Record 1,300 People Assembled at BRP’s Can-Am Spyder Owners Event in North Carolina

19 06 2013

The largest BRP-sponsored Spyder gathering since its launch 6 years ago

VALCOURT, QUEBEC – June 18, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – BRP hosted nearly 850 Can‑Am Spyder roadsters and more than 1,300 people this past weekend at the largest BRP-sponsored gathering of Can-Am Spyder roadsters ever assembled during the sixth annual North American Can-Am Spyder Owners Event in Maggie Valley, N.C.

“This was the largest Can-Am Spyder Owners Event since we launched the vehicle in the winter of 2007,” said Yves Leduc, vice-president and general manager, North America division. “The presence of so many passionate Spyder owners illustrates the health of the brand and the growing nature of our rider community.”

Friday, BRP announced the winners of the customization contest and European Spyder vacation experience. Danny Webb of Lawton, Oklahoma with his hand-painted customized Spyder ST was named best-in show by a panel of BRP judges.

By far, the big winner of the night was Susette Hieronymus of South Carolina, who, out of all eligible participants at the event, was randomly chosen to win an all-expenses paid trip for two to one of the 2014 European Can-Am Roadster Owners Events to be held next summer.

“BRP’s Can-Am Spyder Owners Event continues to grow year after year,” Leduc added, “and with more regional Spyder events popping up in North America and around the world, people are discovering the accessibility to the open road the Spyder delivers.”

Participants were treated to meals and entertainment during the two-day celebration of the three-wheeled vehicle that has reinvented the way people take to the open road. There were also demo rides of the new 2013 line-up, including the all-new Spyder ST that is designed for sport touring – perfect for the beautiful back roads of the picturesque Smoky Mountains.

The North American Can-Am Spyder Owners Event also raised US$2,500 to benefit the Haywood Christian Ministry, a local organization that helps between 700 and 800 families a month.

Revenues for the first quarter ended April 30, 2013 were $804.3 million, an increase of 5.5% or $41.6M compared to Q1 of FY13. Revenues increased by 12% when excluding the impact of the exit of the sport boat business in the fall 2012. The increase in revenues includes a favourable foreign exchange rate variation of $13 million mainly related to the strengthening of the U.S. dollar against the Canadian dollar. The Company’s revenues are derived from the sales of its Seasonal Products (Ski-Doo and Lynx snowmobiles and Sea-Doo watercraft), Year-Round Products (Can-Am all-terrain (ATV) and side-by-side vehicles (SSV) and Spyder), its Propulsion Systems (Rotax engines and Evinrude outboard engines) and related Parts, Accessories and Clothing (PAC).

Seasonal Products

Revenues for Seasonal Products decreased by $46.9 million, or 18.5%, to $206.7 million for the first quarter ended April 30, 2013, compared with $253.6 million for the corresponding period last year. The decrease in revenues is attributable to the reduction of $44 million of revenues following the Company’s decision announced in the fall of 2012 to exit the sport boat business.

Year-Round Products

Revenues for Year-Round Products increased by $87.0 million, or 27.4%, to $404.7 million for the first quarter ended April 30, 2013, up from $317.7 million for the corresponding period last year. The increase is primarily due to the introduction of new models such as the Can-Am Spyder ST and the Maverick side-by-side vehicle.

Propulsion Systems

Revenues for Propulsion Systems remained stable at $92.9 million for the first quarter ended April 30, 2013, compared with $93.1 million for the corresponding period last year despite the cold weather during the spring in North America which impacted our sales of outboard engines.

PAC (Parts, Accessories & Clothing)

Revenues for PAC increased by $1.7 million, or 1.7%, up to $100.0 million for the first quarter ended April 30, 2013, up from $98.3 million for the corresponding period last year.

The gross profit margin decreased by 70 basis points primarily due to additional manufacturing costs in Year-Round Products in order to increase production flexibility to better respond to market demand and to additional expenses supporting the watercraft transfer to the Querétaro, Mexico facility.

Operating expenses increased by $8.9 million, or 7.2%, to $131.9 million for the first quarter ended April 30, 2013, up from $123.0 million for the corresponding period last year. The increase was primarily due to higher advertising expenses in all product categories, higher stock-based compensation in relation to the initial public offering of the Company and higher investments in research and development projects.

Normalized net income increased by $3.8 million, or 7.7% to $53.4 million for the first quarter ended April 30, 2013 compared with $49.6 million for the corresponding period last year.

“Our 30-year story is inspired and driven by performance and passion,” said Gerd Ohrnberger, vice-president and general manager of BRP’s Product Engineering and Manufacturing Operations division.”The development of innovative technologies that offer unique performances is the result.”

Rotax engines have made history as the centrepieces of legendary powersports vehicles and set new standards with their high energy efficiency and low emission. These are the engines that are used at the international Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals, a BRP-operated kart racing event in which drivers aged 13 years and older compete and gain racing experience. The Rotax engines that have moved the powersports world for three decades continue to combine emotion and performance in a historically unique way.

