New Data Shows Harley-Davidson Also Continues to Lead Market in Other Key Customer Demographics

According to Polk data, in 2012, for the fifth straight year, Harley-Davidson was the number one seller of new street motorcycles (all engine sizes) in the United States to young adults ages 18-34, women, African-Americans and Hispanics, as well as Caucasian men ages 35 plus. The newly available data shows that Harley-Davidson experienced a double-digit market share gain from 2008 to 2012 in the U.S. with these customer groups.

A DIVERSE FAMILY OF RIDERS

In 2012, sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles grew in each of the company’s key U.S. customer segments. Altogether, Harley-Davidson’s U.S. sales to young adults, women, African Americans and Hispanics grew at more than twice the rate of sales to Caucasian men 35 plus.

According to the Polk data, for street motorcycles (all engine sizes):

  • Harley-Davidson attracts more U.S. young adults, ages 18-34, than any other motorcycle brand in the U.S., and in 2012 sold nearly twice as many new street motorcycles to young adults as its nearest competitor.
  • The company sold more new street motorcycles in 2012 to women in the U.S. than all other brands combined.

Description: This recall involves Gerbings and Harley-Davidson® black nylon, 12-volt, heated jacket liners. The jacket liners heat up when plugged into a vehicle, such as a motorcycle or snowmobile. “Gerbing’s Heated Clothing” or “Harley Davidson®” is printed on the front left chest of the jacket liners. The Gerbing’s jacket liners have model number JKLN and PO# 3796 and Harley-Davidson® jackets have model number 98324-09VM and GM32873, GM32874, GM34188, GM34189, GM34190 or GM34191. The model number, PO number and “Use only 12 Volts” are printed on a label sewn inside next to the jacket liner’s front zipper.

Incidents/Injuries: Gerbings has received two reports of the jacket liners overheating, causing minor dime-sized burns to consumers’ backs, resulting in blisters.

This system positively secures the compensating sprocket so that it can’t come loose.  Rubber mounted engines may insulate the rider and frame mounted components from vibration, but the entire power train which includes the compensating sprocket, is still at risk from fasteners coming loose due to shaking.  Additionally, today’s larger and more powerful engines can cause a lesser fastening system to come loose from the large power pulses combined with the back and forth motion from getting on and off the throttle.  An unsecured compensating sprocket can have dangerous and expensive consequences.

Along with drive line security, the JIMS® Compensating Sprocket Lock Kit keeps the alternator rotor in place to prevent damage to the charging system.
