Pirelli Backs Kyle Regal as Davi Millsaps Recovers from Injury

30 05 2012

WORTHAM, TX – May 29, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The 2012 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship Series made its way to Freestone Country Raceway in Wortham, Texas last weekend for round two of competition. Team JGRMX/ Toyota/ Yamaha’s Davi Millsaps suffered a practice crash last Thursday that resulted in deep bruising in his abdominal area. Despite qualifying for the race, Millsaps opted to sit out due to the pain he experienced during practice. His condition and ability to return will be evaluated this week.

Teammate Kyle Regal competed on behalf of both riders, riding on Pirelli’s Scorpion MX family of tires. “We welcome Kyle Regal to Pirelli and team JGRMX. Kyle is quickly showing promise having put points on the board in Davi’s absence for the two motos,” said Josh Whitmire, Pirelli North America Off Road Manager.

Regal started the first moto strong and led the field around the track for several turns before sliding out on the freshly watered surface. He regained position inside the top-10 when mechanical problems sidelined him for the second time. Regal finished 25th in the first moto. In the second moto, Regal started within the top-10 and held his eighth place position to the finish. His 25-eight scores awarded him 15th overall for the day.

The AMA Pro Motocross Championship is a 12-round tour with each event consisting of two thirty-minute two-lap heats, or ‘motos’ with 40 riders on the starting line. Combined outcomes from both motos determine results for the day, with finishing position in the second moto serving as a tiebreaker. Points are earned during each moto are counted towards the overall title, irrespective of the overall event podium.

Round three of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship will be at Thunder Valley Motocross Park in Lakewood, Colorado. Fuel TV will air the event live starting at 3:00 p.m. (EST). Allisports.com will also broadcast the first motos live on the web here.

Technical partner Team JGRMX/ Toyota/ Yamaha’s Davi Millsaps rode on Pirelli’s Scorpion MX family of tires to close out what was Pirelli’s best season in Supercross on record.

Pirelli’s race-bred Scorpion MX range covers all possible terrain applications with its six tread patterns, adequate from soft sand or mud through loose loam to hard-packed soils, all of which were regularly encountered through this year’s Supercross circuits.

The seventeen event Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship Series was full of ups and downs for the JGRMX/Toyota/Yamaha team this year as hard-charging James“Bubba” Stewart ended his season early with a hard wreck that fractured his hand.  However, Davi Millsaps was “Mr. Consistency” – chalking up podium after podium and eventually claiming second place for the 2012 Championship season.

“We’re quite pleased with the results we are getting and how things progressed [throughout the season],” stated Josh Whitmire, Pirelli’s off road racing manager. “The feedback has been great. 30 04 2012

Pirelli and JGRMX poised for strong season end behind Millsaps

SALT LAKE CITY, UT – April 30, 2012 (Motor Sports Newswire) – Racing in back-to-back open air stadiums, team JGRMX/ Toyota/ Yamaha riders Davi Millsaps and Gavin Faith had the weather on their side as the Salt Lake City skies remained blue and cloudless for round 16 of the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross series. Stewart Takes Winning Ways to Indianapolis

14 03 2012

Perfect Barcia Sets Sights on Win Number Five in Supercross Lites

AURORA, IL – March 12, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – After winning his first race of the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, season in Oakland six weeks ago, Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX’s James Stewart returned to the top step of the podium last Saturday in Daytona, gaining nine points on Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Ryan Villopoto’s championship lead. This weekend, the schedule returns to the Midwest and the Circle City of Indianapolis, with the 11th race of the season from Lucas Oil Stadium.

Media day is Thursday, March 15 from Noon-2:00 p.m. at the Lucas Oil Plaza.

Last weekend’s stop in Daytona presented an extremely wet night of action for all riders. Heavy rain resulted in a difficult track, placing an even greater emphasis on the start and line selection as the surface continued to deteriorate. Stewart was fast throughout the afternoon practice and carried it into the night program.

After a strong heat race performance in which he outran Villopoto, Stewart slotted into second behind teammate Davi Millsaps in the main event. After following Millsaps for a couple laps, Stewart carefully picked his spot on the track to make a move, assuming the lead on Lap 3 and gradually pulling away from the field for a seven-and-a-half second advantage at the finish.

