45th Running of Hangtown Motocross Classic Draws Record Crowd
SACRAMENTO, CA – May 19, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – With a record event attendance of nearly 25,000 fans, the 45th running of the Red Bull Hangtown Motocross Classic proved to be one for the history books as the 2013 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, kicked off in Sacramento, Calif. on Saturday. After missing an entire season in 2012 due to injury, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto made a valiant return, sweeping both 450 Class motos atop one of the most stacked fields in the series’ recent history. Additionally, Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen claimed his first career 250 Class overall victory at Hangtown.
Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart, who missed most of the second half of the 2012 season, made a comeback of his own by grabbing the Motorcycle-Superstore.com holeshot in Moto 1, garnering one point toward the overall championship holeshot bonus of $25,000 in the 450 Class. However, keeping the lead wasn’t an easy task as three other former 450 Class Champions and several returning contenders chased the 2008 champ early on.

Villopoto took over the lead on the opening lap with Stewart and defending champion Ryan Dungey close in tow. The trio diced it out in the first half of Moto 1 but it was ultimately Villopoto who locked in the moto win, with Dungey in second and Stewart in third.
Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Trey Canard returned to the Hangtown Motocross Classic for the first time since his 250 Class championship-winning season in 2010. Canard made a statement early on as he jumped in behind the lead battle and even closed in on Stewart near the end of Moto 1. Just behind was the epic battle for fifth place between Canard’s teammate Barcia, BTO Sports/KTM’s Andrew Short, Lucas Oil Troy Lee Honda’s Malcolm Stewart, Smartop/MotoConcepts Mike Alessi and 450 Class rookie Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson. Malcolm Stewart, Alessi and Wilson experienced issues that dropped all three in the running order, while Canard and Barcia prevailed, rounding out the top five, with Short sixth.

James Stewart began Moto 2 in similar fashion to the first, grabbing the Motorcycle-Superstore holeshot once again and taking over the points lead in the season-long chase for the end-of-the-year cash prize. From there, Stewart engaged in a battle for the lead with Dungey, while Villopoto followed close behind. Near the halfway mark, Villopoto made his move to the front, leaving Dungey and Stewart to fight for the second place position. Dungey bested Stewart for the second place spot in Moto 2, giving the Minnesota native second overall for the day with a pair of second place finishes. Stewart, the 2012 Hangtown winner, scored (3-3) for third place overall. Villopoto went on to secure the first overall win of the 2013 season with a score of (1-1).
“Hangtown has always been a rough place for me so for the bike to feel like it did today was amazing,” Villopoto said. “I’m obviously happy with that and happy with how I rode. I feel like we’re in a really good place and it’s only going to get better from here.”

The 250 Class was set to be a showcase with a full lineup of returning contenders, including defending 250 Class Champion Blake Baggett. Fresh off a wrist injury, the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider had no reservations about getting to the front early on as he grabbed the Motorcycle-Superstore holeshot in Moto 1. However, the Red Bull KTM duo of Marvin Musquin and Ken Roczen quickly gained control of the lead. Musquin led three laps before his teammate commanded the lead for the remainder of Moto 1.

GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac began the first moto just outside of the top five but made his way into podium contention early on. Tomac first set his sights on Musquin and then made his way around Baggett to eventually secure second place in Moto 1. Baggett finished third, while Musquin took fourth and MyPlash Star RacingYamaha/Metal Mulisha’s Cooper Webb rounded out the top five in his Pro class debut.
In Moto 2, GEICO Honda’s Zach Bell grabbed the Motorcycle-Superstore holeshot but it was once again Roczen who jumped out front on the opening lap. Roczen set the pace early on and Baggett remained close in tow throughout the first half of the race. Roczen eventually put a gap on the defending champion in the final laps of Moto 2, going on to secure his first career victory in the 250 Class.
“Coming here, I didn’t really know what to expect because I sort of took some time to have fun during the week off [between supercross and motocross],” Roczen said. “It’s important to me to keep things fun but next week it’s time to put in some work and make my performance even better.”

Baggett’s score of (3-2) was enough to give him second overall for the day, while Tomac went (2-3) for third overall. Musquin captured a pair of fourth places to claim fourth overall, while GEICO Honda’s Zach Osborne rounded out the top five overall with a (9-5) score.
New Zealand’s Courtney Duncan took the opening round of the Women’s Motocross (WMX) Triple Crown by storm, sweeping both motos of the day in her WMX debut. Duncan bested Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Sayaka Kaneshiro, who finished second overall with a (2-3) score and Texas native Taylor Higgins rounded out the overall podium. Six-time WMX champion Jessica Patterson finished second in Moto 2 but bad luck in the first moto gave her 10th overall for the day.

The WMX Triple Crown returns to the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship June 8 for the GEICO Hangtown National in Mt. Morris, Pa. Round 2 of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship heads to Lakewood, Colo. for the Rockwell Watches Thunder Valley National next weekend, May 25.

