Barcia Finishes on the Podium at the Daytona Supercross by Honda

12 03 2013

TORRANCE, CA – March 12, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Round 10 of the 2013 Supercross season took place Saturday at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. This year’s Daytona Supercross by Honda marked Honda’s 22nd year sponsoring this unique and historic event. Race fans filled the stands to witness an impressive showing by the Honda Red Riders, with four out of the top six aboard Honda CRF450Rs. Team Honda Muscle Milk rookie Justin Barcia took the podium with a third-place finish in his first Daytona 450 Supercross-class appearance. Muscle Milk-supported GEICO Honda’s Wil Hahn finished a solid second place at round four of the Eastern Regional 250 Supercross class.

450 Race
Despite the brutal track conditions, it was a noteworthy night for Barcia who nabbed his fourth podium appearance of the season with a third. Following a strong heat race win, Barcia spent the first half of the main event in second place. Succumbing to the pressure of another rider, Barcia settled into third and focused on staying consistent the remainder of the race.

“I am happy with how tonight went and love being up on the podium,” stated Barcia. “I want to win but both Ryans were riding really good tonight, so I’m happy just to be up here with them. The track was brutal, and felt like an outdoor race for me. I rode the best I could and had a lot of fun.”

Sitting in fifth on the opening lap, Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Trey Canard did his best to log consistent laps throughout the 20-lap main event. A few small mistakes moved him into sixth, which is where he finished. “It has been a rough couple of weeks for me,” stated Canard. “I gave all my effort but know that I have some things I need to work on. I’m happy to be healthy and moving onto the next race.”

Muscle Milk-sponsored GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac scored his career-best finish aboard his Honda CRF450R with a fourth-place overall. Despite a mid-pack start Tomac moved steadily through the field, making his way from ninth on the opening lap to fourth by the halfway mark, which is where he settled.

“I am really pleased with how tonight went,” stated Tomac. “I finally rode like I know how to and felt really comfortable on the bike. I didn’t get the best start but was able to relax and make the passes I needed to. I’m learning a lot this time on the 450 and definitely feel like I know what it takes to ride at this level.”

TwoTwo Motorsports’ Chad Reed put together an impressive performance in his heat after a first-lap crash left him at the back of the pack. He charged through the field and managed to go from last up to fifth, transferring him into the main. In the main, Reed grabbed a good start and quickly worked his way into the top five before a mistake at the halfway mark dropped him two positions. He was able to recover and finish fifth.

250 Race
Muscle Milk-backed GEICO Honda rider Wil Hahn continued to impress aboard his CRF250R, nailing down second and extending his points lead to five heading into the next round. Hahn started the night out strong, grabbing the holeshot in his heat and leading wire-to-wire. In the main event he came through the first turn in fourth before quickly making his way into third. With six laps remaining Hahn made his move on second, which is where he finished.

“I am satisfied with a second this weekend,” Hahn said. “The heat win really helped my confidence heading into the night, so that was cool. I got a fourth-place start in the main and just tried to stay consistent and capitalize on any mistakes that were made in front of me. I wanted to win but by the time I got into second Marvin (Musquin) was gone.”

Following a second-place finish in his heat, teammate Zach Bell went down twice in the main event to place 18th overall. “I had a really good heat race finishing second behind Wil (Hahn) so I wanted to work off that, but the main didn’t go as well as I had hoped,” said Bell. “I got a great start but came together with Dean (Wilson) and fell down. I made my way back up to eighth but towards the end fell again and finished 18th.”

Windham, a longtime competitor in the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, announced his retirement during opening ceremonies of the Anaheim Supercross on Saturday night at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif. The GEICO Honda rider made the decision to call time on his career after meeting with family, friends and his team.

“Without a doubt Kevin Windham will be remembered as one of the most popular athletes the sport has ever known,” said MX Sports Pro Racing President, Davey Coombs. “He was not only an exceptional rider, but a great role model who was always generous with his time and the fans. We truly appreciate his efforts, both on the race track as a competitor and off the track as a wonderful ambassador for the sport.”

At 34-years-old, Windham has been racing at the highest levels of the sport since 1994, when the mini-cycle prodigy turned pro after winning eight titles at the Loretta Lynn’s AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships. The time between Windham’s first National win and last win marks the longest gap in AMA Pro Motocross history.

Kevin Windham Retires at Anaheim 2

20 01 2013

By Keith Lair, Staff Writer
Daily News

ANAHEIM CA – January 19, 2013 – The AMA Monster Energy Supercross series main event at Angel Stadium took off Saturday.

