Government Tax Credit Extension for 2-Wheel Electric Vehicles Promises Growth for Brammo and Jobs Locally

2 01 2013

ASHLAND, OR – January 2, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Brammo, Inc., a leading developer of electric vehicle technology and manufacturer of two-wheel electric vehicles, is delighted by the news from Washington D.C. that the federal tax credit for electric motorcycles and other two and three-wheeled vehicles has been extended through 2012 and 2013. With this extension, electric motorcycle enthusiasts will continue to receive personal tax incentives when purchasing the Enertia Plus, Empulse and Empulse R models.

BRAMMO, INC. EMPULSE R CUSTOMER

The provision, passed late last night along with other fiscal reforms, extends the federal tax credit for two and three-wheeled electric plug-in vehicles for two years. This tax credit can cover up to 10% of the vehicle’s cost or a maximum of $2,500.

Brammo sends particular thanks to U.S. Rep. Greg Walden (R-Ore.) whom offered the amendment, and Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) who strongly supported the tax credit despite the difficult environment in the House. Additional support from U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) not only for electric vehicles, but for sustainability and clean energy initiatives overall, will continue to help drive Oregon as a leader of green and clean legislation.

“This bi-partisan work and cooperation results in jobs and support for companies like Brammo,” said Craig Bramscher , CEO of Brammo. “We are excited for what this means for electric vehicles and the electric motorcycle industry, which will make these ‘vehicles of the future’ more accessible to all consumers.”

Electric Motorcycles in Search of a Market

14 10 2012

JUST when we’ve accepted that we won’t be blasting to Starbucks on jetpacks any time soon, another icon of techno-fantasy has raised its emission-free, pennies-per-mile head: electric motorcycles.

Despite a barrage of ambitious prototypes, like the metal-and-glass-enclosed Lit Motors C-1, promoted in YouTube test-ride videos and breathless news releases, electric motorcycles seem to be around the corner but out of reach.

If blog buzz and “Buy Now” Web site buttons translated into units sold, we’d be talking about a major growth industry here. But even with ice caps melting and gasoline around $4 a gallon, the number of electric motorcycles sold is barely detectable.

The appeal of an electric motorcycle is obvious. It would deliver its power silently and instantly, without the need for oil, fire, smoke, noise, clutch or gearbox. Each fill-up would cost just a dollar. It might even talk to your iPhone, though it’s hard to imagine what kind of a useful conversation the two might have. An electric bike might someday be the next big thing, in a “what would Steve Jobs have ridden” sort of way.

But, as many would-be electric motorcycle makers have discovered, making a salable and profitable electric bike is much harder than it looks.

Honda sells a sleek, quiet, gas-powered streetbike called the CBR250R. It’s an electric bike maker’s nightmare, because for $4,509, it gets 77 miles per gallon, equals available electric motorcycles in performance, has at least double the range and can be “recharged” at any gas station in about a minute.

Zero Motorcycles, based in Santa Cruz, Calif., says it’s the only company actually selling electric motorcycles in the United States, and none of its competitors seem to want to argue.

Its 2013 Zero S ZF11.4, expected to be available in January, roughly compares to the Honda CBR250R in looks, size, weight and performance. The company claims it has a range of 137 miles in slow, stop-and-go city traffic and 70 miles at 70 m.p.h. It costs $15,995 and shipping.

No electric motorcycle companies reveal their United States sales figures. For most of them, that number would be close to zero. In fact, it’s highly unlikely that more than 1,000 electric bikes total were sold last year. By comparison, the Motorcycle Industry Council reported that in 2011, 440,899 gasoline-powered bikes were sold in the United States.

If electric bikes can’t compete on performance or price, they’ll have to win on emotion. If customers don’t need them, they are going to have to want them.

Since 1984, Harley-Davidson has sold hundreds of thousands of essentially obsolete motorcycles a year, at a premium price to faster, smoother Japanese machines. For a lot of that time, the company has been worth more than General Motors. That’s because Harley isn’t really selling motorcycles. It is selling a lifestyle and a mythical image: that of a rough, tough American individualist.

