Yamaha’s Release of the new “Mio J”

February 1, 2012 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. announces the release of the “Mio J” 115cc automatic transmission commuter model to be launched on the Indonesian market in early February 2012. This model achieves 30% greater fuel economy compared to the previous model and is the latest example of Yamaha Motor’s medium-term growth strategy(*1) to strengthen product competitiveness, appeal and profitability in the ASEAN motorcycle market.

The new Mio J mounts a newly designed 115cc engine with fuel injection provided by the YMJET-FI(*2) system that helps achieve class-leading levels of fuel economy and cost performance. In addition, the design motif has been renewed with an S-line running through the body with styling that brings compactness, storage capacity and comfort together into one package.

Indonesia’s motorcycle market scale is approximately eight million units a year (Yamaha Motor survey, 2011 results) and around 50% of these are automatic models with the Mio series playing an important role.

In 2003, Yamaha introduced the Mio as the first stylish automatic model into the Indonesian market, where models with manual transmissions had been the norm. The model won wide acclaim from all kinds of customers and started a big shift toward automatic models with a total of 4.7 million units sold.

The new Mio J was developed to provide even greater outstanding fuel economy and cost performance to customers in the “automatic commuter” market, especially in the urban centers of Indonesia’s growing economy.

The Mio J is manufactured and marketed by group company PT. Yamaha Indonesia Motor Manufacturing (YIMM).

*1 Medium-term management plan: One of the four growth strategies in Yamaha Motor’s 3-year (2010-2012) medium term management plan is strengthening product competitiveness, appeal and profitability in the ASEAN motorcycle market. This aims to be accomplished by enhancing product appeal by (1) increasing the ratio of models featuring a fuel injection system and (2) increasing profitability through reducing the cost of fuel injection systems and the benefits of larger scale production.

*2 YMJET-FI (Yamaha Mixture Jet-Fuel Injection): A fuel injection system employing an auxiliary air intake passage besides the main passage to provide an “air assist” for more efficient mixing of the air and fuel that helps improve fuel economy in the practical use range.
