  • Exciting new ‘R’ version of 1199 Panigale Superbike unveiled.
  • Special touring-oriented Diavel Strada revealed.
  • Official 2013 plans released for MotoGP and World Superbike.

MILAN, ITALY – November 12, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Following the tradition of presenting its new motorcycles at the EICMA International Motorcycle Show in Milan, Ducati has now officially unveiled its complete 2013 range. The new and innovative models are a product of the genius and creativity of Ducati’s talented designers and engineers, and are set to capture thepublic’s attention at the EICMA 2012 event. The 77th edition of Milan’s International Motorcycle Show will pack the impressive Rho International Fair complex from 15-18 November.

The presentation of the 2013 Ducati range took place at the Milano-Rho Fair Auditorium and provided an opportunity for the CEO of Ducati Motor Holding, Gabriele Del Torchio, to address the capacity audience. During thePress Conference, he explained the international market situation and the business success achieved by the Bologna-based manufacturer during 2012. Despite the global market situation and economic difficulties, Ducati’s growth trend has continued, both in terms of market share and of production and sale volumes. This confirms the company’s secure position, underlined with the recent acquisition by the Audi Group, which subsequently further enhanced Ducati’s structure and organisation, enabling it to face the future with a positive and confident attitude.

“Since 2007, we have only seen “red” on the bodywork of our bikes,” said Gabriele Del Torchio, CEO of Ducati Motor Holding during the press conference. “Ducati’s record turnover of 2011, looks set to increase 20% further by the close of 2012 with over 44,000 motorcycles registered. Our market share has also grown from 2.4% in 2006 to 5.2% in 2012, an equivalent of over 10% share in what we call the ‘Ducati Relevant Market’. Ducati has become even more global today, with approximately 9 motorcycles out of every 10 produced in our Borgo Panigale factory in Bologna destined for foreign markets. The USA is currently our top market, achieving a consistent two-figure growth, while other geographical areas, such as the Far East and Latin America where we are investing major resources and reaping promising results, are still yet to reach their full potential.

“With the arrival of the new shareholders, Ducati is in stronger hands than ever, and being part of the Audi Group will definitely contribute to Ducati’s growth and expansion. This acquisition acknowledges the value of everyone who works in our company, the value of the Ducati brand, and of its past achievements.

“EICMA is the best occasion to show our new models and I am particularly proud to present the new Hypermotard in addition to the rest our 2013 range. The excellence of our ‘emotional appeal’, increasingly important in today’s competitive environment, is cleverly combined with our unmistakeable all-Italian style, and the advanced technology used in our new 2013 range confirms that Ducati is, and will continue to be, a product-oriented company with development and innovation representing the milestones of our growth strategy.”

The Ducati Press Conference for the launch of the 2013 model range also provided an ideal occasion to present Ducati’s official racing program for 2013. Four Ducati riders have already been confirmed in MotoGP with Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso for the factory Ducati Team and Ben Spiesand Andrea Iannone for the satellite team. For World Superbike, the new Team Ducati Alstare was officially announced and, coordinated by the Belgian organisation managed by Francis Batta, will field Carlos Checa and Ayrton Badovini aboard the new 1199 Panigale.

The brand ambassador and guest of honour at the Conference was Daniele Molmenti, Gold Medallist at the London Olympic Games in the K1 Canoe Slalomand a passionate “Ducatista”. While on the podium in London earlier this year, the Olympic medal winner explained that he competes in ared canoe to underline his love for Ducati motorcycles. Molmenti greatly appreciated the chance to preview the 2013 models and was particularly interested in the new Superbike 1199 Panigale R, a masterpiece of applied technology and pure performance.

Claudio Domenicali, General Manager of Ducati Motor Holding, then took to the stage to explain the details and features of the 2013 Ducati models. Hefocused in particular on the long-awaited new generation Hypermotard family, and underlined the major, strategic role of the 1199 Panigale supersport model and its world debut with the prestigious R version.

