Dungey and his RM-Z450 Put a Perfect Cap on Phenomenal Rookie Season

13 09 2010
  • Ryan Dungey won both motos at Pala, making his tally 19 total moto wins out of 24.
  • Dungey dominated the first moto with a 28-second lead as he crossed the finish line, and in the second moto came from an eighth-place start to take the lead and the win.
  • Dungey won 10 overalls in 2010, making him the most successful rookie ever in the AMA Pro Motocross class.

BREA, CA – September 13, 2010 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey ended his amazing season on a high note, winning both motos and the overall at the final race of the 2010 AMA Pro Motocross series at Pala Raceway in Southern California. Dungey won 10 overalls this year, nine in a row, with an impressive 19 moto wins. That along with his 2010 AMA Supercross Championship in May makes Ryan the most successful rookie ever to race. His 2010 Suzuki fuel-injected RM-Z450 took him all the way to the championship in both series.

“My team, this group of people, have taught me well,” Dungey said. “I’m fortunate to work with so many great people, and now that the season is over we’ll enjoy the championship and then put our heads down and be tough in preparing for Supercross in January.”

Dungey started the day with a first-moto victory in which he took over the lead by the third lap and then steadily put time between him and the rest of the field. By the time Dungey crossed the finish line on his championship-winning Suzuki fuel-injected RM-Z450, he was 28 seconds ahead of second place. With that convincing win, Dungey was prepared to take on Moto 2 and finish off his rookie 450 season in style.

When the gate dropped on the second moto, Dungey didn’t get as smooth a start as he would’ve liked. Ryan came out of the first turn in eighth place, and though the 2010 AMA Pro Motocross title was already his, the same drive that led him to be a double champion this year kept him from coasting through the race. Dungey methodically picked off riders ahead of him and by the midway point of the moto he took over the lead. Dungey kept himself out front with the power and smooth-handling suspension on his RM-Z450, which really helped on the tough and rutted track. Dungey easily won the race and took the overall, his tenth of the season and also a new record for wins by a rookie in the 450 class.

“I’m happy I went 1-1 on the day, and I enjoyed the Pala track,” Dungey said after the race. “It was tough out there and it took a lot of physical and mental fitness. I prepare for tracks like this, so having a rough race shows the hard work we all put in during the week.”

Ryan Dungey and his Suzuki RM-Z450 made history this year by winning the AMA Supercross championship, making him only the second rookie ever to do so and also the youngest. Dungey then followed that up with the 2010 AMA Pro Motocross title, which he wrapped up at Round 10 of the 12-race series. With his 10 overall wins and 19 moto victories, Ryan Dungey will go in the record books as the most successful rookie in the sport. He has now earned four titles between the 2009 and 2010 title, and he’s been named captain of Team USA for the Motocross of Nations that takes place in Colorado at the end of September.

Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey Wins the 2010 AMA Motocross Championship

1 09 2010
  • Ryan Dungey clinched the AMA Pro Motocross title at Southwick, making it the second title of his phenomenal rookie year in the 450 class.
  • Dungey wrapped up the championship with two races left in the series, thanks to the massive points lead Dungey built by his monumental winning streak of nine overall races in a row.
  • Dungey has been on a Suzuki throughout his amateur and pro career, and has now won four titles in two years aboard Suzuki dirt bikes: 2009 AMA Supercross Western Regional Lites Championship, 2009 AMA 250 Motocross Championship, 2010 AMA Supercross Championship, and now the 2010 AMA Pro Motocross Championship.
  • Dungey has been named as the captain for the U.S. team competing in the Motocross of Nations in September. He won his event last year, securing the win for Team USA in 2009.