Until an electric bike maker captivates many thousands of people — picture the lines at Apple stores — they are doomed to compete on the cruel battleground of performance and price.

The dominant demographic in the motorcycle market has long been baby boomers, who are careening past middle age. If companies want to sell expensive bikes, they’ll have to sell a lot of them to men over 40, with enough disposable income to justify buying what looks, to many, like a two-wheeled toy.

Middle-aged motorcyclists have jobs, families and limited free time. They use their bikes mostly on the weekends and for recreation, not transportation. They want to ride fast, at least at highway speed, for more than an hour, and get back home without burning five hours of their Sunday at a charging station.

Electric motorcycle makers like to talk about a rider’s daily commuting distance and show how their bike’s limited range is just right. The problem is that most real motorcyclists don’t commute on their bikes. They commute in air-conditioned cars that keep their hair in place, their smartphones in hand and their clothes insect-free.

Remember the Segway? Its inventor, Dean Kamen, said it would “be to the car what the car was to the horse and buggy.” Investors put in more than $100 million. Then people realized that $5,000 was a lot to pay for a crash-prone scooter that was slower than a $100 bicycle.

But what really doomed the Segway was that the people who could afford to buy them didn’t want to be seen on them.

Do electric motorcycles have a present? No, though it’s fun to test ride them and watch start-up after start-up jostle for position on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

Do they have a future? Maybe. But it will take lots of money, perhaps decades of development, and smart, expensive branding and marketing — think Apple meets Harley — before it happens.

Zero Motorcycles Delivers 2013 Model Line With Double the Horsepower, Over 130 Miles Range and a CHAdeMO Accessory to Recharge to 95 Percent in One Hour

2 10 2012

Most Advanced Electric Motorcycle Lineup Yet – Arriving in Dealerships January 2013

SANTA CRUZ, CA – October 1, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) –  Zero Motorcycles, the global leader in the electric motorcycle industry, today announced its 2013 model line which features an average power increase of 99 percent and the world’s longest-range production electric motorcycle: the Zero S, capable of 137 miles in the city. To attain such leaps in performance, Zero designed a revolutionary new Z-Force™ motor that is incredibly powerful while also highly efficient, passively air-cooled and compact. Integrated into every 2013 motorcycle, the motor operates using a new higher voltage Z-Force power pack. Providing riders the option to charge faster than ever, each Zero can now be charged to 95 percent in an hour or less using CHAdeMO charge stations by way of an optional accessory. Perhaps most exciting, Zero plans to begin initial deliveries of its complete 2013 model line to North America in January 2013.

Nearly every element of each motorcycle has been refined to embody the sophisticated technology and elemental simplicity of riding a Zero. From highly innovative mobile phone integration to eye-catching styling, the 2013 lineup is impressive at every level. Using Bluetooth, riders can now sync their iPhone or Android mobile phones to see detailed motorcycle information and even adjust the performance characteristics of the motorcycle. Riders will appreciate the sleek new bodywork on the Zero S and Zero DS, which includes neatly integrated storage in the “tank” area and flows elegantly into a comfortable two-tier seat. To accommodate the new look and advanced powertrain, Zero redesigned the frames for every model with an emphasis on improving rider ergonomics and expanding compatibility with aftermarket accessories.

“With up to 137 miles range in the city, a top speed of 95 mph and a CHAdeMO accessory that allows recharging in around an hour, the 2013 model line is truly exceptional,” said Richard Walker, CEO of Zero Motorcycles. “This year’s lineup offers breathtaking acceleration, new eye-catching designs and the innovative ability to customize the riding experience to each individual’s preferences via a mobile application. We invite consumers to discover the experience of riding a 2013 model by contacting an authorized dealer to sign up for a test ride or to place an order. The new lineup arrives in January.”

Among the many highlights of the 2013 lineup, Zero Motorcycles introduced the Zero FX as the ultimate “do anything” and “ride anywhere” urban rebel motorcycle. It is the fastest accelerating motorcycle in the company’s lineup with 70 ft-lbs of torque, 44 hp and a low weight of only 275 lbs. The Zero FX, as well as the Zero XU and Zero MX, now features the world’s first truly modular quick-swap power pack technology. Riders can now use one or two battery modules and can upgrade any of the previously mentioned models from 2.8 kWh to 5.7 kWh in seconds. With increased range, vastly improved handling and impressive power, the now full-sized Zero MX is capable of comfortably launching off significantly larger jumps at the motocross track.