“Here at EICMA 2012 we present one totally new model and a series of significantly updated models in line with our strategic plan,” Said General Manager, Claudio Domenicali at the Press Conference. “The Hypermotard is completely new. Technologically enhanced and presented in standard and SP versions, it has a brand new 4-valve per cylinder, liquid-cooled, Testastretta 11° engine, equipped also with our new secondary air system. The new motorcycle maintains the spirit of the original Ducati Hypermotard, but widens its accessibility with a larger fuel tank and revised ergonomics. We also present the Hyperstrada, a model equipped with a series of features that extend the motorcycle’s use into the world of touring, while maintaining the fun-to-ride character typical of a supermotard.

“With our passion for racing and sport bikes, we just had to produce an ‘R’ version of the 1199 Panigale. The ‘R’ title represents Ducati’s maximum expression of technology. In this case, connecting rods in titanium in addition to many other lightweight components and a race kit that represents a package ideal from which to develop the Superbike version, which will race next year. We have also decided to extend the Diavel range with the introduction of the Diavel Strada. Equipped with luggage, large screen and revised, more upright riding position, the Diavel is now ready also to entertain riders on longer rides outside the city.”

2013 Ducati Hypermotard family
As expected, the focus of attention at the presentation was on the new generation of the Hypermotard family. It takes the innovation and excitement of the original concept and enhances it even further with three incredible new models: The thrilling Hypermotard, Hypermotard SP and the introduction of a stylish and accessible mid-range tourer with everyday practicality – The Hyperstrada. The new range combines Ducati’s latest technologies with outstanding Italian design and engineering to write the latest chapter in the Hypermotard story. The Hypermotard and Hypermotard SPdeliver a thrilling and fun filled experience, whether on the daily commuteor ripping-up the track asphalt, while the Hyperstrada awaits long distanceadventure, enabling practical, everyday motorcycling in absolute Ducati style.

Brand new from the ground up, the models introduce the new 110hp Ducati 821cc Testastretta 11° engine  in a new Trellis frame equipped with top-of-the range chassis components. The Hypermotard and Hypermotard SP usesharp and sleek styling to maintain that essential Supermotard look, while the Hyperstrada is factory-accessorised with full touring-oriented specification. Combining these two worlds of performance with excellent ergonomics and the Ducati Safety Pack of latest generation 3-level ABS, 8-level Ducati Traction Control and integrated Riding Modes, the new modelsnow gain a relevance that makes perfect sense in modern motorcycling. The new range takes the Hypermotard concept into the future with refined design and user-friendly technologies that will enhance its enjoyment to a wider range of riders.

Ducati Superbike 1199 Panigale R
The 2013 Ducati Superbike family line-up is now completed with the highly-anticipated arrival of the 1199 Panigale R, the absolute flagship of the range and the machine specially developed with enhanced technical specification by Ducati Corse for World Superbike homologation. The “R” takes everything that the “S” model is currently equipped with and applies a list of enhancements to the technicalspecification that enable the model to achieve even greater targets. Titanium con-rods, which save an overall 0.63kg (1.38lb), a 0.7kg (1.54lb) lighter crankshaft flywheel, DLC-coated rocker-arms and revised engine mapping now enhance the Superquadro engine’s crank acceleration and allow it to rev 500rpm higher to a 12,000rpm limit, an incredible engineering achievement for 112mm pistons.

The model also features a new 4-point adjustable swingarm pivot, designed to enable riders a personalised and precise set-up and a race kit consisting of high-penetration racing screen, fairing mirror caps in machined alloy and a full Termignoni exhaust system with dedicated ECU mapping (for track use only). The system provides an impressive power increase of 3% at the top ofthe rev-range and 15% in the mid-range. Additional enhancements to the machine include lightweight carbon fibre rear hugger, rear suspension guard, heels guards, ignition switch surround and top fairing inner panels and carbon fibre protectors for the single-sided swingarm and clutch cover. These lightweight chassis and engine components enable the “R” version a dry weight of just 165kg (363.7lb), even with an ABS braking system fitted as standard equipment. This top-of-the-range model is also fitted with a special race-style seat fabric for added “feel” and equipped with the GPS-enhanced Ducati Data Acquisition system, for automatic lap times and circuit map-linked data. The 1199 Panigale R is dressed in Ducati red with defining white race features, sporting a mix of red and brushed aluminium on the fuel tank with lightweight forged wheels by Marchesini in black.

