Underdogs Jake Holden and Evan Steel Performance Prepare to Race in 2012

23 02 2012

February 23, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – With round one at Daytona quickly approaching, teams and riders are busy gearing up for the 2012 AMA Pro Racing season.  Rider Jake Holden and the team at Evan Steel Performance (ESP) are no exception, working hard in their backyard “fun factory” during the offseason.

At the end of a dirt road in Tucson, Arizona, sits Evan Steel Performance, a small motorcycle service and repair shop owned by Evan Steel and Phil Allison.  The shop, which began with a dyno and a trailer in 2005, now doubles as headquarters for building Jake Holden’s BMW S1000RR, which the team will race this season in the AMA Pro National Guard Superbike class.

Holden moved to Arizona four months ago to join the ESP team.   Since the move, he’s been spending nearly every weekend enjoying what he calls the “fun factory” of local tracks—the Mussleman Honda Circuit, MC Motorsports Park, and Arizona Motorsports Park.  “I couldn’t ask for more,” he says.

Holden is no stranger to the AMA paddock.  He turned pro in 1999 and has regularly competed in the AMA series, finishing third overall in two AMA Pro national championships, achieving 14 AMA Pro national podiums, three pole positions, four track records, and several top-five finishes.  Allison, who first met Holden in 2004, describes him as “one of the best talents in the paddock.”

The ESP team has been competing in the AMA Pro series for the last 7 years, earning kudos with some of the fastest trap speeds, several front row starts, and numerous podiums.  And, they’ve been doing it all on a bootstrap budget.

A tight budget makes the BMW S1000RR a perfect fit for this privateer team. The bike, already stocked with a 193 horsepower, lightweight engine, saves the team from having to purchase costly upgrades while keeping them competitive on the track.

They are, after all, racing to win.  “I believe we can go there and get a trophy.  That’s what we’re trying to do,” says Steel.

With Holden on board, both Allison and Steel are confident about the season ahead.  “He’s an incredible rider, and he’s very much a professional rider,” says Steel.  Allison agrees, “I think we could win some superbike races with him.”

Allison and Steel currently divide their time between working at the shop and racing, trying to earn enough money to make it to as many AMA rounds as possible. They hope to garner enough sponsor support for a dedicated racing division, giving them the ability to devote all their time to competing.  ESP is currently seeking a title sponsor.

The team has a huge amount of local support from the motorcycle community, all of whom want to see them go racing and do well.  This passionate crowd helps by pitching in money and parts.  Their current sponsors include Iron Horse Motorcycles, GPR, Driven, KyleUSA.com, Ohlins, OTL Magazine, Hotbodies, KurveyGirl.com, U.S. Mega-Max.com, Intuition, Carrozzeria USA, XCEL Trackdays, GB Racing, ASMA, Leo Vince, Sidi, Shoei, Ballistik Apparel, Supernova Cycles, Mid Town Bar and Grill, and War Paint by Steve Wellman.

Fans also support ESP and Holden, donating online and purchasing t-shirts, posters, and decals—all making a difference in getting this team on the track.

As a team that’s known for doing a lot with a little, Allison explains it best, “hard work and the desire to be at the front—that’s what we do.”

Jake Holden to Race in Place of Injured Pat Clark Motorsports Rider Ben Bostrom

24 09 2010

LAS VEGUS, NV – September 23, 2010 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Pat Clark Motorsports rider Ben Bostrom, who recently won both the poll and the race at the 7th round of the 2010 AMA Superbike season at Laguna Seca, will be unable to ride in the upcoming Superbike Classic at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama due to injuries sustained on Labor Day weekend at the New Jersey Motorsports Park.

Racing in Bostrom’s place will be veteran rider Jake Holden, who finished 4th at Laguna Seca and 5th in Race 2 at this year’s Road America in American Superbike. Holden turned Pro in 1999 and has competed regularly in AMA Pro Superbike and Superstock since 2000. Over the past ten years, he has turned in consistently outstanding results.

Bostrom, who was going into Barber with an impressive 4th place ranking, broke ribs four and at the AMA Superbike race in Millville, New Jersey. Bostrom had hoped to recover in time to compete in Birmingham, but decided against doing so after attempting to ride his R1 street bike on Tuesday. Had he been able to race, Bostrom had an excellent chance of getting into the top three. Bostrom was very pleased with the decision to send Holden to Barber in his place. Bostrom said, “Holden is a master at Barber and Laguna. I think he will really do the team justice.”

Riding with Holden on the Pat Clark Motorsports team will be Chris Clark, who is currently in 10th position and hoping to retain that ranking going into the 2011 season. Team Manager, Ron Heben, remains very optimistic about the upcoming race. “Losing Ben this late in the season is a very tough break, but we’ve had a very good year and we believe that Jake Holden is an exceptional rider who has everything that it takes to help us finish strong. Ben’s injuries could have been a lot worse, but there’s no question that Ben and Chris will go into the 2011 season with tremendous momentum behind them.”