With over 75,000 Rotax MAX engines sold over a 15-year period, BRP is a global market leader in the kart sports market. The Rotax MAX Challenge is the biggest and fastest growing kart racing series in the world today with over 15,000 active drivers and running in more than 50 countries.

About BRP

BRP is a global leader in the design, development, manufacturing, distribution and marketing of powersports vehicles. Backgrounder: Karting at BRP

The evolution of the kart industry at BRP took off in Austria in the 1980s with the production of the first high performance Rotax100 cc kart racing engine. BRP’s expertise in the development of 2-stroke high performance engines lead the Rotax engines to dominate the kart sports market and bring home the gold in the national and international championships of the Commission internationale de karting (CIK).

At the Karting World Championship of 1988, Rotax engines seized nine of the top ten positions. Several of today’s most successful F1 drivers began their racing careers in karts powered by Rotax kart engines, including Kimi Räikkönen (Lotus), Jenson Button (McLaren), Giorgio Pantano, Anthony Davidson and Robert Kubica. New in the Formula 1 racing circuit this year is Esteban Gutierrez (Sauber), who until recently participated in Rotax MAX Challenge races.

In 1997, the Rotax 125 MAX kart engine was introduced, setting new standards with its reliability and user friendliness and standing out from the competition thanks to its lower fuel emissions. In 2000, the first conversion kits came onto the market, allowing kart drivers to buy one engine that could be easily adapted to suit their ability throughout their racing career. The engine’s price made karting accessible to a wider audience of hobby drivers.

In 2002, in line with its commitment to innovating low maintenance yet ground-breaking products, BRP launched the 125 MAX DD2 engine: a direct drive (no chain) engine in combination with a two-speed-gearbox (operated by means of shift paddles on the steering wheel).

Despite these exciting developments, the Karting World Championship did not make room for the 125 cc MAX engine next to the 100 cc category. So, in 1999, BRP launched a racing series with its own technology and sports regulations. In 2000, the first Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals were battled out on the track.

THE ROTAX MAX CHALLENGE GRAND FINALS

Debuting in 1999 as a “playground” for ambitious leisure kart drivers, the RotaxMAX Challenge (RMC) is now the most prestigious event in the world of professional karting. An annual highlight of the racing season, the Grand Finals bring together drivers from all over the globe to crown the best amongst them. As part of the Rotax MAX Challenge, the Grand Finals have grown every year since they began.

Let’s take a look back in history …

The first edition of the Grand Finals took place in 2000 on the island of Puerto Rico with 66 drivers in the “125 MAX” class representing 19 countries. In 2001, the finalists were invited to Malaysia where 68 drivers from 29 countries competed for the RMC “World Champion” title in the “125 MAX” class. In 2002, kart drivers from 33 different countries vied for the gold at the Grand Finals in South Africa, and in Egypt in 2003, the “125 Junior MAX” category was introduced.

The year 2003 was also the first time the company worked with a chassis manufacturer to supply comparable karts to competitors. The junior category raced on a ‘single make’ chassis supplied by CRG while the more experienced drivers raced on their private chassis. This move increased the number of Grand Finals participants to almost 100 drivers, representing close to 40 different countries.

The volcano island of Lanzarote, Spain welcomed the 5thGrand Finals in 2004. For the first time, all competitors raced either on supplied ‘single make’ chassis provided by CRG (for the “125 Junior MAX” category) or by BRP (for the “125 MAX” category.) The following year in Malaysia, the 2005 Grand Finals ran three different categories: “125 Junior MAX”; “125 MAX” and the “125 MAX DD2″. The event attracted 140 drivers from 43 nations and a new sponsor, Swiss Hutless from Switzerland, who supplied 55 race-ready chassis for the “125 Junior MAX” category. BRP also unveiled the newly designed MOJO tyres on this international platform.

The rainy coast of Viana do Castelo, Portugal hosted the 2006 edition of the RMC Grand Finals. The event reached a record 186 participants from close to 50 countries. The 2007 edition saw another great event in Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates: 216 drivers from more than 50 countries from all five continents raced for victory in the “125 Junior MAX”, “125 MAX” and “125 MAX DD2″ categories using chassis signed by CRG and INTREPID, two of the most prestigious European chassis manufacturers.

The world’s top karting race series found itself on European soil once again when Italy – arguably the home of karting – hosted the Grand Finals in 2008. Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt hosted the Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals in 2009, marking the event’s 10th anniversary. Chassis were supplied by manufacturers Maranello and CRG and German manufacturer Heidenau supplied MOJO tyres. Partners including Dellorto and Kart Care also contributed to the great success of this event.

In2010 the Grand Finals took place in Italy at the La Conca race circuit. For the first time, the series held 4 different categories and the number of drivers went up to 250. The introduction of the new category – the 125 MAX DD2 MASTERS – allowed for another 36 drivers over the age of 32 to compete in the world’s biggest kart race series. Sodi from France supplied chassis for the “125 Junior MAX” category, while the “125 MAX” and “125 DD2″ used the CRG chassis from Italy. The manufacturer Haase, also from Italy, supplied the “DD2 MASTERS” chassis.

