Barcia Scores His Second Career 450 Victory in Seattle

23 04 2013

TORRANCE, CA- April – (Motor Sports Newswire) – For the 15th round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, the Honda Red Riders headed to the rainy Pacific Northwest to do battle in front of 53,862 people at Seattle’s CenturyLink Field. Despite tough, muddy conditions Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Barcia rode an exceptional race, leading wire-to-wire to capture his second career 450-class victory. It was also a stellar night for the Muscle Milk-backed GEICO Honda team, with Eli Tomac and Zach Osborne finishing 2-3 respectively on the podium.

450 Race
Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Barcia may be the 450-class rookie, but he definitely doesn’t ride like it. With the second-quickest qualifying time in practice and a second in his heat race, the day started off solid for Barcia. In the main event, Barcia raced his way to the holeshot and despite constant pressure throughout the race he stayed consistent and led the entire 20 laps to take the win. This victory nearly mirrored his performance at round two when he led wire-to-wire to capture his first win of the season.

“This is an unreal feeling,” stated Barcia. “The last few weeks have been frustrating with fourth-place finishes so it is awesome to finally make it happen. I haven’t been getting good starts and there isn’t much you can do to catch up from a bad start, especially with the speed of this class. I was really looking for a podium tonight and to be able to get the win is so awesome. The start was awesome; I have been working hard at home and we made some changes to the bike so I think you’ll be seeing better starts from now on. I have two holeshots and two wins so that’s pretty cool. It was an intense race though. I heard Ryan back there and he was charging so I just tried to stay as consistent as possible, which worked. I’m so stoked right now.”

Teammate Trey Canard had a roller-coaster night aboard his Honda CRF450R; he was fourth quickest in practice and posted a third in his heat race behind Barcia. Canard got off the line in the back half of the field but was able to make his way up to sixth by the end of the first lap. By lap five, he had made his way into fourth until going down and ultimately being sidelined for the remainder of the race.

250 Race
After an eight-week hiatus the Western Regional 250 Supercross class resumed this weekend for round seven of the series and the Muscle Milk-supported GEICO Honda duo of Eli Tomac and Zach Osborne both claimed podium positions. Tomac nailed down the holeshot in the main event and led for a majority of the race, until he went down hard on lap 10. He quickly jumped up and was able to resume the race in second, which is where he finished. Tomac sits second overall in the championship points chase, with a 20-point deficit heading into Salt Lake City.

“I was hoping to close the gap a little today, but wasn’t able to,” explained Tomac. “I was fired up heading into the main after winning my heat race. I got a good start and was able to establish a nice lead for most of the race, but I got stuck in a deep rut coming out of the whoops and went over the bars. Luckily, I was able to get back up on the bike and hold onto a podium spot. I haven’t made repeating the championship easy on us but I will fight till the very end.”

It was exciting night for Osborne, who captured his first podium finish of the season with a third-place overall. “The whole day went really good for me,” said Osborne. “The practice and my heat race both went good, which gave me confidence heading into the main. I got a solid start and was able to work my way through the pack. I got into third and was able to stay there till the end.”

After starting outside the top 10, Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda’s Cole Seely was able to work his way through the field and post a solid fourth-place finish.

SEATTLE, WA – April 23 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The 2013 Monster Energy Supercross made its way to the rainy Northwest for the 15th round of the series at CenturyLink Field. Riders were met with soggy conditions that tested their ability to maintain control over their motorcycle, despite the ever-changing track conditions.

Yoshimura equipped Muscle Milk Honda’s Justin Barcia rode a flawless 450 main event to take the checkered flag in first place. Barcia ripped the holeshot and avoided the first turn carnage that claimed several riders. He stretched out his lead and remained uncontested for the duration of the race as track conditions resembled those of his Upstate New York home. Seattle marks the second 450 Main win for the Yoshimura powered Muscle Milk Honda camp and Justin Barcia.

RCH Suzuki’s Josh Hill had an interesting night, as he found himself tangled in the first turn pileup. Hill rode his Yoshimura powered Suzuki from the very back of the pack to a hard-fought and commendable 12th. Teammate Broc Tickle made it comfortably into the top 10, with a 7th place finish.

In the 250 West SX class, Yoshimura backed GEICO Honda riders climbed to the podium, with Eli Tomac and Zach Osborne taking 2nd and 3rd respectively. Teammate Zach Osborne was also on fire and nailed down his first podium of the year. The podium pair also set the top 2 fastest lap times in 250 A group qualifying practice.

Rattray and Davalos Show Impressive Speed in Western Regional 250SX Class’ Return to Action in Seattle

22 04 2013

CORONA, CA – April 22, 2013 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Following an eight-race break, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki riders Tyla Rattray and Martin Davalos returned to the track for the Western Regional 250SX Class Championship of Monster Energy AMA Supercross. A rainy day inside Seattle’s CenturyLink Field signified the West Region’s first race since February’s San Diego stop, and despite showing impressive speed throughout the day, Rattray and Davalos experienced mixed results at the end of the night.

Pro-Circuit-Tyla-Rattray-Seattle-SX-2

Rattray Breaks Through with Season Best
Rattray has been in search of consistency throughout the season, but didn’t have a finish better than eighth through the first six rounds. In Seattle, he overcame a pair of tough practice sessions to finish third in his heat race and easily transfer into the main event.

As the gate dropped for the main event, Rattray got a strong start and positioned himself just outside the top five on the opening lap. Soon thereafter, riders began to experience misfortune in the slick conditions, allowing Rattray to eventually engage in battle for the fourth spot along with his teammate Davalos and Ryan Sipes. The three riders put on a great battle for the crowd, with Rattray eventually prevailing.