Holden Scores AMA Vance & Hines XR1200 series victory at NJMP

8 09 2010

MILWAUKEE, WI – September 7, 2010 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – RMR/Bruce Rossmeyer Daytona Racing rider Jake Holden scored his first victory in the AMA Pro Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 series with a dominating flag-to-flag victory at New Jersey Motorsports Park on September 6.

With Holden’s teammate and pre-New Jersey series points leader Danny Eslick sitting out the round to concentrate on his tight battle for the championship in the AMA Pro Daytona SportBike class, Holden looked to have clear sailing early in the weekend. A strong showing by newcomer PJ Jacobson, who qualified in second position on the Celtic Racing entry, hinted he might be Holden’s toughest competition, but at the start of Sunday’s 12-lap feature race it was RMR/Rossmeyer’s Kyle Wyman who got the holeshot into turn one and led part of the first lap.

“I was smoking my hush puppies on the start. I almost looped it,” said Holden, who was third into the first corner after his bike wheelied off the starting line. “I knew I had to get out there and possibly make a gap because I knew these guys were starting to pick up the pace. I felt like I was pushing the envelope there for a bit after I got by Kyle and PJ trying to break a gap. Then just put my head down and went for the win.”

Once he gained the lead, Holden checked out as Jacobson and Wyman diced for the second step of the podium, waging a back and forth drafting battle in the race’s late stages. Wyman moved back into second on lap 10, only to be repassed by Jacobson on the penultimate lap, setting up what looked to be drag race off the final corner to the checkered flag. But on the final lap, Wyman was unable to make the slingshot pass work and Jacobson held onto to second place by a 0.203 second margin.

“Kyle and I had an awesome battle. I didn’t really know what to expect near the end with the tire wearing a little bit. It was definitely a fun race,” said Jacobson, who ran most of the race with a broken shifter.

“I got a lucky break getting the holeshot there and getting out front first, but then Jake came by me in turn five, and then PJ came by me in the last corner there on the first lap and I knew I had to tag onto one of those guys and try to go with them,” Wyman said. “I brought [PJ] back a little at the end and got by him. He came back by me on the next lap and we were really close. I thought I was going to be able to do it at the end. On the last lap coming out of turn nine with his broken shifter he kind of missed a shift and I was right up underneath his rear end and had to check up a little bit and then I couldn’t get the drive out of there.”

In fourth place, MotorcycleUSA.com editor Steve Atlas posted a strong fourth place result for HOG Racing in his series debut, followed by Harv’s Harley-Davidson’s Travis Wyman in fifth, RMR/Rossmeyer’s Joe Rozynski in sixth and James Gang/Hoban Brothers Racing’s Paul James in seventh. Michael Corbino (RMR/Rossmeyer) and Matthew Heidel (Shar-Tuff Racing) rounded out the order.

The five-round Vance & Hines XR1200 series concludes September 25-26 with the final round of the 2010 AMA Pro Racing season at Barber Motorsports Park in Leeds, Alabama.

Eslick wins inaugural XR1200 Series Race at Road America

8 06 2010

MILWAUKEE, WI  – June 7, 2010 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Racing/RMR rider Danny Eslick took a thrilling victory over teammate Jake Holden in the debut of the AMA Pro Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 Series at Road America June 6.

Eslick, the reigning AMA Daytona Sportbike champion and current points leader, dominated the time sheets all weekend, but had his hands full during the back-and-forth 10-lap race, nipping Holden at the line to take a narrow 0.055-second margin of victory with a last lap drafting pass at the finish line.

“It’s a super fun bike to ride, and I had a really fun race with Jake,” Eslick said. “He was struggling in a few spots to get it turned and on the last lap he missed a shift and hit the limiter. That killed his drive and kinda handed me the win. But I’d been practicing drafting him to the line on a few laps so I think I had it figured out anyway.”

The battle for the third step on the podium was equally thrilling, with brothers Kyle (Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Racing /RMR) and Travis Wyman (Harv’s Harley-Davidson Racing) battling with Jones Brothers Racing’s Eric Stump. The trio put on an impressive battle, with Stump eventually prevailing over Kyle Wyman by a mere 0.025-second gap. Travis Wyman finished fifth, followed by Shawn Conrad (WFOracingonline.com/Spyke’s Harley-Davidson), Joseph Rozynski (Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Racing/RMR), Aaron Frank (HOG Magazine/Vance & Hines), and John Ashmead (Brady-Schwemmer Racing).

Sunday’s race finished late in the afternoon after a four-hour delay caused by two separate red flag incidents, the first of which was caused by a loose oil filter on Kyle Wyman’s bike that resulted in he and another rider crashing in Turn five on the third lap of the race. During the restart, James Gang/Hoban Brothers Racing rider Paul James got tangled with another bike just past the start/finish line, causing a second red flag. James returned to the track after a medical check, but was unable to join the final restart.

The Vance & Hines XR1200 series returns to action July 18-19 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, OH.
