast that make it easier and easier for them to do business.”

Since its inception in 2002, Simulcast has steadily reshaped the automotive remarketing industry.  In 2003, one year after its launch, Simulcast accounted for less than 1 percent of Manheim’s sales. Today, it accounts for roughly 16 percent. On average, about 13,000 dealerships attend Simulcast sales every week. Within the past twelve months, around 36 percent of all Manheim buyers – or 48 percent of buyers who purchased 10 or more vehicles – have used Simulcast. Over the same period of time, Simulcast was used by 40 percent of all dealer sellers and 76 percent of dealer sellers who sold 10 or more cars. Additionally, nearly all commercial sellers use Simulcast. To date, some 4 million cars have been sold through Simulcast, with a total sales price of nearly $60 billion.

Manheim’s Simulcast represents a classic American business success story where savvy business leaders identified a gap in the marketplace and filled it. Before Simulcast, dealers seeking inventory had to physically travel to auction locations, often in different parts of the country. These travels incurred expenses and at the same time pulled dealers away from day-to-day operations at their dealerships. Simulcast used state-of-the-art technology to solve both problems.

Simulcast also transformed the marketplace by expanding it from a local to a national level by leveraging the supply and demand of vehicles nationally. In addition, Simulcast brought more buyers to the lanes. Soon dealers began to see the many benefits of attending live auctions virtually, and Simulcast has forever changed the way they conduct business, making the product a win for Manheim and the remarketing industry.

Continuing the tradition of innovation, Manheim has recently launched Simulcast Everywhere, the latest addition to the Simulcast product line. Introduced to the industry in February of this year, Simulcast Everywhere enables dealers to sell vehicles directly from their lots, eliminating the need to physically transport vehicles to an auction location for sale. This means that the sellers, buyers and vehicles can be anywhere, and the sale is entirely virtual. Simulcast Everywhere is just another example of Manheim’s long history of developing products that help customers buy, sell and manage their inventory anytime, anywhere and in any way they choose.

To commemorate Simulcast’s tenth anniversary and to celebrate Manheim’s commitment to serving dealers in the U.S. and around the world, Manheim is giving away a classic American muscle car from General Motors. One lucky dealer who purchases a car through Simulcast during the month of July will win a 2001 Chevrolet Corvette Z06, the same model as the first vehicle ever sold on Simulcast. Additionally, one random Simulcast user will win an iPad each week in July.

Manheim Unveils Solar Installations at Two Auction Locations to Generate Renewable Energy

20 06 2012

Solar Installations Part of National Cox Conserves Program

ATLANTA, GA – June 19, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) -  Manheim announced today the completion of photovoltaic solar installations at two of its auto auctions, Manheim Baltimore-Washington and Manheim Nashville to produce clean energy and reduce carbon emissions.

“Manheim is committed to supporting conservation initiatives at all of our locations,” said David Munnikhuysen, Manheim’s vice president of operational analytics. “Improving and sustaining the environment ensures that we are good stewards for our communities and our business.”

The Manheim Baltimore-Washington installation produces nearly 170kW of clean energy, and the Manheim Nashville project generates 200kW of renewable energy. Combined, the two installations generate enough energy to power the equivalent of 41 average-sized homes and prevent more than 285 tons of carbon from entering the environment. These installations join completed solar projects at Manheim Georgia, Manheim New Jersey, Manheim Phoenix and Manheim Portland.

Across Manheim, many locations have completed energy conservation projects with their lighting and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, as well as participate in the water conservation initiatives. Through its two Water Conservation Centers, Manheim saves 10 million gallon of water each year.

Manheim also switched from solvent to water-based paint at 16 locations, reducing the greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent at each of the participating locations. Manheim’s paint mix management process has also reduced 36 tons of carbon.

Manheim is a subsidiary of Cox Enterprises and participates in Cox Conserves, the company’s national sustainability program.

“Manheim plays an important role in our Cox Conserves program,” said Keith Mask, Cox Enterprises’ assistant vice president of energy and engineering. “Cox Conserves was created five years ago, and since that time, Manheim has really led the way for our company with water conservation. They are also identifying opportunities, such as this solar installation, to reduce carbon. These projects provide cleaner air for our communities and help preserve valuable natural resources.”