2013 Ducati Diavel Strada
A surprise entry for the Diavel family comes in the form of the new Diavel Strada. The sophisticated new model, specifically designed for longer journeys, has been factory-accessorised with touring-friendly components that enable all-day riding comfort for both rider and passenger.

Further enhanced with touring comfort and functionality, the carefully designed screen blends effortlessly into the Diavel’s sleek lines to provide improved wind protection, and the rider’s posture is further improved for long-distance with higher handlebars swept back towards the rider and larger, comfort-enhancing seats with revised foam cushioning. Theaddition of heated grips further underlines the attention given to rider-friendly detail and the higher-output generator that powers them alsoprovides for two handy auxiliary power outlets intended for heated clothingor navigation accessories.

The passenger’s ride has also been improved with a ride-relaxing back-rest and confidence-inspiring grab-rails. The Diavel’s desire for touring practicality has been elegantly satisfied with stylishly shaped side luggage, fitted as standard equipment with revised passenger footpegs and rear lighting. Pirelli Reviews Portimão from a Tyre Point of View

20 09 2012

The Diablo Superbike tyres in the SC0, SC1 and SC2 compounds are ready to hit the track at the spectacular Portuguese circuit for the penultimate round of the 2012 World Superbike Championship

MILAN, ITALY – September 18, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – For the penultimate round of the World Superbike Championship which will be held over the weekend at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve in Portugal, Pirelli will bring the complete range of SC0, SC1 and SC2 compounds of Diablo Superbike tyres in various solutions capable of guaranteeing grip and excellent performance, even with different asphalt temperatures.

With just two rounds left in the season, the battle for championship title is still open and there are three contending riders from three different motorcycle manufacturers: Max Biaggi on his Aprilia, Marco Melandri on his BMW and Tom Sykes on his Kawasaki.

The Pirelli solutions for Portimão

As with every round, in order to tackle this track which is particularly demanding for tyres, Pirelli will provide the Superbike riders with multiple slick solutions to choose from in addition to the intermediate and wet tyres. For the front Pirelli will bring 2 SC1 solutions and 1 SC2. The N1159 will be present as the standard SC1, used in every round raced so far this season, as well as the P1280 as an alternative SC1 development solution, introduced for the first time at Donington and also used at Misano Adriatico, Aragòn, Brno, Silverstone and the Nürburgring because it is able to provide more grip at low temperatures. These will be accompanied by the P773, a mid-hard SC2 solution which has already been available to the riders throughout the year in all the races.

For the rear, on the other hand, Pirelli will be bringing 5 different tyres, 2 in SC0 compound, 2 in SC1 compound and 1 in SC2 compound. One of the two SC0 solutions is the R874 in an oversized 200 profile, already used at Brno and, in the centre reinforced SC2 compound version, also used at Phillip Island, Monza and Misano. The other is the R548, introduced at Misano and also used during the Brno round.

In addition to the SC0 compound solutions, the 2012 standard SC1 solution will be there, that is, the P1060 which has already been available for every 2012 round except Monza and Moscow, as well as the development solution, the R302, which met the asphalt for the first time during the Imola tests and was then used at Donington, Miller, Aragòn, Brno, Silverstone, Moscow and the Nürburgring. The final alternative for the rear that the riders will be able to choose is the N1157 SC2 for ideal use in then event of very low temperatures.

The race from a tyre point of view
The part of the track that puts the tyres to the hardest test is the last turn which is 350 metres long and takes 6.5 seconds to navigate: due to the large turn radius (about 150 metres), the bike is in constant acceleration and goes from 150 to 250 kph at a lean angle of about 50°. This causes a significant increase in temperature on the side of the tyre affected by the lean, particularly for the rear tyre which must withstand the high heat while simultaneously ensuring strong lateral force and allowing the bike to accelerate. The riders who are able to come out of this turn and onto the straight stretch at the highest speed will be able to gain a significant advantage over their rivals.

