AURORA, IL – May 2, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) - Feld Motor Sports® announced today that CBS will broadcast an all-new, one-hour feature on the 2013 season and the future of Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, fittingly named Changing of the Guard on Sunday, May 5, at 1:00PM ET.
Bob Hannah became the sport’s first three-time 450SX Class Champion in 1979 before the Honda era reigned supreme from 1982-1996, winning 13 championships with seven different riders. Jeremy McGrath gave Honda four consecutive championships en route to becoming the all-time winningest supercross racer with seven titles. As the McGrath era turned the page, Ricky Carmichael soon became the new dominant force in supercross as he captured five titles. Shifting gears, James Stewart and Chad Reed simultaneously consumed this space as well as a fierce rivalry that fed the headlines.
The new era of Monster Energy Supercross has begun with the four riders – Ryan Villopoto, Davi Millsaps, Ryan Dungey and Justin Barcia – responsible for the Changing of the Guard. CBS will showcase how these athletes ascended to the top of the sport in 2013 and set the tone for a bright future in one of the world’s most captivating forms competiton.
Villopoto joined the elite company of Hannah, McGrath and Carmichael last Saturday night when he secured his third consecutive 450SX Class Championship with a class-leading ninth victory of the season.
“A championship is a championship, but it makes it harder when there’s five, six guys that can win it versus one,” said Villopoto. “It’s harder to win now than I think it’s ever been.”
Before giving way to Villopoto in the championship hunt, seven-year 450SX Class veteran Davi Millsaps controlled the points race for the first time in his career. After capturing a surprise victory at the opening race in Anaheim, Millsaps captured seven podium finishes through the first eight races, including a pair of wins.
Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey, the 2010 450SX Class Champion, also scored a pair of wins this season and landed on the podium 11 times en route to an average finish of 3.3, further enhancing the argument that Dungey is the new “Mr. Consistency.”
Between Dungey and his 250SX Class teammate Ken Roczen, they gave Red Bull KTM its first-ever Main Event sweep at the third stop in Anaheim, which was followed by the same achievement with Marvin Musquin in Minneapolis.
Highly touted rookie Justin Barcia, who rides for Team Honda Muscle Milk, etched his name in the record books by winning in the second Main Event of his 450SX Class career and becoming the division’s 56th different winner. Only two other riders before Barcia were able to win so early in their 450SX Class career; Sebastien Tortelli won the first 450SX Class start of his career, while Bob Hannah won the second start of his 450SX Class career
“It’s crazy to be racing against those guys that have won all these 450SX Class championships,” explained Barcia. “For me, I’ve looked up to some of those riders and now being competitive with them and racing against them, it’s pretty awesome. You don’t really think about that when you get out there on the line, but sometimes you sit back and relax thinking about racing the best guys in the world and how you could be one of them.”
While veteran riders Chad Reed and James Stewart, each of whom are two-time Monster Energy Supercross Champions, also made their presence felt throughout the 2013 season, it was this foursome of riders that stole the spotlight week in and week out. Over the last three races, these riders are the only competitors to stand on the podium, establishing a comfortable margin over the field in the championship standings.
“As the years keep going by, there definitely seems to be a lot more guys coming up, whether it’s from the 250SX Class or guys who have been in the 450SX Class challenging for that top spot even more,” commented Dungey. “We’re putting more and more pressure on the guys to be there every weekend, which is raising the bar. That level of intensity is getting better as well, so with that many good guys out there, the racing is only going to get better and tougher. To win, it’s going to mean all that much more.”

Stewart optimistic about returning for 2013 AMA Pro Motocross season
CHINO, CA – April 18, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing’s James Stewart announced today that he will sit out the last three rounds of the 2013 AMA/FIM Supercross Championship season in order to fully recover from injury. At last weekend’s Minneapolis race, the Yoshimura Suzuki rider suffered a get-off and tweaked the wrist he’d initially injured at the end of the 2012 AMA Pro Motocross season. He expects to be rested, rehabbed and ready to race at the season-opening round of AMA Pro Motocross in May.