Introducing the Motorcycle-Superstore.com Holeshot Championship
MORGANTOWN, WV – April 3, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – MX Sports Pro Racing and Alli Sports, a division of the NBC Sports Group, announced today a partnership with Motorcycle-Superstore.com as the Official Online Retailer of Motorcycle Parts and Apparel for the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing. Additionally, Motorcycle-Superstore.com brings an all-new Holeshot Championship program to all 12 rounds in 2013.
“This is an exciting step for Motorcycle Superstore,” explained Tim Clark, Director of Sports Marketing for Motorcycle Superstore. “The Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship is one of the premiere motorcycle race series in the world. This partnership will provide a great opportunity for our company, the race series and the racers. Motorcycle-Superstore.com has been the leader in online retail sales for over 15 years, plus we carry every major motocross and off-road brand. This partnership with Lucas Oil Pro Motocross is a natural fit.”
Motorcycle-Superstore.com will bring yet another exciting factor to the already impressive lineup of 2013 series sponsors in the form of a Holeshot Championship. Here is how it works: each Moto 1 holeshot winner gets one point and the Moto 2 holeshot winner gets two points. If the same rider holeshots both motos of the day, that rider would get an additional bonus point for a total of four points, thus creating a mini-championship inside the series championship. The final payoff will be a $25,000 check for the 450cc Class winner and $15,000 for the 250cc Class winner.
“We are very proud to welcome Motorcycle-Superstore.com as a big supporter of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship with their unique Holeshot Championship bonus program,” said Davey Coombs, President of MX Sports Pro Racing. “Their presence will be a positive and welcomed addition not only to the racers but the spectators who follow the action live at the events as well as the NBC broadcast and Alli Sports online viewers. We look forward to each time the start gate drops this summer.”

Ryan Dungey, Blake Baggett, and Jessica Patterson Lead Their Classes into Action
MORGANTOWN, WV – August 7, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Following a two-week break in action, the 2012 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, returns to the track on Saturday, August 11, with its anticipated return to Southwick, Mass., for the Moto-X 338 National.
Legendary Moto-X 338 will provide the most unique challenge of the 2012 season as the lone stop of the Nationals to feature sand, which provides an ever-changing surface sure to keep the world’s best riders at their best. This weekend marks the series’ 34th visit to Southwick, which has been the site of some of the sport’s most memorable moments.

At the championship’s previous stop from Washougal MX Park, Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey overcame a stiff challenge from MotoConcepts Suzuki’s Mike Alessi to take his sixth straight overall victory and maintain his dominant hold on the 450 Class point standings. While Dungey’s streaking ways continued for the overall win, his string of moto victories was halted at 10 after a captivating battle with Alessi in the opening moto.
Assuming the role of Dungey’s primary challenger for most of the season, Alessi’s breakthrough moto win served as the first for his MotoConcepts team while also ending a winless streak for the Suzuki rider that dated back to the 2010 season. With the anticipated return of Team Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart at Southwick, Dungey’s competition will arguably be stiffer than what he’s seen since taking over the points lead at the third round.
Last season at Moto-X 338, Team Yoshimura Suzuki’s Brett Metcalfe overcame heavy rains from incoming Hurricane Irene to claim his first career motocross victory. Behind him, both Dungey and eventual champion Ryan Villopoto were forced to overcome their own bouts of misfortune, ultimately tightening the championship. With both Metcalfe and Villopoto out due to injury, Dungey will look to secure his second 450 Class win at Southwick.

A mere 11 points separates the top two riders in the 250 Class, with Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett leading the way over GEICO Honda’s Justin Barcia. At Washougal, Barcia withstood strong performances by both Baggett and his teammate Eli Tomac to become the third rider this season to amass multiple victories.
This trio of riders have led the way in the division throughout the 2012 season, trading victories between one another at each round. With four races and eight motos remaining, the 250 Class title fight is far from over heading to a venue that Barcia considers to be one of his best tracks, having won at Moto-X 338 during the 2009 season when he was a rookie.
Last year at Southwick, Tyla Rattray secured his second consecutive win in the sand with a strong 2-1 outing.

The Women’s Motocross Championship will host its penultimate round of the 2012 season at Southwick, with a captivating battle for the title taking shape. Currently, Rockstar Energy Racing Suzuki’s Jessica Patterson holds a slim two-point lead over Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda’s Tarah Gieger, while defending champion Ashley Fiolek is making a hard charge in third aboard her Team Honda Muscle Milk machine, 11 points out of the top spot.
Despite suffering a broken hand prior to the RedBud round, Patterson has continued to fight through the pain on the track. However, in the two rounds since she suffered the injury, her championship advantage has reduced significantly from 33 points. While Fiolek has claimed back-to-back wins to claw her way into the championship picture, Gieger has put forth consistent rides to put herself in position to claim a first career title.
Last season at Moto-X 338, Fiolek secured the victory over Gieger, while Patterson experienced misfortune. With this familiar threesome of the fastest women on the planet all within striking distance of the coveted championship, Southwick is sure to play a pivotal role in the outcome of the season.