On the contrary, turns 5, 8, 11, 13 and 14 have a very tight radius (about 30 metres), which forces the rider to brake to an extremely low speed. Halfway through the turn the bike needs the rear tyre, which is very cold, to provide strong longitudinal acceleration up to 1G at a lean angle of 50°. The tyres are particularly cold, especially coming into the left handers (numbers 5 and 13). Once again, the riders who are able to accelerate a bit earlier than the others will have an important advantage.

While the rear tyre must go from low to extremely high temperatures, the front one has other, just as important, tasks to complete. It must be able to come into the turns mentioned above quickly and precisely. At the end of the straight stretch over the finish line, in other words, the first turn with the 100 metre radius which allows the riders to hold speeds greater than 100 kph, the front tyre is particularly stressed because it has to travel about 80 metres at a lean and with the rider on the brakes.

IRVINE, CA – Aug. 27, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. is going big with its global debut of its 2013 line of iconic Ninja® motorcycles in New York’s Times Square, Sept. 13.  The company will stream a live feed of the reveal of their latest motorcycles during the “Ninja Times Square Takeover” from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Kawasaki is planning a two-block display of motorcycles and a celebration that stretches along Broadway from West 45th to West 47th Street.  Highlighting the celebration will be music, giveaways, special celebrity guests and the legendary Kawasaki motorcycles that have helped pioneer the modern sportbike since the introduction of the original Ninja more than 25 years ago.

According to Kawasaki’s marketing director, Chris Brull, the new models will be joined by a selection of significant, older models. They will include the original 1984 Ninja as well as the legendary 1973 Z1, hailed as the world’s first “superbike” and the motorcycle that set the stage for an entirely new segment over the next few decades.

He said part of the day’s closing presentation will include the give-away of two new Ninja motorcycles.

Among the scheduled activities—many of which will be shown on a huge screen above the street—are various staged presentations, unique stunt riding exhibitions by former SPEED TV host, Jason Britton, motorcycle drag race instruction from multi-time national champion, Rickey Gadson, and a collection of free activities for individuals and families.

Kawasaki will also park the Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing transporter on Broadway and Ryan Villopoto, the most decorated professional racer of the past few years will be there to sign posters for onlookers.  Prior to suffering an injury early this season, he had captured several championships in 2011, including two of the most prestigious on the racing circuit, the FIM World Supercross Championship, and the AMA Motocross Championship.

Brull said this unique model introduction “brings the brand’s core authenticity to a broader audience that will be able to interact with our people, our products and the sport that appeals to more men and women each year.”

The marketing director said the concept of the “Ninja Times Square Takeover” grew from internal discussions seeking different ways to bring the company’s “Let the good times roll” philosophy to a broader audience. “Times Square is recognized as the “crossroads of the world,” and we’re thrilled to be able to share our brand of motorcycle enthusiasm with such a large, diverse group of New York residents and visitors,” said Brull.

New 17” Pirelli Diablo Superbike Tires First Test at Aragon with the Superbike World Championship Riders

27 06 2012

ARAGON, SPAIN – June 27, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Pirelli confirms the test day for Monday 2 July at the Aragòn circuit when all Superbike World Championship riders and their respective teams will be able to try for the first time the development solutions in the Diablo Superbike tires (currently produced in 16.5”) in the 17-inch size – the size that the Superbike World Championship will run on starting next year.

The day’s program has the riders try the 16.5” tires for a few laps, the same tire that they have available during the racing weekend, before moving on to the17″ tires of which Pirelli will take 4 front-wheel and 4 rear-wheel solutions. However, precisely not to falsify the test results and to prevent the riders from focusing on the difference between the two sizes, both the 16.5” tires and the 17” solutions will have the same compound, SC1. In this way, given the same compound, the riders will be able to correctly assess the differences between the tires they are currently using in races and those that they will use from the next season.