BREA, CA – August 31, 2010 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – History has been made. Ryan Dungey is the 2010 AMA Pro Motocross Champion, securing his second title of the year this weekend at Southwick MX in Massachusetts. The 20-year-old rookie has gained enough points in the series with his complete domination of the 450 motocross class to take home the trophy with two races still left on the schedule. Dungey claimed the 2010 AMA Supercross title in May, making him the youngest rookie racer ever to do so, and now has added the Pro Motocross championship to his list of accomplishments, making him the only rookie ever to clinch both titles. Dungey has been unstoppable on his Suzuki fuel-injected RM-Z450 and has taken home the win in the past nine races in a row and won 16 out of 20 motos

“What Ryan has done, no one has ever done before including McGrath, Stewart, Carmichael,” Team Manager Roger DeCoster said. “No one has ever won both the Supercross and a National Championship back to back as a rookie. It’s pretty impressive. Sometimes, because Ryan is such a subdued nice guy, you don’t really realize what a big thing that he has done. I expect more and more perfection, but you look back and see that he is doing things that no one has ever done before – it’s pretty impressive.”

Dungey went into Southwick focused on racing his best race, like always. He lined up at the gate determined to give his best performance on the sandy, technical track in Massachusetts, and at the start of moto 1, Dungey started near the front of the pack. He moved into second place and stayed there most of the race. During the last lap, Dungey was battling for the lead when the opportunity to move up presented itself. Dungey and his RM-Z450 took the lead with less than a lap to go and took the win.

With the championship in view, Dungey lined up for moto 2 focused on finishing strong again. Dungey moved into the lead early in the race and by the time the checkered flag flew, he was more than 24 seconds ahead of second place. Dungey clinched the title by ending the day 151 points ahead of second place with only two races left on the schedule.

“This feels great,” Dungey said after the race. “It’s a lot of hard work and a lot of long weeks in the off season to prepare for this, but its all the better when you pull it off and win the championship. It’s not all me, everyone on the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team put in 110 percent into everything they do and that’s all I could ever ask. We work well together and enjoy working together at the same time. It makes it fun.”

“The Suzuki family is ecstatic to add this championship to our trophy case,” Rod Lopusnak, Suzuki’s National Sales Manager for the Motorcycle Division, said. “Looking back at the last year, it is hard to find one word other than ‘Champion’ to express what Ryan, the RM-Z450, and Team Rockstar Makita Suzuki have accomplished in their rookie season!”

“Congratulations to Ryan Dungey for his awesome, record-breaking rookie season!” Yoshimura R&D of America Vice President Don Sakakura said. “Ryan’s courage, superior skills, and diligent conditioning were instrumental in his dominating motocross season, accomplishments which Ryan will surely cherish for a lifetime. His Suzuki RM-Z450 performed flawlessly all season long, and we must offer sincere appreciation to the Suzuki engineering team abroad, as well Roger DeCoster and his team of race technicians.”

“It’s been a perfect season; probably a season we will remember for the rest of our lives,” DeCoster said. “It’s never happened before – a rookie has never won back to back championships. Ryan has done it.”

Dungey has made history winning a total of four national titles in the past two years. Ryan won two titles in 2009, the AMA Supercross Western Regional Lites and the 250 Motocross championships, both on the RM-Z250, as well as being the hero of Team USA at the Motocross of Nations in Italy. Now with the 2010 Supercross and the Motocross title in his possession, Dungey was named the captain of Team USA and hopes to keep the Motocross of Nations championship in the U.S.

The next AMA Pro Motocross race takes place at Steel City in Delmont, PA, on September 4th. Dungey, despite having clinched the title, will be focused on battling for the lead there.

Dungey Heading Into Southwick on the Brink of History

27 08 2010
  • Ryan Dungey is currently 111 points ahead in the AMA Pro Motocross race toward the championship.
  • If Dungey wins at Southwick, he will clinch the 2010 AMA Pro Motocross Championship, making it his second title earned during his rookie 450 season.
  • Dungey has won 14 motos out of 18, and has taken the overall victory in eight straight races of the nine so far this year.