For the first time in 20 years, a healthy Kevin Windham watched from the sidelines as Ryan Villopoto won the 20-lap race, his 25th win in the series.

“Oddly, I’m at peace with it,” 34-year-old Windham said. “I’m scared. I don’t know what I’m going to do. But I’m all right with that. I don’t want to do it anymore.”

Kevin Windham - click for high res

After the spotlight, lasers, smokescreens and fireworks of the opening ceremony extravaganza ended, Windham, who turns 35 next month, told the crowd of 37,789 he was finished. They seemed to sit in stunned silence by his decision.

“It probably seems quick and abrupt,” the Honda racer said. “But it’s something I have been contemplating since my big crash (last March) in Houston.

“I would love nothing more than to ride forever. This might seem to be a hasty decision, but I’ve been talking to a lot of people for a lot of months. I thought I would be able to come into the season and ride myself out of that funk and that mental hurdle I was having to overcome. With every passing lap it became more and more difficult to ride with the clarity I needed to be safe, fast, and successful.”

A crash in a heat last March fueled his choice. He collided with James Stewart Jr, separated both shoulders, broke his wrist and suffered a concussion. He then suffered another concussion in a crash at last October’s Monster Cup in Las Vegas.

He said he has suffered 25 concussions in 31 years of riding and racing motorcycles.

“I tried to work at a level of confidence to keep going,” he said. “It proved to be a larger hurdle than ever before. It felt a little bit more difficult because you have to work with these guys. It became very apparent.”

Windham said he wanted to continue racing, but on Saturday he made the final decision because he said he did not want to feel “bitter” about the sport.

“I wanted to ride at a point where I was 100 percent sure,” he said. “I was trying to find a way to get over the hurdles and it did not happen. It was not happening anymore.”

Windham, who still lives in his hometown of Centreville, Miss., is ancient in supercross circles. Series rookie Justin Barcia, who won last week in Phoenix, was not even 2 years old when Windham was in his first professional race.

Less than a handful of racers have ever competed in his sport at his age. His closest contemporary in the sport is Chad Reed, who is 30.

He began the season by finishing 10th in the season opener at Angel Stadium two weeks ago and was 11th last week in Phoenix. He entered Saturday’s race 11th in series points with 21.

He never won a series title but finished second three times, the last in 2010. He also was third in 2005. He finished 10th in points last year.

Windham won 18 races, 10th all time in the sport. His last win was May 1, 2010 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

But what might be more amazing is his consistency and lack of injuries in an injury-prone sport. He started 203 races. Only Mike LaRocco, his team manager, started more with 228.

Windham started 102 consecutive main events, starting in 2006 before his March 31 injury last year. He did not race any other supercross events after that crash.

Saturday was a crash-filled night of racing. Davi Millsaps crashed, finished fourth and still kept the series points lead. Barcia who was second in points, broke his suspension coming off a jump on the second lap.

Stewart, racing with a torn knee ligament, also went down in a crash.

Trey Canard was second and Chad Reed was third. Top qualifier Villopoto of Poulsbo, Wash., who took the lead on the fifth lap, is 11 points behind Millsaps.

“Once I got into the lead I was trying to click off laps and be consistent,” the Kawasaki rider said..”It seems like we have the ball rolling now.”

Eli Tomac of Cortez, Colo. won the 16-lap Lites race, his third win in as many tries. Ken Roczen was second and Cole Seeley third.

Villopoto Wins Again with Seventh Victory of 2012 Monster Energy Supercross Season in Toronto

25 03 2012

Barcia Grabs Fifth Win in Eastern Regional Supercross Lites Class

TORONTOMarch 24, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The 12th race of Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, hosted 47,010 Canadian enthusiasts on Saturday night, to boast its largest crowd to date inside the Rogers Centre. Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash., captured his series-leading seventh win of the season to extend his points lead and inch closer to defending his Supercross Class title. In the Supercross Lites Class, GEICO Honda’s Justin Barcia, of Ochlocknee, Ga., raced to his fifth win in six races of the Eastern Regional Championship.

As the gate dropped on the Supercross Class Main Event, Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Brayton, of Murrieta, Calif., grabbed the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot Award with Villopoto and Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX’s Davi Millsaps, of Murrieta, Calif., in tow. Brayton led the opening lap of competition, but Villopoto made what would be the winning pass a short time later.