The radical decision to move to 17-inch tires was promoted and strongly desired by Pirelli and immediately accepted enthusiastically both by Infront and by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (the International Motorcycling Federation). Pirelli has already proposed solutions that have since been widely appreciated not only in the racing field but also in normal production and above all in the last three years has very much accelerated development to respond to the technical needs of users and of the new increasingly powerful bikes. In 1999, for example, Pirelli was the first tire manufacturer to introduce the 190/55 – R17 size in competitions and for about 5 years this size was adopted also in normal production for mounting on very powerful superbikes, in 2010 a new high-modulus carcass (a Pirelli Patent) was introduced and the compounds were improved and in 2011 the new 200/60 – R17 size was introduced.

Today, in various national championships (French, German, Australian, Canadian, etc.) 17” tires are already used for reasons of savings linked above all to the use of normal production wheels and Pirelli believes that this is the right moment to introduce it to the Superbike field because the motorcycle manufacturers and the market are ready for the change, some superbikes on sale already use larger tires and the market is ready to use high-performing 17” tires.

The 16.5″ tires, currently used in the World Superbike Championship and also in endurance, BSB and CIV, were the reference size up until now. In fact, until 2004, the World Superbike Championship did not have a sole tire supplier and Pirelli adapted to the sizes which the other suppliers provided. Now, to remain faithful both to the basic Superbike philosophy which envisages that whatever is proposed for racing can also be sold on the market, and to its own philosophy, that is to bring sporting competitions and solutions developed in the racing field closer to the daily lives of all motorcyclists, Pirelli has decided to replace the current 16.5” tires with the 17” tires which have already won many national Superbike Championships.

Thanks to this decision, even more than before, Pirelli will be able to make available to every motorcyclist, road products with technology and development closely derived from the most important World Championship for production bikes, where Pirelli is the sole supplier. The World Superbike Championship will be a precious training and testing ground which will allow Pirelli to study and better develop 17″ tires which are more and more in demand, thereby remaining faithful to its motto “We sell what we race, we race what we sell”and continuing to provide bikers with extremely high quality products, developed and fine-tuned with the assistance of the great Superbike champions.

Pirelli Tire North America designs, develops, manufactures and markets tires for passenger vehicles in both the original equipment and replacement markets as well as markets and distributes tires for motorcycles and motorsports. Located in Rome, Georgia, Pirelli’s Modular Integrated Robotized System (MIRS) employs state-of-the-art technology to manufacture tires for both export and domestic markets.  For more information please visit www.us.pirelli.com.

Ducati President Announces Record Sales Figures

23 06 2012

MISANO ADRIATICO, ITALY – June 23, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – During a press conference held at the World Ducati Week 2012, the President of Ducati Motor Holding, Gabriele Del Torchio, has highlighted Ducati’s constant growth and record-breaking sales (+12%) and revenues (+20% YTD) achieved by Ducati in May 2012.

Ducati’s massive gathering of passionate fans and owners from all over the world – World Ducati Week,  running from 21-24 June at the Misano World Circuit in Misano Adriatico – provided Gabriele Del Torchio anideal platform from which to deliver the latest figures from Ducati’sinternational market and the excellent sales results that the Bologna-based premium motorcycle manufacturer achieved during the opening months of 2012. Despite a difficult market and a slowing global economy, Ducati continues to grow and improve in terms of market share, output volumes and sales, clearly highlighting the security of a company that is now well structured, strategically organised and ready to move into the future with a change of ownership.

“This is my third WDW and a key moment for everyone who works at Ducati,” said Mr. Del Torchio at the Press Conference. “Throughthis event, we have the opportunity to share our passion and pride in beingpart of a prestigious, long-standing brand such as Ducati with the thousands of Ducatisti who have ridden to the Riviera Romagnola from all over the world. We are on the brink of a new era, one that the company begins inthe knowledge that all the goals set together with Investindustrial have been achieved brilliantly.

