Online Race Entry Available for AMA Vintage Grand Championships

7 03 2013

PICKERINGTON, OH – March 7, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The American Motorcyclist Association has launched online race entry for the 2013 AMA Vintage Grand Championships. The amateur vintage racing event takes place during AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, July 19-21, at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

Competitors in all disciplines can access online pre-entry at www.amavintagemotorcycledays.com > Register to Race. Supplemental rules, class structures and a weekend schedule are also available. In addition, for those who wish to mail in physical entries, downloadable forms are provided, as well.

The AMA Vintage Grand Championships include amateur championship racing in motocross, hare scrambles, trials and roadracing at the expansive Mid-Ohio complex. The dirt-track event, which is round 10 of the AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series, will be held at the nearby Ashland County Fairgrounds in Ashland, Ohio.

All proceeds from the AMA Vintage Grand Championships are donated to the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame to support the Hall of Fame’s mission of celebrating the accomplishments of motorcycling’s brightest stars. Pre-entry fees for off-road and motocross are $40 per class. Dirt track pre-entry is $30 per class. Roadrace pre-entry is $80 for the first class and $70 for each subsequent class (per day).

Youth racers more than 12 years old are welcome in motocross, hare scrambles, trials and dirt-track competition at the AMA Vintage Grand Championships. Per Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course rules, riders must be 14 or older to compete on motorcycles with displacements greater than 250cc. Roadrace competitors must be 16 or older in all classes.

In addition, new for 2013, all riders under the age of 18 must pre-register. Post entry is not allowed for riders under 18.

“Vintage racing is some of the most fun you can have on two wheels,” said AMA Vice President of Operations Jeff Massey. “It’s laid back, unintimidating, relatively inexpensive and all about enjoying yourself on your motorcycle. We’re excited to offer the AMA Vintage Grand Championships to give both casual racers and serious title contenders a venue to have fun and compete for AMA national championship points and No. 1 plates.

“And, of course, 100 percent of every race entry goes to the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame to preserve the legacy of motorcycling for future generations,” said Massey.

The AMA Vintage Grand Championships feature the final rounds of the AMA Vintage Motocross and AMA Vintage Hare Scrambles National Championship Series. AMA national champions will be crowned in those disciplines at the conclusion of the event.

The Ashland dirt-track event is a round of the AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series, which concludes later in the year, and competitors will earn points toward their series awards in that discipline.

For both vintage trials and vintage roadracing, the AMA Vintage Grand Championships serve as the singular amateur national championship event, and the class winners in these disciplines at the AMA Vintage Grand Championships will be recognized with AMA national No. 1 plates.

In addition to the championship points and titles on the line, riders in designated “A” classes will vie for the honors of AMA Track Racing Vintage Grand Champion, AMA Off-Road Vintage Grand Champion and AMA Vet/Senior Vintage Grand Champion. Those who compete in select roadracing and dirt-track classes will earn points toward the track-racing award, while motocross, hare scrambles and trials riders will earn points toward the off-road awards.

A fundraiser for the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, the AMA Vintage Grand Championships are part of AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, which features classic motorcycles of all makes and styles, and honors the riders who made them famous. In addition to vintage roadracing, motocross, hare scrambles, trials and dirt-track, AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days includes North America’s largest motorcycle swap meet, bike shows and awards, stunt shows, demo rides of current production bikes, and seminars on a number of topics by noted motorcycling experts.

AMA announces AMA Vintage Motocross and AMA Vintage Hare Scrambles National Championship Series

24 01 2013

PICKERINGTON, OH – January 24, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Vintage motorcycles and the men and women who love to race them will see more track time this summer in the AMA Vintage Motocross and AMA Vintage Hare Scrambles National Championship Series. The new series will kick off on May 4-5 in Athens, Ohio, and wrap up at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days in Lexington, Ohio, on July 19-21.

“Vintage racing is an important part of the AMA’s past, present and future, and I’m pleased that we are able to expand our vintage motocross program into a series,” said AMA Motocross Manager Kip Bigelow. “Our members have expressed considerable interest in more vintage racing and we’re pleased to partner with an experienced promoter. I’m looking forward to some great racing on the track, as well as some invigorating bench racing and reminiscing about old times that goes hand-in-hand with the sport.”