Across the nation, Cox is producing more than 5,000 kW of clean energy through its solar and fuel cell projects. Combined, these renewable energy projects are preventing more than 17,600 tons of carbon from entering the environment.

About Cox Conserves

Launched in 2007, Cox Conserves seeks to reduce Cox Enterprises’ energy consumption by embracing renewable forms of energy, conserving natural resources and inspiring eco-friendly behavior. The program engages each of the company’s major subsidiaries (Cox Communications, Manheim, AutoTrader.com and Cox Media Group) and encourages Cox Enterprises’ 50,000 employees and their families to engage in eco-friendly practices. Oldest-Known U.S.-Made Motorcycle Heads to Auction Block

13 04 2012

FREDERICK, MD – April 13, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – After hanging on a dentist’s wall for 30 years and then being stowed in a garage and then a basement, a 1903 Indian motorcycle will have a new owner. On Saturday, April 21 at the Frederick County Fairgrounds bidders from around the world will compete to own a piece of two-wheeled history from Charlie Alder, Jr.’s estate.

“This motorcycle predates the Harley – the bike most Americans associate with homegrown motorcycles,” explained Steve Rinker, who runs Buck’s Indian, an Indian motorcycle restoration firm in Romney, WV. Rinker added, “The handful of 1902 Indian models that were built were deconstructed, their parts used to build the 1.75-horsepower 1903 models. And as far as we know, this is the only unrestored 1903 still in existence.”

“What makes this bike particularly intriguing is that it’s never been restored. Except for a few nuts and bolts used for early repairs, this bike is all original,” added Josh Ruby, the auctioneer entrusted with selling the motorcycle for the Alder estate. “And I do mean ‘bike.’ This is one of the most primitive motorized vehicles you’ll ever see – a real peek into what innovation looked like over a hundred years ago.”

The motorcycle has already travelled more miles in 2012 than it has cumulatively in the last 90 years – albeit in the back of a van. “It was a hit at Daytona [Bike Week],” said Rinker, who has been storing the bike at his private museum of antique motorcycles until it makes its trip to the auction in Western Maryland.

Multiple pre-1930 Indian and Harley Davidson motorcycles – and even a side car – will accompany the 1903 model on the auction block. While those models have some limited sale comparables, Ruby admits he doesn’t know what to expect as far as number of bidders or sale price for the 1903. “This motorcycle hasn’t been sold since the 1950′s. The last time it changed hands outside of the family was during a barter for $50 of construction work by Charlie’s dad – before the bike was considered to have collectable value. So, it will be exciting for all of us, as those bids come in.”

The auction will also include 1940′s automobiles, World War II memorabilia, and antique railroad items – over 900 lots of collectible antiques in all. Online bidding is available via http://www.proxibid.com. Print-resolution pictures of the 1903 Indian and other bikes, as well as a scan of a 1903 Indian motorcycle owner’s manual, are available upon request. Josh Ruby is available for interview at (301) 748-2924 or josh@wolfeauctions.com, and Steve Rinker is available for interview at (304) 822-7581 or rinkerindian@frontiernet.net.  Descriptions of each motorcycle are available at http://www.wolfeauctions.com.

The Right Rider Access Fund is a charitable, community benefit organization created in 2011 to directly support off-highway vehicle enthusiasts by supplementing the work of the Motorcycle Industry Council, the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America, and the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association, as well as through other means. The fund’s charitable mission is to promote the safe and responsible use of off-highway vehicles and to preserve their access to appropriate lands. RRAF develops its own initiatives and provides grants to others, such as NOHVCC. Visit the RRAF at www.riderfund.org

The Motorcycle Industry Council exists to preserve, protect and promote motorcycling through government relations, communications and media relations, statistics and research, aftermarket programs, development of data communications standards, and activities surrounding technical and regulatory issues. As a not-for-profit, national industry association, the MIC seeks to support motorcyclists by representing manufacturers and distributors of motorcycles, scooters, motorcycle/ATV/ROV parts and accessories, and members of allied trades such as insurance, finance and investment companies, media companies and consultants.

The MIC is headquartered in Irvine, Calif., with a government relations office in metropolitan Washington, D.C. First called the MIC in 1970, the organization has been in operation since 1914. Visit the MIC at www.mic.org.