“The decision to sit out the last few races is a tough one for all of us,” said Stewart. “The Supercross season hasn’t been going the best, but I’ve been having a great time racing, thanks to the fans and my Yoshimura Suzuki team. They’ve all been supporting me the whole time. So to have this last little injury – I hurt my wrist in the heat race and then again in the main event – was a disappointment. I think this is the smart decision for us overall and now I’m going to focus on recovering and getting ready for the motocross season. I’m psyched to be on the gate for Hangtown and now I just want to get the 2013 AMA Pro Motocross Championship.”
Although Stewart’s 2013 Supercross season ended prematurely, the Yoshimura Suzuki rider turned in a solid performance, nonetheless. With his win at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome, Stewart became one of just three racers ever to have gone nine straight seasons with a win. Additionally, the 2013 Supercross season saw Stewart race his Yoshimura Suzuki RM-Z450 to podium finishes at both the St. Louis and Indianapolis events. Finally, Stewart won eight of his heat races this year and he was the fastest qualifier at seven events.
Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing’s next race is round one of the 2013 AMA Pro Motocross Championships on Saturday, May 18th, at the Hangtown Motocross Classic in Sacramento, CA.

CHINO, CA – April 9, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Yoshimura backed GIECO Honda’s Wil Hahn keeps the red plate leaving Houston, after a 2nd Place finish. As the gate dropped on the 250 main event, and the first turn carnage claimed its victims, Hahn found himself directly behind the battle for the lead. As Wharton and Musquin battled it out, Wil Hahn closed in.
Wil Hahn
Hahn stayed within striking distance, and made the move when Musquin threw it away in a corner on a tuff block. Hahn showed amazing speed throughout the remainder of the race, knocking on Blake Wharton’s backdoor, as the battle for the lead ensued. But a close-call through the whoops, and a missed finish-line double, kept Hahn from ultimately overtaking Wharton. As the checkered flag went up, Hahn solidified his points lead, and will be flying the red plate once again, heading into Minneapolis.
Trey Carnard
In the 450 Class – Yoshimura’s Trey Canard returns to AMA Supercross, and rode exceptionally strong, dominating the technical Texas round, and the notoriously treacherous Houston whoop section. The comeback kid showed his fans that he has what it takes to run up-front, and that he is more determined than ever to remain a top contender among the world’s fastest riders.
Justin Barcia
Justin Barcia finished off the night with a drama-free main event. After he settled in behind James Stewart at the beginning of the race, riding very consitently, he inherited the 4th place position after James’ untimely washout.
Josh Hill
Josh Hill finished a 2013-best 8th place in Houston. This represents a continuing upward-trend as the season draws to a close. Hill has been getting consistently better; and aims build on his strong Houston results with another consistent finish in Minneapolis next weekend.
Brock Tickle
Brock Tickle takes 10th, to round out the top 10 for Yoshimura at Reliant Stadium.
James Stewart
James Stewart, with an engine replacement before the main, had his sights set on a win. He showed amazing speed all night; and laid down the fastest lap of the evening, in his heat qualifier. In an unfortunate main event lap 10, Stewart lost the front wheel going into a fast corner, a crash that would dash hopes of a top 3 finish for the evening.
Next week, Yoshimura will have riders lining up at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, MN for the 14th round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series.

Musquin Wins Second Consecutive 250SX Class Main Event
INDIANAPOLIS, IN – March 16, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto won his sixth 450SX Class Main Event of the season in front of 60,312 fans at tonight’s Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, at Lucas Oil Stadium. Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin won his second consecutive Eastern Regional 250SX Class Main Event.
Rockstar Energy Racing’s Davi Millsaps won the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot Award but was passed by Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart. Villopoto moved into third place on the opening lap. Villopoto passed Millsaps on Lap 3 but Millsaps answered back and moved into second place. Three laps later Villopoto moved around Millsaps and held the position. On the same lap, Stewart stalled his bike and Villopoto took over the lead.
Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey passed Millsaps for second place on Lap 7. On the final lap of the race, Millsaps crashed after the finish line jump and gave the number-three position to Stewart. Dungey held on for second and Stewart finished third.
Villopoto, who earned the 30th win of his career, became the first rider to win four races in Indianapolis and extended his points lead to nine.
“James [Stewart] was riding great tonight,” said Villopoto. “Lucas Oil Stadium has been great to me; it’s an amazing stadium and I love coming here. Ryan [Dungey] was able to make up some time on me here and there, but I just kept pushing hard until the end.”
Rockstar Energy Racing’s Blake Wharton won the Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot Award and was quickly passed by AG Motorsports’ Kyle Peters to start the Eastern Regional 250SX Class Main Event. GEICO Honda’s Wil Hahn started near the back of the pack and began to play catch up immediately.
After five laps, AJ Catanzero held down the number-five position but was passed by Musquin on Lap 11. Hahn worked his way past Catanzero on Lap 13 for fourth place. On Lap 14 of 15, Wharton crashed, allowing Musquin to take over the lead and Hahn to move into third place. Peters finished a career-best second place and Hahn finished third.
Hahn has a nine-point lead over Musquin in season point standings.
“I gave it away here tonight,” said Hahn. “I have to go home and do my homework to get back on top of the box. I am happy that I was able to work my way back to third, but need to win races.”
“We have been talking about confidence, and tonight I had it,” said Musquin. “I fought really hard, and I believed in myself. Anything can happen out there, and tonight was kind of lucky but I got the win.”
Racing resumes next weekend at Toronto’s Rogers Centre.

Hahn Moves Into 250SX Class Points Lead with Pivotal Win
ST. LOUIS, MO -March 2, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – A record 60,178 fans at the Edward Jones Dome watched Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto win his fourth Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, race. For the second consecutive race in the Eastern Regional 250SX Class Championship, GEICO Honda’s Wil Hahn was victorious, and he is now the new points leader.
Motoconcepts’ Mike Alessi jumped out to an early lead, winning the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot Award. Team Muscle Milk Honda’s Justin Barcia tucked into the number-two position on the opening lap with Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart in third. Championship points leader Davi Millsaps started in eighth place.
On Lap 1, Stewart moved into second place and advanced to the lead a few turns later as Villopoto assumed fourth. The race was stopped due to a red flag on lap three, and the field had to be re-started. Stewart, Barcia and Reed held down the top three positions after the re-start, and on Lap 5, Villopoto moved around Reed for third.
Villopoto continued his charge, passing Barcia for second place. During Laps 9-11 Stewart and Villopoto traded places several times, and Villopoto successfully moved into the leader position. After passing Stewart for second place on Lap 13, Barcia made a mistake a lost several spots. This allowed TwoTwo Motorsports’ Chad Reed to move into third place. Stewart finished second and Reed finished third.
Rockstar Energy Racing’s Millsaps holds a 12-point lead over Villopoto in season standings and Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey is in third.
“That was a good race for us, we’re slowly getting better out here,” said Stewart. “Villopoto caught me by surprise on the pass, but I was still able to keep it together and hold the second place spot. It was one heck of a race tonight. That’s what it’s about.”
“It was a crazy night out there,” said Villopoto. “I made a costly mistake on the first start, so I knew my work was cut out for me. I was able to make things happen on the second start and get out in front after some wild racing. It’s coming down to crunch time and we were all able to make it happen tonight.”
After winning the Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot Award, Hahn led Rockstar Energy Racing’s Blake Wharton, who moved into second place on Lap 1, and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson, who moved into third place on Lap 3.
After a mid-pack start, Wilson continued his charge past Wharton on Lap 7 to secure the number-two position. On Lap 9, Wilson was 1.5 seconds behind Hahn, patiently waiting to make his move. The two traded positions on Lap 12, but Hahn quickly regained the lead and rode to the second win of his career. Wilson finished second and Wharton finished third.
“It was a tough race,” said Wilson. “I didn’t make things easy on myself tonight with that bad start. I passed him [Hahn] once, but it wasn’t good enough.”