Stewart’s victory was significant in that it allowed the former Monster Energy Supercross Champion to show the progress he and his Joe Gibbs Racing team have made in recent weeks. For the past two races, Stewart has shown tremendous speed, but encountered misfortune at both Atlanta and St. Louis, ultimately limiting his results. In Daytona, Stewart was able to secure the start he needed and put together 16 strong laps for a much-needed win. The triumphant effort highlighted a perfect night for the JGRMX effort, which celebrated its first ever 1-2 finish after Millsaps fended off GEICO Honda’s Kevin Windham for the runner-up spot.

For Villopoto, the difficult conditions almost resulted in a disastrous night for his hopes of capturing back-to-back titles. After news broke Friday afternoon that Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey was going to be out of the championship indefinitely due to injury, Villopoto’s closest championship challenger became Stewart. As a result, Villopoto entered Saturday with a 53-point cushion.

In the main event, Villopoto became entangled in a set of tuff blocks while fighting for position on the opening lap. As freed himself and attempted to remount his Kawasaki, the wet, muddy conditions forced him to lose control of his motorcycle and ultimately fall into the ground. Villopoto crossed the line in 17th and could have lost as many as 21 points to Stewart out front.

The reigning Supercross Class Champion fought valiantly through the field in the most challenging conditions of the season, working his way into the top 10 by Lap 5. By the time the checkered flag flew, Villopoto had moved into fifth, his worst effort of the season, but just his second finish off the podium in 2012. In the end, Villopoto lost just nine points to Stewart, and carries a 44-point advantage into Indianapolis.

Dungey’s unfortunate departure from the championship comes just one week after he posted a come-from-behind runner-up finish to Villopoto in St. Louis. An official announcement from Red Bull KTM revealed a broken collarbone that Dungey suffered prior to St. Louis, but was ultimately severe enough to require surgery this past week, eliminating him from competition in Daytona and for an estimated four to six weeks. While a championship is no longer in his sights, Dungey does have hopes of returning to competition before the conclusion of the Monster Energy Supercross season.

With a two-rider battle in store for the final seven races of the championship, Villopoto and Stewart will lead the field into Lucas Oil Stadium. Behind them, GEICO Honda’s Kevin Windham, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer, and Millsaps will engage in battle for the final spot on the championship podium.

Last season’s Monster Energy Supercross visit to Lucas Oil Stadium produced one of Villopoto’s most dominant efforts of the entire 2011 championship. The Kawasaki rider led all 20 laps of the main event, marking his fifth win of the season and generating a three-race winning streak at a pivotal point on the schedule.

In Eastern Regional Supercross Lites Class competition from Daytona, GEICO Honda’s Justin Barcia continued his perfect start to the 2012 season. The reigning Eastern Regional Champion won his fourth race of the year, in another near-perfect performance. Barcia grabbed the lead on the opening lap, but was given his toughest challenge of the season by Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett.

A fall by Baggett while in pursuit of Barcia helped the Honda rider open a lead at the midway point of the main event, but over the final few laps, Barcia was forced to hit his marks on the treacherous track as Baggett had closed to within less than a second. In the end, Barcia was able to pull away on the final section and stay undefeated.

For Baggett, it was his best effort of the season and could be the spark to make a charge over the second half of the Eastern Regional Championship. His Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki teammate Darryn Durham made an impressive charge from seventh to claim his second podium finish of the year.

The first Supercross race in Indianapolis was held on March 21, 1992, and Jeff Stanton won a Honda. This will be the 21st time the gates will drop in Indianapolis and the fourth time that Lucas Oil Stadium has been the host of the race. The first Lites class race was held March 21, 1992, and Jimmy Button won on a Yamaha.

SPEED will broadcast the Supercross class race LIVE at 7:30pm EST on March 17, 2012.

Tickets are available at the Lucas Oil Stadium Box Office, all Ticketmaster Outlets, charge by phone at (800) 745-3000, www.supercrossonline.com, or online at www.tickmaster.com. Freedom of Choice

MotoConcepts Racing Chooses Faction MX

MESA, AZ  – March 7, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Team MotoConcepts Racing (MCR) entered the 2012 Supercross season with something to prove, starting with the choice to avoid factory entanglements and the ability to develop their own program from scratch. “This is a great opportunity,” explained Tony Alessi, father of MCR team riders Mike and Jeff Alessi. “We want to take a MotoConcepts Racing 450 and try to develop a program that can beat the top talent and top equipment in the world. It’s not going to be easy by any means, but we’re up for the challenge.”

Being free to develop their own program means the Alessi clan can choose to run any components they feel will help them meet the challenge of beating the world’s best. “Given this freedom of choice, we are very proud of the fact MotoConcepts Racing chose Faction MX for their needs,” notes Faction MX General Manager Scott Highland. “They put every single component under the microscope and Faction MX passed their tests with flying colors.”