BREA, CA – August 26, 2010 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s rookie 450 star Ryan Dungey could possibly wrap up the 2010 AMA Pro Motocross Championship on Saturday in Southwick, MA. Dungey has won enough this season to put himself 111 points ahead of the second-place rider, and if he earns enough points on Saturday he’ll have the championship sewn up. Ryan has won the last eight races in a row, and has taken the top spot in 14 motos out of 18. He and his Suzuki RM-Z450 have been dominating this year, and Dungey is looking forward to the sandy, challenging track of Southwick.

Coming off his exceptionally successful 2010 Supercross season as only the second rookie to ever win the title and also the youngest, Dungey set his sights on having a great year outdoors. After getting acclimated to the switch form stadiums to National tracks, Dungey settled into the groove of winning aboard his Suzuki fuel-injected RM-Z450 and hasn’t slowed down since. Dungey had two convincing moto wins at Unadilla two weeks ago, and although Southwick has different soil, he hopes to achieve similar results there.

Ryan was selected to be the captain of the 2010 U.S. Motocross of Nations Team, announced before Round 8 of the AMA Pro Motocross series at Unadilla. This year is shaping up to be one for the history books if the 20-year-old Minnesota native can pull off his second championship in his first year in the 450 class.

Dungey was also selected to be the captain of the U.S. team for the 2010 Motocross of Nations, which takes place in Colorado on September 25-26. Dungey will compete in the MX1 class aboard his RM-Z450. Dungey made a splash last year when he won his race in the 2009 Motocross of Nations in Italy, securing the overall victory for Team USA.

Round 9 of the AMA Pro Motocross series takes place in Southwick, Massachusetts, on August 28.

16 08 2010
  • Ryan Dungey took his eighth overall victory in a row on Saturday at Unadilla with his 1-1 moto victories.
  • Dungey now leads the AMA Pro Motocross series by 111 points aboard his powerful Suzuki RM-Z450.
  • Temporary teammate Clement Desalle from Belgium went 2-2 for the day and finished second overall, making it a Rockstar Makita Suzuki 1-2 podium.

BREA, CA – August 15, 2010 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Rockstar Makita Suzuki had a banner day at the ninth round of the AMA Pro Motocross series at Unadilla. Dungey went 1-1 to take his eighth overall win in a row, and temporary teammate Clement Desalle, who’s on break from the FIM Motocross World Championship series, went 2-2 for second overall for the day. Dungey and Desalle dominated the motos with their powerful and smooth Suzuki fuel-injected RM-Z450s, and Dungey added points to his already impressive lead in the series.

In the first moto, Ryan Dungey showed Unadilla he was ready to race and ready to win. Dungey took charge immediately by grabbing holeshot and never looking back. While new teammate Clement Desalle, who’s currently second in points in the MX1 GP series, took second off the start. Dungey led the race wire-to-wire and by the end of the moto, Ryan was nearly 13 seconds ahead of the rest. Desalle made an impressive showing by following Dungey to the finish line to take the second spot on the podium.

At the start of moto 2, Desalle took up the second spot again while Dungey followed in third. Desalle quickly hunted down the leader and passed him for the lead, while Dungey worked his way into second. While Desalle tried to stay at the front, Dungey had other plans and moved his way to the front of the pack. Dungey finished the race with a nearly 12-second lead, and Desalle finished in second.

Overall, the Rocktstar Makita Suzuki duo of Dungey and Desalle finished 1-2 for the day. Teammate Matt Moss finished 14th in the first moto but pulled off the track in the second moto after 13 laps, putting him in 32nd place. Moss finished 19th overall for the day.

Dungey Wins Seventh in a Row at Washougal

28 07 2010
  • Ryan Dungey won both motos at Washougal for his seventh overall victory in a row in the 2010 AMA Pro Motocross series.
  • Dungey is now 95 points ahead of second place in the race to the championship.
  • The Suzuki fuel-injected RM-Z450 gave Dungey all the power he needed to win both races.

