LOS ANGELES, CA – July 17, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Motorcycle drifting has been the hottest trend in street motorcycling this year, with many YouTube videos posting well over 3 million views and one featuring XDL athletes Nick “Apex” Brocha and Ernie “E-Dub” Vigil even reaching almost 11 million. The subject of motorcycle drifting has been on the minds of XDL management since the beginning of the year and in the early Spring discussions ensued with Motul over starting a motorcycle drift competition. The result is the Motul Drift Battle that will feature a single rider format in which an athlete has to complete a drift course in the shortest amount of time possible and will also be judged on style. Given that XDL competes in small and large venues, the configuration will be flexible to allow for the Motul Drift Battle to be run in even the smallest XDL venues.
“There is a rather ironic twist in the development of motorcycle drifting into an XDL competition,” stated XDL series founder Randy Grube. “One of the most commonly asked questions is: ‘What does XDL stand for?’ and I usually have to come up with a long-winded explanation. The truth is that XDL stands for ‘Xtreme Drifting League,’ a name that dates back to a prior lifetime when I was engaged in automotive racing and drift events. I remember getting into an argument with branding expert about 2 years ago that said the name XDL is bad because it doesn’t reflect what the sport is about and he wanted to change the name, which I refused to do. Now it looks like we’ve come full circle and the name XDL might actually be the most fitting thing we can come up with! I’m so glad Motul came on board for this project in 2012 and I look forward to a lot of exciting riding, or rather, drifting.”
“Motul has been an XDL sponsor for 2 years now, and we saw enough promise in the series to allow us to make this big jump and jointly develop content with XDL. ” remarked Motul USA President Dave Wolman. “It’s an exciting time because motorcycling as a form of entertainment is going global quickly with the help of video clips on YouTube and the heavy use of Facebook. XDL has a good plan and a lot of promise of growing into an strong action sports property both here in the U.S. and overseas, and we’re excited to be part of the team.”
