Rare, Historic Motorcycles to Roar across Auction Block at Dana Point Concours d’Elegance

15 06 2011

Collectible Motorbikes to be sold during 29th Annual Dana Point Concours d’Elegance

DANA POINT, CA – June 14, 2011 – (Motor Sports Newswire) - EG Auctions, a premier collector vehicle auction company, will auction some of the finest examples of vintage motorcycles from the 1900s through the early ‘50s during the 29th Annual Dana Point Concours d’Elegance, on June 24-26. Located at the esteemed St. Regis Monarch Beach in Dana Point, Calif., the Dana Point Vintage Automobile Auction will offer more than 100 collectible, classic vehicles including European sports cars, exotics, hot rods, muscle cars and motorcycles during Southern California’s three-day celebration of automotive elegance.

“The Dana Point Concours d’Elegance is renowned for presenting some of the most breathtaking classic cars and vintage motorcycles in the world,” said David Berg, managing partner of EG Auctions. “To complement the wonderful examples of antique motorcycles slated for display on the Concours North Lawn, we’re going to offer people the opportunity to purchase one also. From a restored, classic Harley Davidson to an early 20th century Indian Twin two-speed, EG Auctions has an eclectic assortment of motorcycles for sale that would be wonderful centerpieces for any collection.”

Of the most interesting motorcycles crossing the auction block is a 1914 Indian Twin two-speed model #88F778 assembled by the Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing Company. Built during the decade when Indian became the largest manufacturer of motorcycles in the world, this is a fine example of a “survivor” bike. With original paint and rims, the fiery red cycle has been stored indoors for years. Even the engine is complete and operates correctly.

No vintage motorcycle auction would be complete without a legendary Harley Davidson bike or two. A beautiful barn find available to the highest bidder is a 1934 Harley Davidson VD with a side car. Found in an industrial building down the road in Orange County, the three-speed bike was registered at the building for more than 35 years and has approximately 44,000 miles on the odometer. The rustic feel of the Harley adds to its allure, with an engine and transmission that would make any enthusiast believe it just rolled off the production line.

“For many collectors, these pre-war Harley Davidsons are the king of the road with their bad boy looks, rumbling exhaust note and smooth handling,” added Berg. “These bikes aren’t just rubber and engine grease; they symbolize a way of life.”

Harley Davidson fans will also be pleased to find some of the first Harleys on the auction docket, including 1905 and 1908 built bikes. The ‘05 is a replica of one of the three Harley Davidson motorcycles made in the first year of production. Today, only two of these bikes can be accounted for in the world. The 1908 Harley is a fine example of an early strap tank, belt drive machine.

From the golden era comes a newly restored 1953 Harley Davidson with rich blue paint and detailed flames down the side. Built as an old school style chopper, it’s powered with a rebuilt original Panhead, and miles of polished chrome. The 21” front tires and 18” rear tires add to the overall driving experience with midrise bars.

For those interested in adding a vintage motorcycle or a collectible car to their collection, the auction preview starts Friday, June 24, at 4 p.m. PDT with the auction scheduled for 7 p.m. Bidders can review the docket, which will be on display starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 25, and Sunday, June 26, with sales to begin at 10 a.m. on both days inside the auction tent.

Dana Point Concours d’Elegance(TM) Announces Artists for the 2010 Art Exhibit

3 06 2010

DANA POINT, CA – June 3, 2010 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The Dana Point Concours d’Elegance™ (www.DanaPointConcours.org) is proud to present a preeminent group of the finest automotive artists in the world who will be presenting their work at the 2010 Art Exhibition on Sunday, June 27 at the St. Regis Resort in Dana Point, CA. The artists who created this sampling of paintings, lithographs and sculptures will generously donate a percentage of all sales to charity. Entrance to the Art Exhibit is included with the purchase of a ticket to the Concours.

The Art Exhibit is Chaired by the Dana Point Concours d’ Elegance Board member Wm A. Motta. Motta’s paintings hang in both private and corporate collections including Alfa Romeo, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Road & Track and Subaru. He has done the poster art for many of the Concours all over the world including Pebble Beach, Dana Point, Amelia Island, Meadow Brook and Villa d’Este on Lake Como in Italy. Motta had a 40 year career at Road & Track and retired as Art Editor. He continues to contribute artwork, and is an independent consultant, for the magazine. As a founding member and Vice President of the Automotive Fine Arts Society, as well as a graduate of the Art Center College of Design, he continues to work with artists around the world to elevate the quality of automotive art and further promote its appreciation.

