World’s First Personal Sports Amphibian on Display at Tampa Boat Show

8 03 2013

Gibbs Quadski represents “entirely new form of transportation”

TAMPA, FL – March 7, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The world’s first personal sports amphibian, the Gibbs Quadski, will be on display at this year’s Tampa Bay Boat Show (March 8-10).

Developed and built in the U.S., the High Speed Amphibian has a durable, but light-weight composite hull; utilizes patented water-jet technology, and is powered by a BMW Motorrad engine and transmission.

The Quadski transitions from land to water in less than five seconds and reaches planing speeds in seconds. The all-new HSA weighs 1,300 pounds, is equipped with a 15-gallon fuel tank and retails for about $40,000.

Currently available in five colors – red, yellow, blue, silver and black – the Gibbs Quadski is already on sale in Florida and will soon be available at marine, automotive, and powersports dealerships in Michigan, New York, Texas and elsewhere in the Midwest and southeastern United States.

Cycle Springs Powersports in Clearwater, the area’s largest family-owned powersports dealer, is one of the Florida dealerships authorized to sell and service the Quadski. The unique High Speed Amphibian will be on display at Cycle Springs’ exhibit (Booth # 126) at the Tampa Bay show (held at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg).

The dream of two visionary entrepreneurs — Alan Gibbs and Neil Jenkins — the Quadski is the product of millions of research dollars and years of development work in the U.S., the U.K. and New Zealand. It is assembled at a 54,000-square-foot assembly plant in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

“Quadski represents an entirely new form of transportation,” notes Alan Gibbs , the Co-founder of Gibbs Technologies and Gibbs Sports Amphibians. “It is the only sports amphibian in the world capable of reaching speeds of 45 miles per hour on both land and water and can transition between both in less than five seconds.”

Gibbs points out that the companies have more than 300 patents and patents pending on High Speed Amphibian technology representing an investment of more than $200-million and two-million man hours of work.

“Bringing Quadski to market has been a long uphill battle, but clearly worth the effort,” adds Gibbs Chairman Neil Jenkins . “Quadski has made its first public appearances at major marine, automotive, and powersports shows in the United States this year and will pave the way for a host of other Gibbs amphibians designed for consumers, sports enthusiasts, law enforcement agencies and first responders in years to come.”

Gibbs’ unique High Speed Amphibian attracted crowds at January’s North American International Auto Show (Jan.19-27) in Detroit and also drew media attention in February at the Miami International Boat Show (Feb.14-18) and the Detroit Boat Show (Feb.16-24).

Quadski has a unique retractable suspension system that provides superb ride-and handling on land and then can retract in seconds after entering water. The new High Speed Amphibian’s BMW four-cylinder, water-cooled engine is considered the lightest powerplant in its segment and features electronic fuel injection, a double-overhead camshaft and dry-sump lubrication.

Designed to meet applicable state and federal safety regulations, the Quadski is 10.5 feet in overall length; 5.2 feet in width, and 4.3 feet in height with a wheelbase of 5.8 feet.

Production Of World’s First High-Speed Sports Amphibian Begins In U.S.

13 11 2012

AUBURN HILLS, MI – November 13, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The GIBBS Quadski, the world’s first high-speed sports amphibian, went into production at a new 54,000-square-foot Detroit-area assembly plant here today.

The product of millions of research dollars and 15 years of development work at Gibbs Technologies and Gibbs Sports Amphibians, the Quadski is capable of reaching speeds of 45 mph on both land and water and can transition between the two in about five seconds.

Company and local government officials took part in “job one” ceremonies at the plant which is expected to employ more than 200 people when operating at full capacity later next year.

Gibbs Sports Amphibians Chairman Neil Jenkins said the company plans to build approximately 1,000 Quadskis through October of next year. They initially will be sold at major powersports dealerships throughout the Midwest and eastern United States, in addition to locations in the Great Lakes region and along the Gulf Coast.

Jenkins pointed out that GIBBS has implemented a flexible manufacturing system at its Auburn Hills plant that will support the production of a range of high-speed-sports amphibian products in addition to the Quadski.