Continuing a design philosophy of “sophisticated simplicity” for 2013, Zero Motorcycles focused on maximizing the exhilaration of riding and minimizing needless complexity. The new Z-Force motor and overall powertrain is completely air-cooled on account of its highly efficient and innovative design. With instant torque, a nearly silent belt-driven system and no shifting, riders need only focus on enjoying the ride. For the owner, there is no routine powertrain maintenance and the “fuel” cost is only a penny a mile. Whether a longtime rider or someone who is just getting into motorcycles, the Zero Motorcycles 2013 lineup offers consumers exciting new reasons to go for a ride.

Pricing information: Each Zero Motorcycles model is 100 percent electric and, as a result, may qualify to receive government rebates or credits. Zero sells its motorcycles through authorized dealerships. Each street-legal motorcycle comes with a two year limited warranty, while the Zero MX comes with a one year limited warranty. Initial deliveries will commence in January 2013 for North America and in February 2013 for Europe. Authorized dealers will begin accepting orders on Oct. 2, 2012, from consumers who would like to secure a 2013 model. The pricing for each model is below.

Yamaha’s Joint Development of Electrically Power Assisted Bicycles with Giant Bicycles

29 08 2012

Full-fledged start of OEM supply of drive units to Europe

August 29, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. (YMC) announces its basic agreement with Giant Electric Vehicle (Kunshan) Co., Ltd. (GEV), a group company for developing and manufacturing electric bicycles and electrically power assisted bicycles for Giant Manufacturing Co., Ltd., one of the world’s largest bicycle makers. The agreement is for OEM supply of Yamaha electrically power assisted bicycle drive units and for joint development of electrically power assisted bicycles. Start of full-fledged OEM supply of drive units to Europe is scheduled to begin in September of this year.

The intent of the agreement is to establish a long-term cooperative relationship between the two companies based on the corresponding marketing strategies of YMC, with its specialization in centrally mounted drive units and intent to expand its market in Europe, and Giant, with its desire to expand its business in the German market where this type of drive unit is predominant.

The contract for joint development between YMC and GEV was signed in October 2011, and primarily involves GEV developing frames, batteries, switch meters, covers, etc. for electrically power assisted bicycles while YMC is in charge of drive unit development.

Since last year’s signing of the joint development contract, product development work has been proceeding and Giant plans to present a Giant brand electrically power assisted bicycle mounting a Yamaha drive unit at EUROBIKE, one of the world’s largest scale bicycle trade fairs scheduled to open on August 29 in Germany.

In recent years, electrically power assisted bicycles have become collectively known as “e-bikes” in Europe and demand for these bicycles reached approximately 700,000 units in 2011 (YMC estimate), making Europe one of the largest markets in the world. Germany and the Netherlands are the two main markets for e-bikes, accounting for over half of total European demand.

As part of the company’s growth strategy, YMC is currently pursuing the expansion of domestic sales of CBU electrically power assisted bicycles in Japan and supplying drive units on an OEM basis. Additional efforts include strengthening and expanding tie-ups with bicycle makers and engaging in OEM supply of drive units to Europe. YMC aims to achieve a scale of 100,000 units in total OEM supply to Europe in 2015.

Zero Motorcycles Delivers 2012 Model Line With Over 100 Miles Range, More Power and New “Life of Motorcycle” Power Pack

8 11 2011

- Game-Changing New Motorcycles to Begin Shipping in February 2012 -

SANTA CRUZ, CA – November 8, 2011 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Zero Motorcycles today announced its 2012 model line that includes a revolutionary new powertrain, models capable of exceeding 100 miles range, a power pack designed to last the life of the motorcycle and top speeds of up to 88 mph. Stealthy looking and contemporary, every model has been transformed to be faster, go further and, in the spirit of all two wheeled enthusiasts, to be more fun than ever before. Innovating at an exceptional pace, Zero Motorcycles plans to begin delivery of its complete 2012 model line in February 2012. This will mark the first time in transportation history that a mass production electric motorcycle capable of exceeding 100 miles range will be available for consumers to own.