Historically a good starter, Mike Alessi has been at the front of the pack in several of his heat races and main events, culminating in dicing with Kevin Windham this past weekend in St. Louis. A couple of tough breaks, including a run-in with a tuff block knocked onto the track in Phoenix, has younger brother Jeff looking for redemption at the Ricky Carmichael-designed track at Daytona this weekend.

“The entire team should be easy to spot down in Daytona,” adds Highland. “They will be the riders out front in the iconic JT Racing gear and distinctive MotoConcepts Racing bikes. We are proud to be a part of this epic battle of the underdog team battling against mighty factory juggernauts.”

If you will be in Daytona this weekend, be sure to check out all the Faction MX-backed teams in the pits suggests Highland. In addition to the MotoConcepts Racing crew, Faction MX also supports James Stewart and Davi Millsaps on the JGRMX/Toyota/Yamaha team, JDR/J-Star KTM, Hart & Huntington and a couple other top Supercross teams. “Choose what the pros choose… Faction MX,” says Highland. “We support racing so that our customers can all be winners, benefiting from proven results and extensive race-testing of every single Faction MX part.”

What The Pros Choose! For everything cost-effective replacement valves for the privateer to the trick Ti components used by the top teams, Faction MX has your valvetrain solution and other racing needs covered. For all the details and a full range of applications, click on www.FactionMX.com

Pirelli Moves to Third Overall After Podium Finish

26 02 2012

Sold-Out Home Crowd at 2012 Atlanta Supercross

ATLANTA, GA – February 26, 2012 - (Motor Sports Newswire) – Two Pirelli riders finished in the top five in the main event of the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross at the Georgia Dome this evening in front of a sold-out crowd in Atlanta.  James “Bubba” Stewart and Davi Millsaps of the Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX team placed third and fourth respectively.

“It feels great being back in Atlanta,” said Stewart, who true to form, got the party started early as he emerged in the rider introductions impersonating the musician Prince with heartfelt rendition of the singer’s 1984 hit “Purple Rain”.  No stranger to the Georgia Dome, Stewart won the 2007 AMA Supercross main event here in 2007.  “I’ve got to give it up to Pirelli,” he continued. “They gave me some good tires.  We’re building, the team is working hard and we are getting better.”

The heat race was a Pirelli dominated affair with Stewart and Millsaps taking first and second, both utilizing Pirelli Scorpion MX family of tires to put in solid performances all night.

“It’s so rewarding to take home a podium finish in Atlanta,” commented Josh Whitmire, Off-Road Manager for Pirelli. “Our whole team was here supporting JGRMX, including engineers and the racing boss from Italy. The Georgia Dome hummed with electricity all evening; James and Davi rode their hearts out and more importantly, put points on the board.”

The East Coast swing of the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross series kicked off last weekend at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas and continued this week in Pirelli Tire North America’s own backyard – Atlanta – just 70 miles from the company’s North American headquarters in Rome, GA.

Round nine of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship will be held March 3rd at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri, airing live on SPEED at 7:00 p.m. (CST).

Pirelli and Team JGRMX Stand Fourth and Eighth in Overall Standing After Round 6 at Qualcomm Stadium

13 02 2012

SAN DIEGO, CA – February 13, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Calif. was host to 58,782 fans for round six of the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross series this weekend. After strong starts and non-incidental qualifying rounds, team JGRMX/ Toyota/ Yamaha riders James “Bubba” Stewart and David Millsaps easily advanced to the main event in sixth and eighth, respectively.

Halfway through the main event, Stewart passed Brett Metcalfe to claim third, with Millsaps trailing in seventh. On lap six, Stewart went down in the treacherous whoop section and became caught under his motorcycle, unable to free himself. Luckily he was not injured in the tumble, and Stewart was able to resume the race after a track worker unsnagged a piece of material from his riding pants. Millsaps finished seventh and Stewart salvaged a 15th place finish.
“We continue to make progress each week and am quite pleased as to how this organization is working as a team week in and week out,” commented Josh Whitmire, Pirelli North America Off Road Manager. “We look forward to racing in famous Texas Stadium next week. With eleven more races left in the series the championship is far from over.”

Round seven of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship will be held Feb. 18 at Cowboy Stadium in Dallas, Tex. The event will air live on SPEED at 9:30 p.m. (EST).