The 2011 Grand Finals took place back in Al Ain, UAE at the Al Ain Raceway circuit. Some 264 drivers from about 60 countries raced in four categories. After a wet experience in 2006 in the north of Portugal, the 2012 Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals moved to the south end of the country to the Kartodromo Internacional Algarve race track near the city of Portimao. The event, again with four categories, increased to an astounding 276 drivers from about 60 countries. Birel supplied the “125 Junior MAX” category, while the “125 MAX” used SODIKART chassis. For the “125 DD2″ category German manufacturer MACH1 supplied the chassis and Haase supplied the “DD2 MASTERS” chassis. www.brp.com

BRP and F1 Grand Prix Du Canada: A Perfect Fit

31 05 2013

VALCOURT, QUEBEC – May 30, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – BRP (TSX:DOO) is making its debut at the Formula One (F1) Grand Prix du Canada on June 7-8-9, 2013 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montréal, Québec. While BRP has, for the third straight year, designed and produced the winning trophies, it will welcome the public at its booth near the Pont du Cosmos. BRP has also loaned 40 Can-Am vehicles to be used by F1 teams and race administration.

“We are very pleased to have BRP as a partner this year,” said François Dumontier, president and CEO of Octane Racing Group Inc., promoter of the Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada. “To have a Québec-based manufacturer and reputed company like BRP exhibit its products and have access to their high end vehicles is certainly a great help.”

BRP will further host all F1 fans at its booth, and provide an opportunity for all to have their photograph taken with the 2013 F1 Grand Prix du Canada 1st place trophy. A display of many of its products will be presented to the general public, and they will have the chance to participate in a contest. BRP will also have a special karting display, including a kart simulator, to highlight the 30th anniversary of Rotax kart engines.

“All F1 pilots started their careers on racing karts. Considering that BRP’s Rotax engines have been powering karts for the past 30 years, many F1 champions, such as Jenson Button and Kimi Räikkönen, participated in the Rotax MAX Challenge,” said José Boisjoli, president and CEO. “Racing goes back a long way at BRP. We started with Ski-Doo and Lynx snowmobile racing, Sea-Doo PWC World Championships, and the Grand National Cross Country series for ATVs and SSVs. It is a logical–and thrilling–step for us to participate in such a premium powersports event.”

Car racing and BRP are closely linked. BRP organizes the annual Rotax MAX Challenge racing series that culminates with the Grand Finals, playing host last year in Portugal to over 275 racers from among 60 countries. The winner of these Grand Finals over the past two years were racing for Canada – Ben Cooper (2012) and Pier-Luc Ouellette (2011) – and they will both be on site during a special karting event on Friday. This year’s Rotax MAX Grand Finals will be in held in New Orleans, Louisiana – the first time in North America.

Forty BRP vehicles will be circulating at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve during race weekend. Three of these, Can-Am Commander side-by-side vehicles, have been on site for three months now helping to prepare the scene for the great race.

BRP in the hands of the Best Drivers of the Formula 1 Grand Prix Du Canada

27 05 2013

VALCOURT, QUEBEC – May 24, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – BRP employees will create the trophies of the 2013 and 2014 editions of the Formula One (F1) Grand Prix du Canada for the third and fourth straight years.

“We are proud of the relationship established with BRP, a powersports industry leader, especially with its Design & Innovation team recognized around the world,” said François Dumontier, President & CEO of Octane Racing Group Inc, promoter of the Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada. “The trophies that they have designed since 2011 for our event demonstrate that they understand well the culture and the emotion behind F1 racing.”

Eight BRP teams of three or four designers participated in a friendly competition to develop the Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada trophies. A jury, composed of representatives from Octane Racing Group and BRP, selected a concept for this year’s edition of the Grand Prix and sent it to Formula One management for final approval. Proposals were evaluated on their originality, design quality, feasibility and symbolism with F1 racing.

“We were very excited in 2011, the first time we were approached by the F1 Grand Prix du Canada to design their trophies, and it is obviously a challenge that is gaining in popularity among my designers,” said Denys Lapointe, executive vice-president, Design & Innovation Centre. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase their creativity, talent and passion for powersports.”

The creation of the trophies was done by a talented group of individuals from a variety of disciplines including: product and transportation design, engineering, human factors, as well as technical staff. Over the years, BRP’s design group has garnered numerous international design awards such as German red dots, U.S. Good Designs and Australia International Design Awards (AIDA). To date in 2013, BRP received one red dot award and three AIDAs.

The trophy will be on display during the F1 Grand Prix du Canada Open House on the morning of June 6. In addition, all spectators at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve will get a chance to see the trophy at the BRP booth located near the Pont du Cosmos on race weekend, June 7-8-9, 2013.