A core group of GIBBS manufacturing personnel, including members from the company’s engineering, manufacturing, purchasing and quality-control staffs, began work on the system more than four years ago.

“A primary objective was to create product designs and manufacturing processes that would allow a variety of vehicle types to flow off assembly lines at relatively low volumes,” explained Tina Shaheen, the company’s chief operating officer. “Today we have more than four new sports-amphibian products under development that can be assembled on two lines.”

The new GIBBS assembly facility at 50 Corporate Drive in Auburn Hills, features high ceilings, large open areas and docking facilities to handle supplier-built sub-assemblies – all requirements for the successful implementation of the company’s flexible manufacturing system.

“The complexity of our high-speed amphibian technology presented special challenges for the company’s manufacturing engineers,” Jenkins noted. “They’ve been able to successfully incorporate highly complex amphibian systems and components into relatively simple modular designs that flow smoothly through basic assembly processes.

“The GIBBS Quadski is a quality product that has been specially designed for families and individuals who enjoy the outdoors, watersports, off-road travel, hunting and fishing. It offers premium powersports buyers a combination of power, comfort, versatility and freedom that has never been available before.”

Jenkins added that Quadski already has generated positive reviews from a variety of publications.  The Associated Press predicted “Amphibious vehicles could soon be zooming out of James Bond’s garage – or pond – and into yours.” Time Magazine Online said “Zipping across terrain at 45 miles per hour, the Quadski cuts across the bay as fast as it can dig treadmarks in your backyard.”

ATV Illustrated reported “Whatever you are riding today we guarantee it can’t do what the Quadski can.”  CNBC Online said “If you’ve ever daydreamed of being James Bond, here’s your chance to take that to the next level…..for $40,000 you can ride, perhaps, the coolest vehicle on earth. It’s called the Quadski.”

Autoweek noted “The Quadski is to previous generations of amphibious all-terrain vehicles what the Aquada was to the slow, marginally buoyant Amphicar.” And Palm Beach Illustrated said “There are some things in life that just make you want to scream out: ‘I gotta have one!’ Just take one look at the awesome new Gibbs Quadski and can’t you just picture yourself blasting along the Intracoastal and heading out to the beach to frolic in the waves?”

Amphibious ATV Coming to a Powersports Dealership Near You

16 10 2012

DETROIT, MI – October 16, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The world’s first high-speed sports amphibian – the GIBBS Quadski — will go on sale in the United States next month.

The dream of two visionary entrepreneurs, the GIBBS high-speed amphibian is the product of millions of research dollars and years of development work in the United States, New Zealand and the UK. It will be produced at a 54,000-square-foot assembly plant in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

An entirely new form of transportation for U.S. consumers, the Quadski is capable of reaching speeds of 45 mph on both land and water and transitions between both in five seconds or less.

Introduced at a Gibbs Sports Amphibian press conference in Detroit by Alan Gibbs, the company’s founder, and Neil Jenkins, its chairman, the Quadski is equipped with a 175-horsepower BMW Motorrad engine and transmission. With the press of a button, its wheels retract when entering the water and deploy when approaching land.

Jenkins told reporters in Detroit that Quadski will retail for about $40,000 when introduced in November. The company expects to have more than 20 dealership locations in place within the next 12 months, primarily in the Midwest, New York, Texas and the southeastern United States.

The GIBBS amphibian weighs 1,300 pounds, is equipped with a 15-gallon fuel tank and will be available in five colors – red, yellow, blue, silver and black. Suggested retail pricing and details about GIBBS’ dealer network will be announced prior to public introduction in mid November.

“Quadski represents an investment of more than $200-million and two-million man hours of work over a period of 15 years,” said Alan Gibbs. “With the introduction of Quadski next month, our dream of providing high-speed amphibian transportation to consumers will become a reality.

GIBBS has more than 300 patents and patents pending on its High Speed Amphibian (HSA) technology for consumer, commercial and first-responder use.