Each round will feature two days of racing: vintage hare scrambles and motocross competition on Saturdays and post-vintage hare scrambles and motocross on Sundays.

“Few pastimes are as liberating, exciting and fun as riding a dirtbike fast through the woods — just like when we were kids,” said AMA Off-Road Manager Chuck Weir. “Vintage motorcycle competition remains one of the most accessible, affordable and least-intimidating ways to get involved in motorsports racing. I encourage all AMA members with a vintage motorcycle in their sheds to consider battling for an AMA Vintage National Championship in 2013. Who says you can’t be young again?”

AMA-chartered promoter Bart Newman from Log Road MX will serve as the series organizer in addition to hosting the second round on June 1-2.

“The chance to be a part of the AMA Vintage National Championship Series has been in the works for a couple years,” said Newman. “Assembling a group of fellow promoters with a passion for the sport was paramount in making this series a success, and we have done that. This four-race series incorporates hare scrambles, vintage motocross and modern support classes for riders from 10-years old to 100-years old. I am super pumped to be a part it.”

The AMA Vintage Motocross and AMA Vintage Hare Scrambles National Championship Series expand the AMA Vintage Grand Championships, held each summer at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days. Previously, AMA-sanctioned vintage racing followed the AMA Grand Championship model, which has a long and proven history with premier events such as the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn’s and the Dirt Track Grand Championships.

The vintage motocross and hare scrambles series join the AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series, which is in its third year and also features a round at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days.

Motorcycling field meet coming to AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days

26 06 2012

PICKERINGTON, OH – June 26, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The field meet is one of motorcycling’s most iconic activities, when riders get together and display their riding skills in an organized setting. This July 20-22, the American Motorcyclist Association will feature these classic games at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, featuring Rockers and Mods, held at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

The AMA Classic Field Meet Challenge will take place on the infield of the roadrace course on Friday, July 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Saturday, July 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday, July 22, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. ABATE of Ohio will oversee registration and officiating. Registration will take place on site each morning.

“The main goal of all field meets is the same: for everyone to have fun,” said AMA Director of Operations and AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Jack Penton. “Activities are designed to be as entertaining as they are challenging. These aren’t trials contests! You certainly don’t need a particular type of motorcycle, and you don’t need any special skills — beyond a healthy confidence in your own ability to maneuver your motorcycle.”

Individual events will include activities such as a barrel race, a balloon toss, a slow race, Bite the Weenie, Ride the Plank and Whack the Murphy. Other games will be included, as well. The winning riders of each event will receive a medallion for each day of competition.

“I’d like to extend a big thanks to ABATE of Ohio for managing the field meet this year,” Penton said. “The AMA Classic Field Meet Challenge will be a blast for both spectators and participants. Whether you’re riding in the event or just want to figure out what Whack the Murphy is all about, make sure you check out the action on the infield at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days.”

There is no extra cost to register and participate in the AMA Classic Field Meet Challenge, but a small donation to the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame is encouraged. Riders will need to ride their own motorcycle or scooter and wear appropriate gear (helmet, long pants and eye protection are mandatory). Motorcycles or scooters can be from any era; they do not need to be vintage to participate.

Questions about the field meet can be directed to AMA Road Riding Manager Dave Hembroff at dhembroff@ama-cycle.org.

With proceeds supporting the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days is the country’s premier celebration of vintage motorcycles and motorcycling heritage. In addition to the AMA Classic Field Meet Challenge, the event includes amateur national championship roadracing, demo rides of current street and off-road motorcycles, motocross, hare scrambles, trials and dirt-track in vintage classes. The weekend also features North America’s largest motorcycle swap meet, bike shows and seminars on a number of topics by noted motorcycling experts.

This year’s AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days will celebrate the classic “Rockers and Mods” two-wheeled subculture that is experiencing a popular resurgence in America. Activities will shine a spotlight on British café-racer motorcycles and Italian metal-bodied scooters made popular by the self-described Rockers and Mods of the early 1960s.

The grand marshal this year is AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame member and noted designer Craig Vetter, whose contributions to motorcycling range from the iconic Windjammer fairings and the Triumph X-75 Hurricane to the Mystery Ship limited-production, high-performance motorcycles and a number of high-profile motorcycle fuel-economy contests.