BREA, CA – July 26, 2010 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey raced to his seventh overall win on Saturday at the Washougal MX track in Washington. Round 8 of the AMA Pro Motocross series hosted two 450 motos on Saturday and Dungey won both, raising his moto win tally to 12 and giving him his seventh victory in a row this season.

“Today was good, and I was able to make some key passes and get out front thanks to my Rockstar Makita Suzuki,” Dungey said. “The whole team worked together and made it work well today. I just want to keep the momentum going through the end of the season.”

Dungey continued his winning streak in moto 1 when he got a top-five start and methodically worked his way to the front of the pack by the end of the fourth lap. He has been so consistent in 2010 that he seems to effortlessly take over and maintain the lead. His RM-Z450 powered him over every obstacle at the picturesque Washington track and past any racers in front of him.

In the second moto, Dungey again made quick passes and moved his way to the front by lap 7. Again, he focused and put in lap after fast lap on his RM-Z450, taking the win and increasing his points lead to 95. His 1-1 moto victories are a continuation of the great 2010 season Dungey has built so far with his Rockstar Makita Suzuki team.

Matt Moss finished 14th in the second moto after an unfortunate first moto. He launched to an aggressive start in moto two, and ran with the leaders for several laps before falling back. Moss was 17th overall for the day.

The next race on the AMA Pro Motocross circuit takes place at Unadilla raceway in New Berlin, NY, on August 14th.

Dungey Returns to Form in Red Hot Texas

8 06 2010

BREA, CA – June 7, 2010 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Round 2 of the AMA Pro Motocross Championship, held in the blazing heat of Freestone Raceway in Wortham, Texas, took a considerable toll on the competition. While most riders and their machines struggled to make it through the day, Ryan Dungey and his Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450 simply dominated the field en route to a stunning 1-1 moto finish. Teammate Matt Moss, his wrist still sore from being landed on in Hangtown, gutted out a tough day, managing a 34-20 finish for 24th overall.

Anxious to improve on his Hangtown results, Dungey secured a good first moto start near the front. He then quickly made his way to the front, taking the lead on lap 7. As the heat and humidity intensified, however, Dungey and the Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450 held strong at the front, crossing the finish line well ahead of second place, taking his first moto win in the 450 class.

“We put in our work the last couple of weeks, actually, it goes all the way back to after the Vegas Supercross, really,” Dungey said after the race. “I admit we didn’t have a good race at Hangtown, but we kept after it as a team and pulled through in some pretty tough conditions in Texas. We know each other very well after 4-plus years together and you could say we drew on our experience to win this overall. This was a team win.”

The second moto saw considerably more treacherous conditions. The Freestone track had become much rougher and the 100-degree heat had yet to back off. For Dungey, however, it was just another race to win. Dungey started near the front and once again moved into the lead early on and never looked back. Dungey made it look easy aboard his Rockstar Makita Suzuki RM-Z450, stretching out another sizable lead on his way to his first 1-1 overall finish. For Moss, the second moto was an improvement, as he was able to finish 20th on the tough track with an injured wrist. His efforts were good enough for 24th overall.

“I had bad luck in the first race with a crash, but in the second moto I got a great start and my bike was working great,” Moss said. “I just struggled with the heat and my wrist, but I do feel like I’m getting better. Next weekend will be good. I have seen the track and it’s the sort of track that I like, so I can’t wait to get there and get a good result.”

“My bike was a big advantage today,” Dungey said from the top spot on the victory podium. “The power delivery is very controllable and on a rough track like this, it made it easier to be smooth and find good lines. My team really worked hard to get the setup right, and I can’t say enough about them and the bike.”

With the win, Dungey moves up to second place in the championship standings. The next stop of the series is June 12th at Mt. Morris, Pennsylvania, for the Rockstar Energy High Point National.