Moto-X 338, named after American Legion Post 338, which owns the property, has been hosting motocross events since the 1973 season. Just three years after the facility opened, the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship held its first event in Southwestern Massachusetts, Since then, Moto-X 338 has been a staple on the schedule and one of the most anticipated stops of the season. Affectionately referred to as the “sand box” and “the beach,” Southwick is a fan and rider favorite, year-in and year-out.
This year, Moto-X 338 and The Jimmy Fund are teaming up to give away 2012 Kawasaki KX450, along with other great products from Chaplin Kawasaki, New England Race Fuel, and Factory Connection. A $5 donation will provide an entry into a drawing that will take place on Saturday during the motos to determine a winner. Follow the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship social media outlets for more details or go to motocross338.org/jimmy-fund/.
The Moto-X 338 National will feature live broadcast coverage of the first 450 and 250 Class motos on FUEL TV and AlliSports.com, beginning at 1 p.m. Eastern. Tape-delayed coverage of the final motos of each class can be seen on NBC Sports Network on Tuesday, August 14 at 4 p.m. Eastern.

WASHOUGAL, WA – July 21, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, made its annual stop in the Pacific Northwest on Saturday, hosting the eighth round of the season from Washougal MX Park. For the sixth consecutive race, Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., claimed the overall win, but not without some pressure from his closest title contender – MotoConcepts Suzuki’s Mike Alessi, of Victorville, Calif. In the 250 Class, GEICO Honda’s Justin Barcia, of Monroe. N.Y., raced to his second victory of the 2012 season, following a strong and consistence outing.
Alessi grabbed the holeshot in the opening moto of the 450 Class and set a fast pace early on, with Jeff Ward Racing Kawasaki’s Josh Grant, of Riverside, Calif., and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer, of Rupert, Idaho, in tow. Following a fourth-place start, Dungey quickly began to move his way forward and positioned himself behind Alessi on the second lap.
Dungey soon eliminated his deficit to Alessi and applied pressure for the lead. After several attempts to pass, Dungey lost traction on Lap 12 and fell, remounting in second, but dropping nearly seven seconds back. Just two laps later, Dungey was once again on Alessi’s rear wheel, but the Suzuki rider withstood the advances yet again to claim a hard-earned victory, ending Dungey’s 10-moto winning streak.
In Moto 2, Dungey made short work of the field, securing the holeshot and quickly asserting himself as the rider to beat by establishing a multi-second lead on the opening lap. The KTM rider led all 15 laps to tie Alessi in points for the day, but secured the tiebreaker over his rival by virtue of the better second-moto result.
“It was fun (out there),” said Dungey, who won for the fifth straight year at Washougal. “I was riding in second (behind Alessi) and I was up on him, but I had a hard time making the pass. I had a (moto-winning) streak going and I was happy with it, but at the end of the day, winning every moto doesn’t get (the championship) done. If anything, it was a kick in motivation to go a little harder, which I did in the second moto.”
Alessi’s runner-up effort (1-2) was highlighted by his first moto win since the 2010 season and the inaugural moto victory for the Spokane-based MotoConcepts team. Team Chaparral Honda’s Andrew Short, of Smithville, Texas, took the final spot on the podium in third (3-4).
Dungey’s lead in the 450 Class standings remains at 80 points over Alessi.
In the 250 Class, Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin, of France, set the tone early in the first moto by capturing the holeshot and opening up a comfortable advantage over the field. Musquin continued to lead for the majority of the moto with his sights set on a first-career moto win, but was passed by Barcia on the eleventh lap. Barcia fended off his teammate Eli Tomac, of Cortez, Colo., the rest of the way, while Musquin followed in third.
In Moto 2, Barcia took advantage of a strong start to open up a slight lead over points leader Blake Baggett, of Grand Terrace, Calif., who was looking to overcome his own misfortune in the opening moto. The duo paced one another for nearly the entire moto before Baggett made a late pass on Lap 13 to steal the win and secure a spot on the overall podium.
Barcia’s second-place effort in the final moto was enough to claim the overall win, with Tomac in second (2-3) and Baggett in third (6-1).
“The first moto was awesome, I had to ride really hard,” said Barcia. “I just kind of got sick getting roosted, so I made the pass. In the second moto, I got a good start and was riding great, but Blake (Baggett) pressured me and I ended up losing my front end with a couple laps to go. The last two years here I’ve really struggled, but after today I’m happy.”
After losing valuable points in the first moto, Baggett’s win in Moto 2 minimized his total points lost to seven, giving him an 11-point lead heading into the next round.
“I just made a mistake and tried going faster than I could go,” said Baggett. “I had a couple falls, so I just went back and regrouped. I made some changes between motos and I guess they worked.”
The Women’s Motocross Championship was also in action on Saturday, with the sixth of eight rounds this summer. After suffering a broken hand just a few weeks ago, points leader Jessica Patterson, of Tallahassee, Fla., was looking to maintain her advantage aboard her Rockstar Energy Racing Suzuki.
At the end of two motos, Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Ashley Fiolek, of St. Augustine, Fla., prevailed with her third win of the season (1-1), while Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda’s Tarah Gieger, of Puerto Rico, finished second (3-2), and MotoConcepts Honda’s Mariana Balbi, of Brazil, finished third (4-3). Patterson was in position to claim the overall win, leading the early portion of the second moto, but misfortune relegated her to a fourth-place finish overall (2-8). However, Patterson maintains possession of the points lead, holding just a two-point advantage over Gieger.
The 2012 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship will take a break from competition and resumes August 11, with round nine from Moto-X 338 in Southwick, Mass.