Another artist that will be featured is Richard Pietruska who has been teaching at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena for over 20 years. He was commissioned to design the 2010 Dana Point Concours d’Elegance Best of Show Trophy along with Wm A. Motta. Although he has worked in a variety of media from paint to tapestries, he focuses his energies on bronze and cast resin sculptures. These sculptures exhibit the dramatic and dynamic, fluid motion of the automobile while simplifying the basic character or design lines of exotic vehicles of the past and the present. His work has been featured in many automotive magazines and he was also commissioned to design the Car of the Year Award for Automobile Magazine.

Other featured Artists that will be presenting are:

Dennis Brown has a passion for the automobile that is expressed in his paintings that are created by using pen and ink outlines, followed by filling in with transparent watercolor or acrylic. Major automobile companies have collected his award-winning works and his luminous acrylics are found in private and public collections around the world. He also is a contributing artist for Road & Track and many other acclaimed publications. Dennis is a member of the Los Angeles Society of Illustrators and The Automotive Fine Arts Society.

Don Derler has produced some commissioned automotive portraits, however his main focus has been the visual excitement that lies within the shapes, colors and textures of isolated portions of beautiful cars. Don has numerous pieces in private and corporate collections. He was commissioned to produce poster artwork for the Thousand Oaks Car Classic as well as the Mercedes-Benz show at Fashion Island and the Muckenthaler Motor Car Festival.

Ken Eberts still looks at each work as a fresh, individual idea event after 30 years into his career as an automotive fine artist. He has created event posters, limited edition prints, and has won numerous awards for his talents among these the Peter Helck Award at the AFAS Exhibition at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and the Richard Teague Award at the Meadow Brook Hall Concours d’Elegance. Eberts was a Founder of the Automotive Fine Arts Society, and has been President since inception.

Art Fitzpatrick is 91 and still going, maybe not quite as strong, but still going. Fitz began in 1937 by designing what are now classic cars that are winning Best of Show at Concours and Shows around the country. He began painting portraits of cars for automobile ads at the end of WWII. They’ve been viewed and remembered by millions of readers in both national and international ads for more than 15 different car marques, and in articles in magazines such as Life, Look, and Esquire, as well as car interest magazines both here and abroad. With over 40 awards in both national and international competitions, it is by the numbers certainly the world’s most famous automobile art. In addition to his private commissions, recent work has been 10 car stamps for two U.S. Postage Stamp series, screen credit for consulting on Pixar’s Oscar nominated film “Cars”, and creating the “EyesOnDesign” poster for the Detroit show last summer.

Rey Isip is an alumnus of Pratt Institute and Art Center College of Design and his industrial design credits include Ford Motor Company, Chrysler Corporation, W.B. Ford Associates in Detroit and Raymond Loewy Associates in Paris. Isip’s gallery credits include representation in California, New York, New Mexico, Arizona, and Baja Mexico. Isip’s automotive and abstract paintings are featured locally at Jack’s Restaurant in Dana Point.

Richard Lewis graduated from Southern California Institute of Architecture and is a structural engineer. Lewis has had solo exhibitions at the Automotive Hall of Fame and the San Diego Automotive Museum. He has shown at the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival and at the Dana Point Concours d’Elegance. In 2005 he was accepted into the Guild of Motoring Artists.

Toby Nippel pleased readers of Road & Track magazine during the late 1950s or early 1960s with art that was run as Salon paintings. Many of today’s automotive artists were inspired by his paintings and they still are masterpieces of creating the look of leather or the subtle differences of the various metal surfaces of the automobile. Nippel graduated from the Art Center College of Design and has worked with Ford Motor Company.

Steve Posson captures life in motion. Posson’s art can be found in galleries and in public and private collections around the world. Posson studied automobile design at Art Center College of Design and designed prototype bodywork for Jeep, Volvo and Renault, as well as motorcycle designs for Kawasaki, Yamaha and BMW. The California artist now combines his passion for vehicles, his creative talents and his love of the ancient technique of lost-wax bronze casting. Posson’s corporate clients have included Harley-Davidson, Ford Motor Company, American Motorcyclist Association, Helmet House, Petersen Automobile Museum and the Amici Americani de la Mille Miglia.