“It’s been a long, uphill battle, but clearly worth the effort,” said Gibbs. “Quadski will pave the way for a host of other HSAs for consumers, sports enthusiasts, law enforcement agencies, first responders and other commercial enterprises.”

Jenkins noted that Gibbs Sports Amphibians expects to add a total of more than 200 jobs at its Auburn Hills facilities on Brown Road and its new assembly plant at 50 Corporate Drive in the next 12 months. At maximum capacity, the plant will be capable of producing 20 units per hour. The company currently has 100 Michigan employees.

“Although Quadski initially will be available for sale only in the U.S., we expect to find a ready market for it in Europe, Latin America and elsewhere around the world in 2014 and beyond,” Gibbs added.

The new HSA’s BMW four-cylinder, water-cooled engine is considered the lightest power plant in its segment and features electronic fuel injection, a double-overhead camshaft and dry-sump lubrication. GIBBS spent more than 18 months and 75,000 engineering man hours to pair BMW’s Motorrad powertrain to its high-tech amphibian system.

“We’ve created an entirely new powersports category with our patented HSA technology. Quadski is especially designed for families and individuals who enjoy the outdoors, watersports, off-road travel, hunting and fishing,” said Jenkins. “It offers premium powersports buyers a combination of power, safety, comfort and versatility that has never been available before.”

Designed to meet applicable state and federal safety requirements, the Quadski is 10.5 feet in overall length; 5.2 feet in width, and 4.3 feet in height with a wheelbase of 5.8 feet. It initially will be offered for use by one person.

BRP Selects Querétaro Mexico to Build New Manufacturing Facility

3 10 2012

Santiago de Querétaro, Querétaro – October 2, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – BRP is building a new manufacturing facility in Querétaro to produce engines for its Can-Am off-road vehicles, manufacture composite hulls and decks, and eventually assemble Sea-Doo watercraft (PWC).

The 55,740-m2 (600,000-ft2) facility located in Querétaro’s industrial park will be built in three phases over a period of four years. The first phase is to assemble the Rotax engines that are currently being assembled in BRP’s facility in Ciudad Juárez – freeing up much-needed space to increase production capacity for ATVs and side-by-side vehicles. This phase, representing an investment of 395 million Mexican pesos (CA$30 million), will create 300 jobs and will be completed by the end of the year.

“Querétaro was the ideal choice for BRP given its proximity to Mexico City, its modern transportation infrastructure and its strong talent pool,” said Thomas Wieners, plant director. “Over and above direct job creation, this opens up great opportunities to local suppliers as well.”

Starting in spring 2013, BRP will put in place its new composite manufacturing process for PWC hulls and decks, and will gradually transfer its PWC assembly to Querétaro from 2014 to 2015 to provide more capacity in its Canadian plant.

“We are very excited with BRP’s investment, a world leader in the powersports industry and a manufacturer of products built in Mexico and sold in over 100 countries,” said José Calzada Rovirosa, state governor. “Reputed for its capacity to innovate, BRP now opens new opportunities for our Querétaro labour force for many years to come.”

Present in Mexico since 2001, BRP built a 38,000-m² (410,000-ft²) facility in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua in 2007, which now employs over 1,500 people.

Bombardier Recreational Products Inc. (BRP), a privately held company, is a world leader in the design, development, manufacturing, distribution and marketing of motorised recreational vehicles. Its portfolio of brands and products includes: Ski-Doo and Lynx snowmobiles, Sea‑Doo watercraft, Evinrude and Johnsonoutboard engines, Can-Am all‑terrain and side-by-side vehicles and roadsters, as well as Rotax engines. After the Can‑Am Spyder RS roadster in 2008 and the Spyder RT model in 2010, BRP is introducing its third model to the lineup: the Can-Am Spyder ST roadster: a sport touring vehicle with the right blend of comfort and sportiness to set it apart from the others. With its sport-touring rider ergonomics, added footboards for more legroom*, the same muscular Rotax 991 V-Twin engine and all BRP-renown safety features such as VSS, the Spyder ST roadster is as comfortable and nimble for a quick jaunt around town, as it is on a spirited ride on a favourite country lane, or a week-long getaway up the coast.