Zero’s new Z-Force™ power pack uses a completely new battery cell chemistry and configuration that is up to 95% more energy dense and is rated to 3,000 complete charge cycles before hitting 80% capacity. This means that a Zero S could travel as much as 308,000 miles on its original power pack. All Zero’s on and off-road motorcycles leverage the new technology meaning that the power pack is designed to exceed the longevity expected of any conventional motorcycle. The result is a complete electric motorcycle line that offers owners exhilarating rides while saving on gas and virtually all routine powertrain maintenance.

“The 2012 model line is truly game changing. It marks the first time in history that riders can actually own an electric motorcycle that is capable of exceeding 100 miles of range on a single charge,” said Scot Harden, VP of Global Marketing of Zero Motorcycles. “Every model in the lineup goes faster, further and is more fun than ever before. These are not concepts. In less than three months, riders can see and purchase 2012 models at authorized Zero Motorcycles dealers.”

The Zero S, a street fighter, and Zero DS, a dual sport, are both available in a 6 or 9 kWh configuration. As measured by the EPA UDDS, the Zero S is capable of respectively achieving 76 or 114 miles. Both motorcycles offer a higher top speed, with the Zero DS hitting 80 mph and the Zero S topping out at 88 mph. Perhaps more importantly, both motorcycles offer a broad torque band and stealthy acceleration from 0 rpm that makes them incredibly fun to ride. In addition, all the street models, including the Zero XU, feature new brushless motors and regenerative braking that allow riders to recoup energy during deceleration. The Zero XU, a motorcycle designed for inner city riding, now uses the same maintenance-free belt drive system as the Zero S and Zero DS. Brushless air-cooled motors, life of motorcycle power packs and belt drive systems make Zero’s lineup of street models just about the world’s easiest to own form of transportation.

If you are interested in opening up new off-road riding possibilities with a nearly silent dirt bike, Zero has two models that are better looking and faster than ever before to meet your needs. For 2012, Zero streamlined its off-road model line. The Zero X, designed for trail riding, is now exclusively available with lights and is street-legal. With 33% more overall power and 75% greater range, it now uses the same championship winning powertrain as the Zero MX. Built for motocross riding and now exclusively available for off-road only, the Zero MX also received more power and offers riders the ability to accelerate harder and hit higher top speeds. Both off-road models have a bold new design that speaks to their more aggressive and longer lasting powertrain.

Kandi Technologies Reports Second Quarter 2011 Financial Results

15 08 2011

Company Continues to Focus on Building a Solid Foundation for EV Sales in China

JINHUA, CHINA – August 15, 2011 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Kandi Technologies, Corp. (NASDAQ: KNDI), a leading Chinese supplier of off-road vehicles and developer of pure electric vehicles (EV), today reported improved financial results for the second quarter and six months ended June 30, 2011, highlighted by double-digit growth in operating income and adjusted net income (described below) on modest revenue growth.

Second quarter 2011 financial highlights:

  • Revenues increased 2.3%, to $10.1 million, from $9.9 million a year earlier, reflecting continued strong growth in go-kart sales. Sequentially, sales were up 22% compared to the first quarter of 2011
  • Operating income increased to $0.8 million, up 18.4% from $0.7 million in the second quarter of 2010
  • Net income more than tripled to $3.6 million, or $0.13 per diluted share, compared to net income of $1.2 million, or $0.05 per diluted share in the same period last year. The non-GAAP adjusted net income (described below) grew by 24.6% as compared to the second quarter of 2010
  • Working capital surplus of $23.0 million at quarter-end, improved from working capital surplus of $18.5 million at the end of 2010
  • Cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash totaled $36.1 million at quarter-end, which equates to $1.26 per fully diluted share, a 43.7% increase from $25.2 million at the end of 2010