“That wasn’t an easy race,” said Hahn. “It was a tight race tonight with Blake [Wharton] pressuring me early and Dean [Wilson] came on strong late in the race. Tonight was awesome, and my family was here tonight to enjoy this with me.”
Hahn has a one-point lead over Wilson in season standings and Wharton is in third.

Stewart captures 450 main event & heat race victories at Georgia Dome
ATLANTA, GA – February 25, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – A packed house of almost 70,000 screaming Atlanta fans cheered for Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing’s James Stewart as he trounced the competition in qualifying, in his heat race and, ultimately, in the 450 class main at round eight of the 2013 AMA/FIM Supercross Championship at the Georgia Dome on Saturday night. With this stunning performance, Stewart became one of just three racers who have gone nine straight seasons with a win.
Not surprisingly, Stewart’s day in Atlanta started strong. The Yoshimura Suzuki rider posted the fastest qualifying times during the day’s practice and then he holeshot his eight-lap heat race and led all laps to take the win. Similarly, in the 450 class main event, Stewart took the holeshot on his Yoshimura Suzuki RM-Z450, rode flawlessly and led all 20 laps to the checkered flag. This Supercross victory marks Stewart’s 45th career premier class win.
“What can I say, we won,” said a very happy Stewart. “This whole season has been kind of crazy… It was basically a perfect day. I was fastest in qualifying, I holeshot the heat race, I holeshot the main event and I led every lap I was on. I’m not going to l lie, I was a little nervous because I haven’t been out there in a while. But I felt good and I was just trying to stay in my head and focus. I have to give it up to the Yoshimura Suzuki team. They’ve been working so hard and they’ve stood by me in this up-and-down year. Now I’m looking forward to building on this momentum and heading to St. Louis.”
Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing’s next event is the ninth round of the 2013 AMA/FIM Supercross Championships on Saturday, March 2nd, at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, MO.

ATLANTA, GA – February 23, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – In the largest attended Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, race in 2013, 68,987 fans watched Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart win his first 450SX Class race of the season. GIECO Honda’s Wil Hahn led wire to wire in tonight’s Eastern Regional 250SX Class Main Event en route to the first victory of his career.
Opening the 450SX Class Main Event with the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot Award, Stewart – for the first time this season – led all 20 laps on the way to the win. Villopoto started the race in second place and chased down Stewart for the duration of the race, but came up 1.468 seconds short and finished second. Rockstar Energy Racing’s Davi Millsaps, who started the race mid pack, moved into third place on Lap 2, and finished third.
Stewart has now gone nine seasons with a win, tying Jeremy McGrath and Chad Reed in this exclusive category. Villopoto moved into second place in season standings, and Millsaps has a 22-point lead in the championship.
“I mean, what can I say, we won tonight,” said Stewart. “It [means] a lot; this whole season has been going crazy and to get a victory and to get a start, it was almost a perfect day. I was fastest in practice, fastest in the Heat Race, I got the holeshot in the Main Event and led every lap. I’m not going to lie, I was a little nervous because I haven’t been out there in a while.”
Stewart is the fifth different winner eight races this season.
Hahn led the field of Eastern Regional 250SX Class riders across the Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot line in turn one as Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson and Rockstar Energy Racing’s Blake Wharton tucked in behind him for second and third, respectively. Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin made a pass for second place on Wharton on Lap 2.
Hahn opened the season with a third-place finish last weekend and with tonight’s win, he moved into second place overall. Wilson, who finished second tonight, still has the championship points lead. Wharton finished third and is third overall.
“I put in a lot of hard work, and it paid off here tonight,” said Hahn. “I stayed positive out there and rode a smart race. It’s an amazing feeling to get my first win here at the Georgia Dome in front of so many fans. This has been a long time coming.”
Former 250SX Class Champion Tim Ferry’s son Evan won tonight’s KTM Junior Supercross Challenge.
Monster Energy Supercross resumes next weekend at St. Louis’ Edward Jones Dome.