Innovations to the 2013 Can-Am roadster line-up also include the Brembo brake system specifically designed for Can-Am roadsters, a new suspension for better handling and performance and new front fenders with integrated LEDs for refined style and improved aerodynamics.**

“The Can-Am Spyder ST roadster complements the existing Spyder RS and Spyder RT line-ups perfectly,” said Yves Leduc, vice-president and general manager, North America division.”It offers confidence-inspiring handling and control, as well as a ride that’s as unique as it is exhilarating.”

Dealers and distributors also had a chance to try last week’s star of the Sand Sports Super Show in San Diego, California, where BRP unveiled its first sport side-by-side vehicle, the Can-Am Maverick. The new-from-the-ground-up Can-Am Maverick 1000R side-by-side vehicle is built to offer industry-leading 101 HP performance, precision-engineered handling and a driver-focused design unlike any sport side-by-side vehicle to date. Powered by a Rotax 1000R V-Twin powerpack that is unrivalled in the side-by-side vehicle market, the new Can-Am Maverick model offers the most powerful engine within the industry and leads its class in torque, acceleration and power-to-weight ratio. The Maverick side-by-side vehicle’s muscular set-up is complemented by a unique, sport-tuned front-and-rear suspension, a rigid frame with a centralized mid-engine layout, advanced ergonomics and a stunning design that make it stand out in a crowd.

“The Can-Am Maverick side-by-side vehicle is sure to please the most dedicated hardcore off-road sport enthusiasts with its unmatched and aggressive styling industry-leading performance, both of which unquestionably reflect the Can-Am brand,” said Chris Dawson, vice-president and general manager, International division.

Other features of the Maverick sport side-by-side vehicle include: high-flow dynamics, Intelligent Throttle Control (iTC), dual exhaust, continuously variable transmission (CVT) with Zylon reinforced drive belt, a steel frame engineered in way that it offers supreme traction, athletic agility and confidence-inspiring handling while at the same time offering improved rigidity versus the competition. A revolutionary and compact Torsional Trailing A-arms (TTA) independent rear suspension improves traction while also reducing unsprung weight and eliminating bump steer for extremely predictable handling. A strategically designed exterior gives the Maverick side-by-side vehicle its own look, while the innovative and purpose-built performance package rewards owners with unmatched comfort, convenience and safety. The Maverick side-by-side vehicle is made for recreational enjoyment, but also caters to true adventurists with its multi-function rear rack with LinQ system compatibility.

BRP also introduced its 2014 Can-Am Maverick MAX 4-seat model, available worldwide next summer.

Continuing with surprises, BRP also introduced an all-new Can-Am Outlander 650 X mr ATV, its newest hero for mud-riding enthusiasts. The 650 X mr ATV is every bit as tough and polished as the big-bore 1000 X mr model, but its ability to seamlessly cross over from the mud to the trails adds to its versatility and makes it a whole new breed in the industry.

Among BRP’s new Sea-Doo product updates is the GTI Limited 155 watercraft, a striking, luxurious watercraft in all-new Anthracite Grey colour. The GTI Limited 155 model comes with BRP’s industry-exclusive Intelligent Brake & Reverse (iBR) technology and cruise control with the Intelligent Throttle Control (iTC) system with ECO Mode for best fuel efficiency. BRP continues to push the water sports world with the only tow-specific watercraft with the 2013 Sea-Doo WAKE models. BRP’s award-winning Sea-Doo RXP-X 260 carries on the BRP performance heritage, leading the musclecraft benchmark with the new T3 hull and Ergolock system empowering riders to ride like pros with less effort.

“More than 800 on-site dealers and distributors were delighted to see how many innovations and new products were introduced during this meeting,” concluded Leduc. “It really shows our commitment to remain the leader in the industry and to provide our network with a variety of products to grow their business.”