Tickets for AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days can be purchased at www.midohio.com. More information about AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days can be found at www.amavintagemotorcycledays.com.

Aermacchi/Harley-Davidson Club to be showcased as Classic Club at 2011 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days

25 05 2011

PICKERINGTON, OH – May 24, 2011 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is pleased to announce that the Aermacchi/Harley-Davidson Club has been selected as the Classic Club for 2011 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, July 22-24, at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

“Motorcycling history is rich with distinctive relationships that produced some of the most interesting examples of motorcycle technology,” said Jack Penton, AMA director of operations and Motorcycle Hall of Famer. “The Aermacchi/Harley-Davidson line of 1961-1978 certainly fits that description, and we’re pleased to provide attendees of AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days an opportunity to appreciate these special motorcycles.”

The selection of the Classic Club complements the announcement of Kawasaki as the 2011 Marque of the Year for AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days. By honoring a Classic Club, the AMA continues a long-standing tradition of recognizing the many brands that are represented at America’s grandest celebration of motorcycle heritage.

“The legendary Aermacchi/Harley-Davidson Sprint CRTT flat-single racers were born in 1961 when the Italian factory Aermacchi entered into a financial relationship with Harley-Davidson,” said John Basore, who is working with the AMA to organize the Classic Club display. “The union led to the production of 65cc to 350cc street and racing motorcycles for AMA-sanctioned lightweight competition. AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days will be a rare opportunity for fans to celebrate the 50-year anniversary of the birth of this unique brand.”

As this year’s Classic Club, Aermacchi/Harley-Davidson will be featured in a special display tent on the grounds of Mid-Ohio, and visitors will have a chance to see bikes, memorabilia and more relating to the rare motorcycles.

Those interested in displaying their vintage Aermacchi/Harley-Davidson or brand-related memorabilia as part of the Classic Club display can contact Basore at (336) 245-3594 or jfbasore@triad.rr.com.

Staged at the world-class Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days features vintage and post-vintage competition in motocross, trials, hare scrambles, roadracing and dirt track. In addition to demo rides of current production bikes, the event includes North America’s largest motorcycle swap meet, educational seminars, bike shows, motorcycling seminars, the new product Manufacturers’ Midway, and club corrals featuring marque and regional clubs.

Proceeds from AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days benefit the Motorcycle Hall of Fame, which is located on the campus of the AMA in Pickerington, Ohio. The mission of the Hall of Fame is to celebrate, elucidate and preserve the rich tradition of motorcycling in America. Its exhibits honor the distinguished men and women whose competitive spirit, passion, vision and entrepreneurship have played a vital role in shaping the sport, lifestyle and business of motorcycling. 3 03 2011

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – March 3, 2011 – (Motor Sports Newswire) -  Green Savoree Racing Promotions, through newly formed, wholly owned subsidiary Green Savoree Mid-Ohio, LLC, has purchased Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and The Mid-Ohio School from Dublin, Ohio-based TrueSports, Inc.

Green Savoree, which also owns and operates the Honda Indy Toronto and Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, will assume operations of the Lexington, Ohio motorsports facility and performance driving and riding school immediately, retaining TrueSports’ offices and staff and promoting Mid-Ohio’s 2011 schedule of spectator and non-spectator events and school course dates. Other terms of the sale were not announced.

“Properties like Mid-Ohio don’t come on the market every day,” said Green Savoree Co-Owner, President and Chief Operating Officer Kevin Savoree. “It was a great opportunity to invest in a property with a great history and tradition that, like us, has deep roots in sports car and Indy car racing. It was also a chance to extend our relationship with Honda, which is a longtime partner of Mid-Ohio and our other properties.”

“This is a positive and very exciting deal, and one that serves all our interests,” said TrueSports, Inc. President Michelle Trueman Gajoch. “Kim (Green) and Kevin have a great track record as team owners and event promoters, and will bring a new energy and perspective to the operation. That’s great news for our associates and fans and for the many loyal partners we’ve been doing business with for so many years. They’re the right people to steward the track through its next 50 years.”

Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course will celebrate its 50th season of racing in 2011. The track’s golden anniversary schedule is set to include the Vintage Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio, June 24-26; Honda Super Cycle Weekend presented by Dunlop Tire, July 8-10; AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, July 22-24; Mid-Ohio Sports Car Challenge/The Honda Indy™ 200 at Mid-Ohio, August 5-7; NASA Championships presented by Toyo Tires, September 9-11; and EMCO Gears Classic presented by KeyBank, September 16-18. The Mid-Ohio School has nearly 180 course dates currently scheduled for 2011 beginning in March, and the track and school both have private events scheduled throughout the year.

“I’ve been racing at Mid-Ohio since 1981 and have seen the pride Michelle and her team have put into the facility and the tradition they’ve established,” said Green Savoree Co-Owner, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Kim Green. “It’s a legacy we’ll carry on with great pride.”

The Mid-Ohio facility was built in 1962 by Mansfield, Ohio businessman Les Griebling as a place for sports car racing. The track was purchased by entrepreneur and racing enthusiast Jim Trueman in 1982. Trueman invested millions in the facility, luring major series like CART and IROC and raising the track’s profile as one of the country’s premier road racing venues.

“In addition to continuing to develop this fantastic facility, we look forward to building relationships with the track and school’s many longtime partners and attracting even more of the exciting events Mid-Ohio’s loyal fans have come to expect,” Savoree added. ”We’re eager to write the next chapter in the 50-year history of North America’s largest privately held road course.”

A park-like, 330-acre complex, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course features a permanent road-racing circuit with two primary configurations: a 2.4-mile, 15 turn course and a 2.25- mile, 13-turn circuit. The track, which is located 60 miles north of Columbus and 75 miles south of Cleveland, has been called the most competitive in the U.S. and annually hosts a diverse lineup of locally, regionally and nationally sanctioned racing events for amateur, club and professional drivers and riders.

The Mid-Ohio School provides professional driving and riding instruction to drivers and motorcyclists of all skill levels. The school’s 20 different programs vary from Defensive Driving, Performance Driving and Racing programs on the automobile side to Beginning, Experienced, Advanced Cornering and Performance Track Riding programs on the motorcycle side. Students enjoy classroom sessions, skill drills, expert personal instruction and lapping on the same track that challenges the world’s top racers. The school has graduated more than 41,000 students since its inception in 1993.

On location at the Husqvarna Marque of the Year tent will be a full complement of 2010 Husqvarnas, including the street, off-road, motocross and dual-sport lineups. Plus, select 2011 Husqvarnas will be on display, including the already announced WR150, TE630 and SM630.

“The 2011 Husqvarna line is one of our biggest rollouts in years, and represents the brand’s return to dominance on the U.S. off-road landscape,” said Scot Harden, national sales and marketing manager for Husqvarna Motorcycles NA. “In addition to these exciting, cutting-edge Husqvarna motorcycles, some of Husqvarna’s talented off-road stars will be in attendance to sign autographs and talk with fans. We’re excited to give motorcyclists a close-up look at the current lineup and a peek into the future.”

Among the early release 2011 models is the all-new WR150, which features a chrome-moly frame and a 144cc engine. As an off-road model, it sports lights and off-road-tuned suspension — a 50 mm Marzocchi fork up front and a remote-reservoir Sachs shock out back. Black Excel wheels accent the sharp Husqvarna red/white color scheme.

The 2011 TE630 and SMS630, introduced in February, are the off-road and supermoto versions powered by Husqvarna’s versatile 600cc four-stroke single.

Husqvarna is the Marque of the Year, and legendary desert racer Malcolm Smith is the grand marshal at 2010 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days. Smith raced into prominence on the brand in the late 1960s and early 1970s, competing in Baja and the International Six Days Trial.

AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days features vintage and post-vintage competition in motocross, trials, harescrambles, roadracing and dirt-track. In addition to demo rides of current production bikes, the event includes North America’s largest motorcycle swap meet, educational seminars, bike shows, the Federal Companies/Allied Used Bike Corral, motorcycling seminars, the new product Manufacturers’ Midway, and club corrals featuring marque and regional clubs.

Proceeds from AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days benefit the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. The goal of the Hall of Fame, located on the campus of the AMA in Pickerington, Ohio, is to honor the distinguished men and women whose competitive spirit, passion, vision and entrepreneurship have played a vital role in shaping the sport, lifestyle and business of motorcycling.