Tomac Capitalizes for Third 250 Class Win of the Season
MILLVILLE, MN – July 14, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, made its lone visit to the Land of 10,000 Lakes on Saturday with its seventh round of the season from Spring Creek MX Park. After another dominant outing, Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., took his fifth consecutive victory of the summer in front of the hometown crowd, sweeping the day’s pair of 450 Class motos. In the 250 Class, GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac, of Cortez, Colo., took advantage of the misfortune experienced by points leader, and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider, Blake Baggett, of Grand Terrace, Calif., to claim his third win of the season.
After coming out of the gate at the front portion of the field, Dungey settled into fifth place at the conclusion of the opening lap of the first 450 Class moto. As the KTM rider began to work his way forward, MotoConcepts Suzuki’s Mike Alessi, of Victorville, Calif., assumed the lead and opened a small gap over the field.
Dungey picked off one rider per lap and took over second place on Lap 3, and then set his sights on Alessi. Dungey gradually eliminated his deficit to Alessi and passed the Suzuki-mounted rider on Lap 6, quickly establishing an insurmountable advantage and taking the win.
In Moto 2, Dungey wasted little time in asserting himself, capturing the holeshot and leading all 16 laps of competition. He crossed the finish line nearly 49 seconds over Alessi, in second, and celebrated with the supportive crowd. Dungey has become accustomed to winning at his home track at Spring Creek, standing atop the podium for the last five years. Today he secured his third straight victory at the facility in the 450 Class to go along with his back-to-back triumphs as a 250 Class rider during the 2008 and 2009 seasons.
“I enjoy coming back (to Spring Creek), I spent a lot of time riding here as kid,” said Dungey, who has won an impressive 10 consecutive motos during his dominant run. “To get a win was great, not just for me but the team as well, especially since everyone was here to watch. I approach every race the same as the one before, regardless of points. I’ve said it a lot; there’s a lot of racing left and you have to be ready for each race itself. We just come in and hope to accomplish what we want to accomplish, always looking to improve.”
Alessi finished second overall (3-2) for his fifth podium in seven rounds, while Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer, of Rupert, Idaho, finished third (2-3).
Dungey extended his lead in the 450 Class standings to 80 points over Alessi.
In the 250 Class, Baggett was targeting his third consecutive overall win and got the day off to a strong start in the opening moto. After crossing the line in eighth at the conclusion of the first lap, Baggett stormed through the field, climbing his way into a four-way battle at the front of the field by Lap 5 with GEICO Honda’s Justin Barcia, of Monroe, N.Y., Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen, of Germany, and Tomac.
The four riders paced each other for several laps, often alternating positions, but Baggett eventually moved into the lead on Lap 12, surpassing his rivals and cruising to the win.
In Moto 2, Baggett once again put himself in winning position, coming out of the gate in third and passing Tomac for the lead on Lap 6. However, Baggett encountered misfortune on the following lap, losing rear traction and dropping to seventh in the running order.
Tomac capitalized on Baggett’s fall and extended his lead over Barcia in second, eventually winning the moto and securing the overall.
“That first moto was a barn burner, we all just went at it,” said Tomac. “I needed some better starts and I got those this weekend. Blake and I were going at it (in the second moto), but he made a mistake. I was kind of lucky he fell where he did. I just took it from there.”
Barcia posted back-to-back runner-up efforts to finish second overall, while Baggett rebounded to finish fourth in the second moto and claim third overall (1-4).
Although he missed an opportunity to gain some ground in the championship standings, Baggett still holds an 18-point lead over Barcia.
The 2012 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship continues next Saturday, July 21, with round eight from Washougal MX Park in Washougal, Wash., and the Peterson CAT Washougal National.
