Suzuki Celebrates A Championship And Overall Successful AMA Road Racing Season

8 10 2010

BREA, CA – October 7, 2010 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – American Suzuki Motor Corp. is proud to congratulate all of the racers who took the powerful GSX-R lineup of motorcycles to the top of the AMA Pro Road Racing circuit in 2010, including Martin Cardenas who earned the Daytona SportBike Championship aboard his GSX-R600. Suzuki had a great 2010 and took home the Manufacturer’s Cup in both the AMA American SuperBike class with the strength and the power of the GSX-R1000 on the racetrack, as well as in the Daytona SportBike class with the championship-winning GSX-R600.

Martin Cardenas and his M4 Monster Energy Suzuki GSX-R600 took the championship at the series finale at Barber Motorsports Park in Leeds, Alabama, in the hotly contested Daytona SportBike class. His win in the second race of the doubleheader gave him enough points to edge out Danny Eslick and his Geico Powersports RMR Suzuki GSX-R600, who finished second in the class. Cardenas won a total of nine races in 2010 and was a consistent threat to others’ championship hopes in the series. Eslick took his Suzuki to three wins during the season and was on the podium far more often than not in the highly competitive class. The GSX-R600 was a venerable threat on the track to all other competitors, and overall the machine won nine races and was on the podium a total of 25 times.

In the SuperBike class, Tommy Hayden took his Rockstar Energy Suzuki GSX-R1000 to second place overall in the championship, and with the strength of his season along with teammate Blake Young, they earned Suzuki the Manufacturer Championship in the series. Hayden took his first SuperBike-class win in 2010 and finished the year with five total wins. Young and his GSX-R1000 also won their first races of their career with a double victory at Road Atlanta, and a wild win in the rain during the final race of the season at Barber. John Hopkins, after recovering from an injury, finished off his 2010 season strong with three podium finishes aboard his M4 Monster Energy Suzuki GSX-R1000, finishing as high as second in the final race. Jake Zemke of the National Guard Jordan Suzuki team took first place in both races at Daytona. His GSX-R1000 worked flawlessly throughout both 44-mile, 15-lap races. The GSX-R1000 was victorious a total of 10 times in the SuperBike series and finished on the podium an impressive 26 times in all.

In the AMA SuperSport class, Suzuki made history in 2010 when Lucas Oil RMR RoadRacingWorld.com’s Elena Myers won at Infineon Raceway, making her the first female ever to win an AMA Pro Road Racing competition.

Congratulations to all the Suzuki racers in 2010, and we’re looking forward to a successful 2011!

Another Podium Finish for Hayden at VIR

17 08 2010
  • Tommy Hayden finished third in Sunday’s race at VIR.
  • Hayden is now 11 points behind the leader in the championship chase.
  • The Suzuki GSX-R1000’s responsive handling allowed Tommy to make the most of the race and finish on the podium.

BREA, CA – August 16, 2010 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Tommy Hayden, fresh off his victory on Saturday at VIR, made it to the podium again on Sunday with his third-place finish. Hayden battled for traction throughout the race but held it together to the finish line. Hayden is still in second place in the standings, but with two more rounds of racing to go in the AMA American SuperBike series, he’s well within striking distance of first place at 11 points back.

Hayden started on the front row of the grid and shot out to the early lead in Sunday’s race. He then moved into second where he held steady until he noticed some chatter in his bike, which is thought to have been due to the grip of the rear tire. With high humidity and thick cloud cover, the track wasn’t as hot and sticky as everyone would’ve liked, but Tommy made the most of the race by riding a smart and finishing third.

“I feel good about riding fast the first five laps, but in the end I didn’t have the speed and the rear tire couldn’t keep up,” Hayden said. “We’ll go back to work before New Jersey and find more speed.”

Round 9 of the AMA American SuperBike series takes place on September 3-5 at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, New Jersey. Hayden is looking forward to earning more points toward the championship then.

Tommy Hayden made his second podium appearance for the weekend on Sunday afternoon at VIR.

Blake Young Plans His Return to the AMA SuperBike Series

11 08 2010

BREA, CA – August 10, 2010 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Blake Young is recovering from injuries sustained during the Barber test in Alabama in June. Young’s last appearance in the AMA American SuperBike series was at Road America, and he suffered a fractured L-1 vertebrae in his back shortly thereafter. Young has been focused on physical therapy and healing, and is planning his comeback to the series soon aboard his GSX-R1000.

Young has visited several specialists both at his home in Madison, Wisconsin, and in California. Young has been active in his recovery, focusing on physical therapy and bicycle riding to strengthen the muscles in his back. Dr. Thomas Brian has been watching Blake’s recovery and says the prognosis for Blake’s return in 2010 is looking good.

“Lately everything has been going really well, and I’ve been back on the bicycle and in the gym,” Young said. “For the most part, I’m just getting anxious to get back on the bike. It seems like everyday I go to physical therapy I get to do a little more to test my limits and it has helped me refocus and think a lot about how to come back stronger from this. This is the first injury I’ve had that’s kept me out longer than one race, so it’s helped me really think about what my goals are and what I want to accomplish this year. Coming back, it’s going to be hard because I’m not contending for the championship, but that doesn’t mean we can’t win races and give it our all. I think VIR would be pushing it for a comeback, so I’m looking to New Jersey to be back on track.”

Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s team manager Peter Doyle is hopeful that Blake will be able to return to racing soon but isn’t putting a date on Young’s comeback. “I think it’s one of those injuries that you just have to let heal in its own time,” Doyle said. “We want Blake back 100 percent healthy so we can go out there and try to win some races full force. We’ll just have to take it a day at a time.”