Once he took over the lead, Villopoto quickly pulled away. However, a slight bobble in the whoops on Lap 3 allowed Brayton to close in briefly, but Villopoto rebounded and laid down the quickest laps of the evening. He took the checkered flag over nine seconds ahead of the field.

“Out of the first turn, it was just me and Brayton right off the bat,” said Villopoto. “I made some pretty big mistakes in the whoops. They were tough. We’ll go to Houston, where I think there’s a chance to wrap up the title. That’s the plan.”

Brayton recorded his second consecutive runner-up effort, while GEICO Honda’s Kevin Windham, of Centreville, Miss., made an impressive climb from a fifth-place start to grab the final spot on the podium in third.

Villopoto now holds a 79-point lead over Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn.

In the Supercross Lites Class Main Event, Barcia was the first out of the gate to grab the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot Award, while Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen, of Murrieta, Calif., and Eleven10 Mods Honda’s Alex Martin, of Millville, Minn., followed. Roczen took advantage early, moving past Barcia on the opening lap and setting a quick pace early.

The duo followed one another through the first few laps before Barcia took an inside line on Lap 3, making contact with Roczen in the process and pulling away. Behind them, an exciting battle for third ensued between Martin, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Darryn Durham, of Butler, Pa., and Rockstar Energy Racing Suzuki’s Blake Wharton, of Pilot Point, Texas. After a three-wide battle, Durham assumed the spot, but fell just a few laps later, allowing Wharton to take over the position.

Once out front, Barcia continued to pull away from the field, winning by over seven seconds. Roczen went unchallenged en route to a second-place finish, while Wharton held on for third.

“Right now I couldn’t be (happier),” said Barcia. “I got my first win here two years ago. My GEICO Honda was hooking up great. This track was really tough tonight. You had to be really smart and really smooth. I made a great pass for the lead and kind of just rode my own race from there.”

Barcia extended his lead in the Eastern Regional Supercross Lites Class standings to 28 points over Wharton.

Stewart Takes Winning Ways to Indianapolis

14 03 2012

Perfect Barcia Sets Sights on Win Number Five in Supercross Lites

AURORA, IL – March 12, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – After winning his first race of the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, season in Oakland six weeks ago, Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX’s James Stewart returned to the top step of the podium last Saturday in Daytona, gaining nine points on Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Ryan Villopoto’s championship lead. This weekend, the schedule returns to the Midwest and the Circle City of Indianapolis, with the 11th race of the season from Lucas Oil Stadium.

Media day is Thursday, March 15 from Noon-2:00 p.m. at the Lucas Oil Plaza.

Last weekend’s stop in Daytona presented an extremely wet night of action for all riders. Heavy rain resulted in a difficult track, placing an even greater emphasis on the start and line selection as the surface continued to deteriorate. Stewart was fast throughout the afternoon practice and carried it into the night program.

After a strong heat race performance in which he outran Villopoto, Stewart slotted into second behind teammate Davi Millsaps in the main event. After following Millsaps for a couple laps, Stewart carefully picked his spot on the track to make a move, assuming the lead on Lap 3 and gradually pulling away from the field for a seven-and-a-half second advantage at the finish.

Stewart’s victory was significant in that it allowed the former Monster Energy Supercross Champion to show the progress he and his Joe Gibbs Racing team have made in recent weeks. For the past two races, Stewart has shown tremendous speed, but encountered misfortune at both Atlanta and St. Louis, ultimately limiting his results. In Daytona, Stewart was able to secure the start he needed and put together 16 strong laps for a much-needed win. The triumphant effort highlighted a perfect night for the JGRMX effort, which celebrated its first ever 1-2 finish after Millsaps fended off GEICO Honda’s Kevin Windham for the runner-up spot.

For Villopoto, the difficult conditions almost resulted in a disastrous night for his hopes of capturing back-to-back titles. After news broke Friday afternoon that Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey was going to be out of the championship indefinitely due to injury, Villopoto’s closest championship challenger became Stewart. As a result, Villopoto entered Saturday with a 53-point cushion.

In the main event, Villopoto became entangled in a set of tuff blocks while fighting for position on the opening lap. As freed himself and attempted to remount his Kawasaki, the wet, muddy conditions forced him to lose control of his motorcycle and ultimately fall into the ground. Villopoto crossed the line in 17th and could have lost as many as 21 points to Stewart out front.

The reigning Supercross Class Champion fought valiantly through the field in the most challenging conditions of the season, working his way into the top 10 by Lap 5. By the time the checkered flag flew, Villopoto had moved into fifth, his worst effort of the season, but just his second finish off the podium in 2012. In the end, Villopoto lost just nine points to Stewart, and carries a 44-point advantage into Indianapolis.