Nicola Wood has been the featured cover artist for Sports Car Market and Juxtapoz. Wood brings a feeling of romance and glamour to her automotive art and that, with a dash of surrealism, extends the appeal of her work. Her Magic Realist paintings let the viewer become a part of the story. Nicola is the recipient of numerous honors and awards. Her work has been displayed at many Concours events throughout the country.

Ernest Wrege has specialized in producing exacting paintings of exotic automobiles for many years and has participated in many exhibitions across the country. Wrege’s automobile paintings explore the distortions of mirrored images in convex and concave surfaces. While Wrege looks for “any automobile image which can become a part of an interesting composition,” he prefers to paint details of sports & race cars of 1930-1960 vintage.

Roger Zrimec studied automotive design at the Art Center College of Design and has worked as an automotive designer for 26 years, mostly for Chrysler, Mitsubishi, Jaguar Cars, and A.B. Volvo. Zrimec’s paintings range from non-objective abstract to automotive art. Often impressionistic, Zrimec’s paintings are bold in composition and unique in viewing angle of the subject, and they are represented in many private collections worldwide.

Don ‘The Snake’ Prudhomme Will Exhibit Four Classic Funny Cars & Transporter at Dana Point Concours d’Elegance(TM)

14 05 2010

DANA POINT, CA – May 11, 2010 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The Dana Point Concours d’Elegance™(www.DanaPointConcours.org) today announced that the 2010 event Honorary Chairman, Don “The Snake” Prudhomme, will be exhibiting four of his classic Funny Cars, as well as his recently restored transporter.

Headlining the exhibit will be Prudhomme’s original restoration of the only remaining Mattel Hot Wheels 1970 Plymouth Barracuda Funny Car as made famous during the “Snake vs. Mongoose” match racing promotion, which saw Prudhomme and Tom McEwen square off in match races across the country while also making countless appearances at toy stores, retail outlets and other locations.

The car also made appearances on Plymouth’s popular 1971 Rapid Transit tour.  Many years later, Prudhomme reacquired the car and began an extensive in-house restoration, which was overseen by Prudhomme and with long-time employee Willie Wolter as project manager, was finally completed in 2008.  Originally built by Ronnie Scrima at Exhibition Engineering in Van Nuys, California, this original restoration features the original 446 cubic-inch motor, original body and original rolling chassis.  It also includes an original 671 blower, and original front (Cragar) and rear (Halibrand) wheels.

Also on display and transporting the Yellow ‘Cuda is Prudhomme’s frame-off and fully restored 1967 Dodge D-700 crew cab Hot Wheels Ramp Truck, which famously toted his Funny Cars during the 1970′s match racing era.  Upon its discovery by Dick Maxwell from Plymouth, the ramp truck was originally purchased by Prudhomme in Greensboro, NC in 1969, with the ramp section customized and installed per his specific racing needs.

The ramp truck then went into service beginning in 1970 as an integral part of the “Snake vs. Mongoose” promotion, with photos of the ramp truck appearing in many magazine articles, news stories, and packaging for Hot Wheels toys, models and track sets.  Upon conclusion of the Hot Wheels promotion at the end of the 1972 season, the ramp truck was then sold by Prudhomme to a buyer in California.

Thirty-five years later and having already restored many of his older funny cars, Prudhomme wanted to locate, purchase and restore the ramp truck in order to have the complete, original touring package.  Using the original VIN number and some assistance from local law enforcement, Prudhomme tracked down the vehicle in early 2008 to find that it was still owned by the same buyer who purchased it from him in 1973 and that the truck had in fact never left the State of California.

Once relocated to his Vista, California racing headquarters, Prudhomme personally oversaw its complete, frame-off restoration which was done largely in-house.  Also includes; original bill of sale, original work order for ramp modification, original spare 1966 426-cubic inch stock Hemi cast-iron motor, and Prudhomme’s original driving suit, helmet and uniform.

Prudhomme’s exhibit will also feature the white 1972 Hot Wheels sponsored Plymouth ‘Cuda funny car, 1974 Army sponsored Chevrolet Vega funny car and the 1978 Army Plymouth Arrow funny car, which proudly carries the “Number 1″ to reflect his fourth consecutive NHRA World Championship season.  For additional photos and information on Prudhomme and his collection of cars, please visit http://danapointconcours.org/dana-point/media/press-release/snakes-collection.php and www.snakeracing.com.