“While our primary focus in the second quarter continued to be building a strong base for future EV sales in China, we benefitted from strong sales in our legacy go-kart business, as well as stronger ATV sales through the first six months,” said Mr. Xiaoming Hu, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Kandi Technologies. “Net income and sales in the period advanced strongly on a sequential basis and, in the case of net income, on a year-over-year basis as well. While unit volume remained low, we also realized higher per unit revenue in our super mini-car business. Our successful financing last year greatly strengthened our balance sheet and cash position, which will permit us to grow our EV business in China as the pace of infrastructure development advances. Over the past few months, we have greatly solidified our positions in Jinhua and Hangzhou, where we made significant progress in strengthening our relationship with State Grid to create the infrastructure needed to foster widespread adoption and use of EVs in China. We continue to believe the anticipated success in these cities will serve as models for many other cities and regions in China. We are committed to our technology and continue to invest in developing the products that will provide efficient, low-cost new energy transportation to the growing Chinese market.”

To support its ongoing development efforts, Kandi continued to invest in research and development to improve existing products and foster new products. During the quarter, the Company invested $0.6 million in research and development, an increase of 43.5% from the second quarter of 2010. Over the first six months, research and development increased 46.1%, to nearly $1.1 million when compared to the comparable period of 2010.

“With respect to EV sales globally, we are taking a long-term view of our markets, establishing the infrastructure needed to meet current and future demand,” said Mr. Hu. “With this in mind, we have invested in our production facilities to increase overall capacity”

Second Quarter 2011 Results

The modest increase in second-quarter revenues reflected significant increases in sales of go-karts, which nearly doubled to $6.2 million. The second quarter gross profit was $2.3 million in 2011, as compared to $2.4 million in the second quarter of 2010, while gross margin decreased to 23.1%, from 23.7% in the prior year, primarily as a result of a shift in product mix during the quarter. The Company’s operating income was $0.8 million in 2011, compared to $0.7 million in the second quarter of 2010. Year-to-date operating income more than doubled to $1.7 million from $0.7 million in the prior year first half.

The Company’s net income totaled $3.6 million for the quarter, or $0.13 per fully diluted share, as compared with net income of $1.2 million, or $0.05 per fully diluted share, for the same period of 2010. Without the convertible notes, warrant and option-related charges, non-GAAP adjusted net income increased 24.6% to $1.3 million, compared to $1.1 million in the same period of 2010. In the first six months of 2011, reported net income including changes in fair value was $9.6 million or $0.33 per diluted share. Excluding these items, non-GAAP adjusted net income was $2.0 million or $0.07 per share on 28.8 million fully diluted shares

Building the Foundation for EV Leadership

As previously reported, in the second quarter of 2011 the Company made significant additional progress in building the foundation for future EV sales. Of note, the Company:

  • Received formal provincial government approval of RMB 15 million ($2.3 million U.S.) annual subsidy on the Company’s application for a new energy vehicle pilot program in Jinhua City. Together with the Jinhua city government subsidy, a total of RMB 30 million ($4.6 million U.S.) per year in government subsidies to residents is available for the purchase Kandi clean energy vehicles through 2012
  • Hosted a visit from Mr. Liang Nie, general manager of Dayou Technology Development Company, the State Grid subsidiary responsible for the development and operation of battery charging and changing facilities in the city of Hangzhou
  • Displayed a variety of EVs at the 13th Zhejiang Investment and Trade Fair and the 10th China International Consumer Goods Fair, which were held in Ningbo
  • Signed a strategic cooperation agreement with State Grid affiliate Hangzhou Electric Vehicle Service Co., Ltd., for the launch of a 20,000 pure EV pilot program for Hangzhou residents through the end of 2012

In addition, the Company took steps to strengthen corporate governance and build shareholder value by:

  • Improving the quality and independence of the Company’s Board of Directors and improving internal control with the naming of a new independent board member and engaging a “big four” professional firm
  • Obtaining Board approval of a $5 million share repurchase program over the following 18 months

Stronger Second Half EV Sales

“Kandi continues its progress toward becoming a leader in the pure EV market in China,” said Mr. Hu. “Given our strategic relationships and investments, we believe Kandi is well positioned to anticipate growing demand for EVs. That said, we recognize that the organic development of markets for these emerging technologies will take time. As a result, we expect sales to grow modestly over the near term.”
