Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion to Celebrate the Life of Carroll Shelby through the 50th Anniversary of Shelby Cobra

18 05 2012

MONTEREY, CA – May 17, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – A war veteran who flew B-29s, an oil roughneck, a chicken farmer… Carroll Shelby was a man of diverse talents. But he will forever be remembered as an automotive icon who transformed sports car racing and brought American pride to the international motorsports stage.

This year’s Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, August 17-19, celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Shelby Cobra. But the featured marque honor becomes more poignant with the recent passing of the man who was simply known to friends as “Shel.”

The connection between Shelby and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca has long been intertwined. Shelby was a frequent participant in the formative years of the raceway, then named Laguna Seca. It was here, on October 20, 1960, that Shelby drove the No. 98 Tipo 61 Maserati “Birdcage” in the final race of his legendary driving career. Despite taking nitroglycerin pills to ease chest pains, he finished second after leading much of the race. That position, however, earned enough points for Shelby to clinch the 1960 USAC Sports Car Championship.

While his professional driving days were over, Shelby was just getting started. He rarely looked in his rear view mirror, preferring to always look ahead at his next great adventure. “Yesterday is history. Tomorrow a mystery. Live today,” he remarked in a 2009 interview.

Shelby adamantly said he was attending the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, an event that was always marked on his calendar, and was looking forward to reconnecting with former Shelby American engineers, drivers and employees.

Additional plans are underway to unite the Shelby legacy and spirit with the anniversary of one of the most iconic cars of all time, and certainly the most replicated. Among the highlights will be:

  • Dedicated race of 45 authentic CSX 2000/3000 competition cars
  • Shelby Cobra Heritage Display, presented by Ford Motor Company
  • Cobra Car Show on Pit Lane (Saturday for all authentic street and race Cobras)
  • Cobra Car Corral with hundreds of authentic, continuation and replica cars
  • Carroll Shelby special tribute laps
  • Picnic Q&A with a Shelby American team member
  • 350 GT Mustangs racing and in a dedicated car corral

“Carroll Shelby and his Cobras have been integral to our facility’s development. For a man who had his last professional race here and returned year after year for our historic car races, it is a privilege to host and present a public celebration of his life, his cars and his deep passion,” said Gill Campbell, CEO/general manager of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. “He will be missed roaming the paddock, but his spirit will forever live on.”

Advance general admission tickets start at $50 with a three day pass for only $130 that includes a complimentary souvenir magazine. Children 12 and under are free with a paying adult. Hospitality options begin at $200 per person.

For more information on the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion or to purchase tickets, call 800-327-7322 or visit www.MazdaRaceway.com.

Commenting on the auction, Leno said, “That was a lot of fun hanging out with Kenny, and I’m excited for the kids at Bailey’s Café in Brooklyn. That winning bid from Milton is going to buy a lot of supplies!”

2011 XDL Season Promises to be the Best Ever and Will Take Sports to New Level

2 02 2011

LOS ANGELES, CA – February 2, 2011 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – 2011 marks the sixth season in the life of the XDL Championship Series and it promises to be a big one that will grow the sport significantly in the US and in many key global markets. The schedule has been revamped to provide an optimal mix of event formats and event locations. The bulk of the schedule has been “urbanized” so XDL now runs in the middle of urban areas, on the same weekends as Daytona Bike Week, Arizona Bike Week and both the Laguna Seca and Indy MotoGP events. Remarked XDL founder Randy Grube: “We’ve had three years of experience with Indy now and it is by far our best format. So it made sense to restructure our schedule accordingly. Both Scottsdale and Monterey should be off the hook. The Scottsdale venue is in the middle of the entertainment district of downtown. You can’t get any more central than that. And Monterey is Monterey. It is already a big weekend and now we are part of it, in a really good location. What you will start to see more and more is that XDL will distinguish itself as mainstream motorcycle entertainment because we don’t take up a lot of room and can perform essentially anywhere. We can take the show to where the people are, not have to make them come out to a race track. I’m really looking forward to 2011.”

As part of our bigger mission XDL is taking responsibility for fostering the growth of the sport on all levels. XDL has introduced a new event format called “Freeride Festival” that is designed to be three to four days instead of two, provides more riding opportunities for every level of street freestyle rider, as well as more education on safety, bike preparation and riding. At both Daytona and Nashville, XDL will partner with the nascent AFS series and run an integrated schedule of pro and amateur competitions. And we will incorporate over 10 hours of freeride sessions that allow non-competitors the opportunity to ride in a safe and controlled environment under the supervision of a professional organization. The Freeride Festival format provides a growth structure for all levels of the sport, which will bring in many new participants and grow motorcycling in general.

In addition the Freeride Festival format will integrate more sportbike culture elements such as custom bikes, girls, music, wheelie machines and dynos. “The idea with the Freeride Festival format is to combine the best elements of a lifestyle event, with the best elements of a competition and parking lot riding” stated XDL co-founder Thomas Evans. “We are basically taking everything we know that works and putting it in one place so people can have more fun. Simple.”

2011 XDL Championship Series Schedule

  • Round 1: Daytona Beach, FL – During Daytona Bike Week – @ Daytona International Speedway – March 9 – 12
  • Round 2: Phoenix, AZ – During AZ Bike Week  – @ Downtown Scottsdale – April 1 & 2
  • Round 3: Nashville, TN – XDL Freeride Festival – @ Nashville Superspeedway – June 10 & 11
  • Round 4: Monterey, CA – With MotoGP – @ Downtown Monterey – July 22 & 23
  • Round 5: Indianapolis, IN – With MotoGP – @ Downtown Indianapolis – August 26 & 27

For marketing and sales info please contact Randy Grube at randy@xdlshow.com or 310-850-5715.

For additional info please visit http://www.xdlshow.com

XDL is the only championship of its kind and is the leader in reaching the core 20-year old sportbike demographic. Each XDL event features the world’s most skilled sportbike riders squaring off in seven unique competitions for over $10,000 in prize money. Since its inception in 2006 the series has built a global following in places as far off as India, Indonesia, China, Japan, Australia, France, Thailand and Eastern Europe, and in the process emerged as the fastest growing action sport in America.

Ben Bostrom and Chris Clark Auction for Rett Syndrome a Success

18 08 2010

LAS VEGAS, NV – August 17, 2010 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Pat Clark Motorsports would like to thank all of the fans that placed bids on the gear of AMA American Superbike racers Chris Clark and Ben Bostrom to benefit Rett Syndrome that recently concluded on Ebay.

The special edition leathers and bodywork made their AMA race debut at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca round of the AMA series and saw Ben Bostrom and Pat Clark Motorsports score their first win in the American Superbike class.

The auction began immediately following the SPEED telecast of the race on Sunday evening July 25 and concluded with over 2500 views and 60 bids on the gear.

“The feedback we received from everyone has been nothing but positive and we are happy we could pull off this unique event. We wish the thank the Ben Bostrom and Chris Clark fans who placed their bids and helped us do our part to support a great charity and assist in finding a cure for Rett Syndrome”, said Team Manager Ron Heben.

Rett Syndrome is the most physically disabling of the autism spectrum disorders. It strikes at random in early childhood, affecting little girls almost exclusively. Currently there is no treatment beyond supportive care, however recently Rett Syndrome was reversed in laboratory mice giving hope that a cure can be found to help the girls and women with Rett Syndrome. First recognized only 25 years ago, the prevalence of Rett Syndrome equals that of Cystic Fibrosis, Huntington’s and ALS but is vastly under funded in comparison to those disorders.