Dungey’s unfortunate departure from the championship comes just one week after he posted a come-from-behind runner-up finish to Villopoto in St. Louis. An official announcement from Red Bull KTM revealed a broken collarbone that Dungey suffered prior to St. Louis, but was ultimately severe enough to require surgery this past week, eliminating him from competition in Daytona and for an estimated four to six weeks. While a championship is no longer in his sights, Dungey does have hopes of returning to competition before the conclusion of the Monster Energy Supercross season.

With a two-rider battle in store for the final seven races of the championship, Villopoto and Stewart will lead the field into Lucas Oil Stadium. Behind them, GEICO Honda’s Kevin Windham, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer, and Millsaps will engage in battle for the final spot on the championship podium.

Last season’s Monster Energy Supercross visit to Lucas Oil Stadium produced one of Villopoto’s most dominant efforts of the entire 2011 championship. The Kawasaki rider led all 20 laps of the main event, marking his fifth win of the season and generating a three-race winning streak at a pivotal point on the schedule.

In Eastern Regional Supercross Lites Class competition from Daytona, GEICO Honda’s Justin Barcia continued his perfect start to the 2012 season. The reigning Eastern Regional Champion won his fourth race of the year, in another near-perfect performance. Barcia grabbed the lead on the opening lap, but was given his toughest challenge of the season by Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett.

A fall by Baggett while in pursuit of Barcia helped the Honda rider open a lead at the midway point of the main event, but over the final few laps, Barcia was forced to hit his marks on the treacherous track as Baggett had closed to within less than a second. In the end, Barcia was able to pull away on the final section and stay undefeated.

For Baggett, it was his best effort of the season and could be the spark to make a charge over the second half of the Eastern Regional Championship. His Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki teammate Darryn Durham made an impressive charge from seventh to claim his second podium finish of the year.

The first Supercross race in Indianapolis was held on March 21, 1992, and Jeff Stanton won a Honda. This will be the 21st time the gates will drop in Indianapolis and the fourth time that Lucas Oil Stadium has been the host of the race. The first Lites class race was held March 21, 1992, and Jimmy Button won on a Yamaha.

Honda Starts the 2012 Season Strong

10 01 2012

TORRANCE, CA – January 10, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The 2012 season of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship series kicked off this past weekend at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, to a sold-out crowd of 45,050 race fans.

Anaheim marked the debut of Team Honda Muscle Milk, with Justin Brayton finishing fourth in the Supercross class on his CRF450R while teammate Trey Canard sat the event out recovering from a recent injury. Other Honda Red Riders also started the new season strong, including Chad Reed of TwoTwo Motorsports finishing in second, while Troy Lee Designs/ Lucas Oil/ Honda’s Cole Seely took the Supercross Lites win on his CRF250R, followed by GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac rounding out the podium in third.

After going down hard in the first corner of his heat race Brayton was forced to race the Last Chance Qualifier, where he finished first, allowing him to transfer to the main. Brayton spent most of the race in eighth, but surged with five laps to go, passing fellow Honda rider Andrew Short plus Ivan Tedesco and James Stewart to take fourth. “I found my groove on the track after a few practices and bike adjustments, and was pretty confident going into the night show,” said Brayton. “I had second gate pick in heat one, where I lined up right inside Villopoto. We got a pretty good start but something happened, sending his back tire into my front, causing me to high side and crash. After getting a good start and winning the LCQ, I boosted my confidence back up going into the main. I got a decent start in the main and was able to pick it up about halfway through, where I made my way to fourth.”

Reed put in a solid ride aboard his CRF450, starting with a win in his heat race and a second-place finish in the main. Going into the first turn Reed was in third place but he quickly passed Tedesco for second, which is where he stayed throughout the rest of the race. Fellow Honda riders Andrew Short and Kevin Windham also finished in the top ten with seventh- and eighth-place finishes.

Lites rider Cole Seely had an impressive start to the season with a first-place podium finish. “It’s great to come out on top at a race that gets so much hype,” said Seely. “This year my main focus is consistency and training. As long as I stay consistent each week I think I can win the championship.”

GEICO Honda rider Eli Tomac had a disappointing heat race but was able to come back and win the LCQ to move into the main, where he placed third on the podium. His teammate Will Hahn finished a respectable eighth place, while Travis Baker with Troy Lee Designs/ Lucas Oil/ Honda finished tenth.