Although he ultimately lost one more position before the race concluded, Rattray still captured a season-best fifth-place finish and moved from 11th to ninth in the championship standings. He sits just one point out of eighth.

Davalos Experiences Highs and Lows
With a pair of podium results to his credit through the first six rounds, Davalos was in search of continued success in Seattle. The veteran rider was at the upper portion of the practice charts throughout the afternoon and carried it into his heat race where he grabbed an impressive win.

Davalos was primed to challenge the front-runners in the main event, but was mired deep inside the top 10 on the opening lap. He quickly began to work his way through the field, eventually going bar-to-bar with Rattray and Sipes in a captivating top-five battle. Davalos followed his teammate’s forward progress but then suffered misfortune in the late stages of the main event, falling to 10th place. He recovered to end the race in ninth, but still sits sixth in the championship.

Showing Signs of Progress
While the results for both riders may not show it, Rattray and Davalos showed the progression the team made during the midseason break. With only two rounds remaining in the 2013 season, each rider has an opportunity to not only finish the season strong with a presence on the podium, but also continue their climb up the standings.

“It was tough out there, so I’m really happy to walk away with such a strong result,” said Rattray. “We started off slow trying to get everything adjusted to the conditions, but when it came time to go, we just went out there and made it happen. This is definitely the kind of result to build off of and finish out strong.”

“My speed was there all day, I just made some mistakes in the main event,” said Davalos. “I wish I would have gotten a better start, but I’m happy with how I was able to come through the field on such a tough track. It wasn’t the result I was hoping for, but I know I have the speed to get back onto the box before the season wraps up.”

Pro-Circuit-Martin-Davalos-Seattle-SX-3

Looking Ahead >> Salt Lake City
Only two races remain in the Western Regional 250SX Class Championship, in addition to the anticipated East/West Shootout. Davalos sits just five points out of fifth in the standings, and just eight points out of fourth. Now inside the top 10, Rattray is just one point out of eighth and 12 points out of seventh. Salt Lake City’s Rice Eccles Stadium looms next Saturday night for the penultimate round of the season.

Andrew Short Captures First Career Monster Energy Supercross Victory in Seattle

22 04 2012

Ryan Sipes Wins Western Regional Supercross Lites’ Return to Action

SEATTLE, WA - April 21, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship’s return to the West Coast was greeted by 52,731 fans inside CenturyLink Field on Saturday night, for the 15th race of the 2012 season. After nearly six seasons of racing in the Supercross Class, L&MC Racing Honda’s Andrew Short, of Smithville, Texas, captured his first career win in the premier division, leading every lap. Following a two-month break from Western Regional Supercross Lites Class competition, Star/Valli Yamaha’s Ryan Sipes, of Ekron, Ky., grabbed his first win of the season.

Short was the first rider out of the gate in the Supercross Class Main Event, securing the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot Award with Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Brayton, of Murrieta, Calif., and Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen, of Murrieta, Calif., in tow. Behind them, 2012 Monster Energy Supercross Champion Ryan Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash., went down following a mid-pack start, appearing to favor his leg while on the ground. The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider walked off the track under his own power, but did not complete a lap of competition in front of his hometown crowd.

“Ryan didn’t get such a good start,” said Reid Nordin, Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Manager. “He was charging through the pack and lost the front end and ended up getting a handle bar to the gut, which knocked the wind out of him, and he got a stinger when the foot peg came down on him. He’s really bummed out and upset with himself with what happened. He really wanted to do well for the fans here.”

Out front, Short and Roczen began a spirited battle for the lead on Lap 6, shifting momentum back-and-forth for several laps. Eventually, Short asserted himself in the top spot and took the win comfortably.

“It doesn’t feel real,” exclaimed Short, who missed seven races earlier this season to injury. “My team has been through some challenges, but we stuck together. There are so many people who have helped me in 11 years of doing this. I’m getting old. I didn’t believe (I could win) too much until the end and I think that’s been one of my problems in the past. All I wanted to do was be out here and to win is unreal.”

Roczen posted a career-best runner-up finish in first race in the Supercross Class this season. Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer, of Rupert, Idaho, rounded out the podium in third.

As the gate dropped on the Western Regional Supercross Lites Class Main Event, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson, of Menifee, Calif., edged out both Sipes and GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac, of Cortez, Colo., to grab the Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot Award, only to have Sipes assert himself in the lead shortly thereafter.

As Sipes opened a margin over the field, Wilson and Tomac went head to head in a heated battle for the runner-up spot. The class’ two top contenders for the championship traded the position a few times, before coming together on Lap 8, causing Wilson to fall to the ground.

Tomac looked to close in on Sipes, but was ultimately caught by Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin, of Murrieta, Calif., on the final lap. Sipes led all 15 laps of the main event, bouncing back from an injury he suffered earlier in the season.

“I worked really hard to come back here and didn’t think I’d be able to,” said Sipes, who has won just two points-paying races in his career. “I tried not to push. I tried to conserve and flow. I didn’t go fast, but I didn’t go slow either. The first five races (this season) were so tough. I felt good, but I was pushing too hard. It just feels so good to come back form (my) injury like this.”

Musquin held on for second, while Tomac finished third, taking over the points lead from Wilson, who recovered to finish seventh following his crash.

“I wasn’t happy with my heat race, but it was go time in the main event,” said Tomac, who holds a four-point lead in the championship standings. “Dean (Wilson) put some block passes on me and I said, ‘let’s play.’ I got into him there, but I guess that’s racing. I was rusty in practice but I gave it my all tonight. When we made contact, my clutch was bent, so I was riding in third gear. I’m looking forward to Salt Lake City because it’s like a home race for me.”

Monster Energy Supercross continues next weekend, hosting the 16th race of the 2012 season from Salt Lake City’s Rice Eccles Stadium.