“Since 2006 we have doubled our market share and sales and there has also been a net improvement in our financial position. Today, Ducati isa rock-solid company that has aroused the interest of Europe’s largest car maker with whom we’re now ready to begin a new and equally exciting adventure.

“The hard work done by everyone at Ducati has paid off and the results confirm the soundness of the strategies implemented from 2006-2011.Thanks to policies focussed on product development, ever-higher investment levels, careful marketing aimed at making the Ducati brand ever-more admired and respected worldwide and the development of emerging markets, Ducati sawrevenues grow from €305 million in 2006 to €480 million in 2011 while EBITDA rose from €27 million in 2006 to €94 million in 2011. The number of employees has also increased, from 1043 in 2006 to 1193, the number working at Ducati today.

“Over these years we have developed the most exciting and innovative product range in our long history, launching no less than 17 newmodels. These include the Multistrada 1200 in 2010, the Diavel in 2011 and the most recent, the 1199 Panigale. These successes contributed enormously to the increase in sales, which rose significantly from 35,300 bikes in 2006 to 42,200 at the end of 2011.

“Despite the shrinking international market (over-500cc = -4% YTD) and after 2011 proved to be the best in Ducati’s history, we understandably felt optimistic going into 2012, which promises equally significant levels of satisfaction and achievement. In fact, during May 2012 we achieved an absolute record with motorcycle sales of over 6,500, a 12% growth compared to May 2011. In the US market, sales increased 48% and on Asian markets a staggering 238%. Positive signs have also been seen in Europe, where in France, for example, sales increased by 13%. Altogether, Ducati saw sales increase by 12% but, even more significantly, revenues increased by 20% (May YTD), highlighting both the increased volumes and theimproved product mix. These are achievements that we want to share with ourcommunity, with our public, with the Ducatisti who have come here to Misanofrom all over the world for the seventh edition of World Ducati Week.

“Sadly, we will all be aware of the devastation caused by the recent earthquake on the Po Valley plain north of Bologna and its impact interms of extensive material damage and loss of life. The people, institutions and businesses of Emilia are fighting back bravely, demonstrating admirable strength of spirit and social solidarity. Nevertheless, despite everyone’s best efforts, some slowing of outputwill be inevitable. Yet thanks also to results such as these, we can look to the future with the strength and optimism that are vital to achieving even greater growth.”

13 06 2012

June 13, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Hyosung and DSK Motowheels has launched their all new 250 cc superbike, GT250 Rin India with a price tag of R 275,000 ($4,917 US) (ex-showroom). GT250R is an aesthetically styled sports bike that demands attention, needless to say it has got a fair bit of what it’s deserved. The 17 liter fuel tank is impressive and so are the twin disc brakes. In place is a 4-stroke oil cooled V Twin engine. Engine output figures read 28 bhp at 10,000rpm and 22 Nm torque at 8,000 rpm.

It takes 9.96 seconds for the GT250R to accelerate from 0-100kmph in standing start. 17″ Shinko tires helps the superbike keep traction on various surfaces. Palm grips are excellent and adjustable rearview mirror fairly good. Upside-down telescopic forks adorn the front and an adjustable monoshock sits pretty at the rear end.

In India even sportsbikes are given their vote based on fuel efficiency, and Hoyosung’s GT 250 scores high in this department. At 26.4 kpl in city traffic environments and 33.5 kpl on highway this bike impresses. Clutch control is not the best and could have been better but the other aspects of GT 250R more than make up for this damper.

Sportsbike riding position is comfortable. Overall, this bike is a power performer that will evoke interest of motorbike enthusiasts.

Main competitor of Hyosung GT250R in India is Honda’s CBR250R, which is powered by a single cylinder engine and is priced at Rs 1.44 lacs (without ABS) and Rs 1.69 lacs (with ABS). Not only Honda CBR250R is cheaper, it is surprisingly faster than the new Hyosung GT250R. Honda CBR250R does a 0-100 kmph in just 8.97 seconds.
